Act 1 Scene 2 Pg. 42 Line 131-132

Hyperbole-“O that this too too solid flesh would melt, thaw and resolve into a dew.”

Hamlet is wishing that he could die. This shows that hamlet seems to feel that everyone is against him.

Act 1 Scene 2 Pg. 42 Line 153-154

Simile- “My father’s brother – but no more like my father than I to Hercules.”

Hamlet is comparing that his father is completely different than his Uncle. This also shows the little respect he has for his uncle.

Oxymoron- “goodly king”

This is meaning that the king does good things. Yet it contradicts itself in that the king does not do things for other people

Act 1 Scene 1 pg.22 Line 20

Oxymoron- “Honest Soldier”

This is meaning that Marcellus is trust worthy this is important because this is when they begin to see the ghost is coming forth

Oxymoron- “ But my uncle-father, aunt-mother.”

This is a most complicated situation and this fraise is completely showing opposites of confusion that Hamlet isn’t sure what he should call the king and queen.

Act 3 Scene 3pg.184 Line 43

Simile- “Though inclination be as sharp as will” Doing something is hard and having the will is harder. This helps Polonius from thinking he can take Hamlets rightful thrown without a fight.

Act 3 Scene 1 Pg.148 Line 161

Personification-“the glass of fashion and the mould of form, the observed of all servers,”

Everything that was meant to be is now ruined and this is when Ophelia is noticing that Hamlet is getting dangerous and crazy.

Act 3 Scene 1 pg. 146 Line 131-135

Paradox-“ I am myself indifferent honest, but I could accuse me of such things that it were better my mother not borne me. I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious, with more offences at my beck that I have thoughts to put them in.”

Hamlet is saying that his mother would feel shameful of him, yet he is proud of himself. This shows that Hamlet is still making sense and doesn’t seem to crazy yet

Act 3 Scene 1 pg. 146

Simile- “ We are like arrant knaves all, We are not trust worthy, you shouldn’t believe us. This shows that Hamlet is hurt that he’s giving back the stuff he’s given to her and is trying to protect his ego.

Act 2 Scene 2 Pg.136 Line 578-583

Hyperbole-“That guilty creatures sitting at a play, have, by the very cunning of the scene, been struck so to the soul that presently they have proclaimed their malefactions. For murder, though it have no tongue, will speak with most miraculous organ.”

This portrays that Hamlet feels that making a play about his fathers death will get to the king. This shows that Hamlet is hoping to make the king mad, so that he can believe truly he had killed his own brother. Not thinking that Claudius might think of it as a mockery.

Act 2 Scene 2 Pg.136 Line 587-589

Personification-“ The spirit that I have seen may be evil, and the devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape.”

He is saying that evil is like the devil and gives it power. Hamlet feels that evil is taking control of him and that he cannot help it. This shows that Hamlet doesn’t want to be responsible for his own actions.

Act 2 Scene 2 Pg.136 Line 573

Paradox-“Prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell,”

These are two different places yet they are compared to show how much Hamlet hates the king. It’s purpose is to show that Hamlet is wanting revenge, but wont take it yet.

Act 2 Scene 2

Paradox-“I am but mad north- north west. When the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a hand saw.”

It is using two directions of winds to show that he is really not mad. This shows that Hamlet is using his wits to baffle Guildenstern.

Act 1 Scene 5

Personification-“Haste me to know it, that with wings a swift as meditation or the thoughts of love may sweep to my revenge.”

He’s giving the ghost an image of having wings, and thinking the plan out. It shows that the ghost wants Hamlet to get revenge for his death.

Act 1 Scene 2 pg. 42

Hyperbole-“With such dexterity to incestuous sheets.”

This shows that Hamlet thinks everything is wrong. Yet it shows that Hamlet seem to be over exaggerate everything he says.
