1. Chad Sadowski (12/8/77)was the Phil's 23rd round draft choice in the 2000 amateur draft out of the University of Wisconsin. He has been on the disabled list (shoulder) since the first week of the season, throwing 2 innings in one game, and only two pitches in his second. He retired before the beginning of the 2003 season.(updated 2/26/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  2. Jeremy Salazar (3/18/76) was the Phillies' 19th round draft pick in the 1998 amateur draft. The backup catcher at Scranton, Salazar hit .152 through June 27 in 2001, and improved those number by hitting .175 through June 26 in 2002. A strong second half in 2001 salvaged his numbers for the year, but that second half was more a fluke than a harbinger, as neither his second half of 2002 (nor his entire 2003) matched his 2001 entry. He was released prior to the 2003 season. (updated 4/1/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  3. Brian Sanches (8/8/78) was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 2nd round 1999 amateur draft out of Lamar University. 4. Emilio Sanchez was signed as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic. In the Dominican Summer League, he led the league with 25 saves, and in 32 innings turned in an ERA under 2.00. He pitched three games in the GCL early in the season, and then did not reappear. He did not pitch poorly enough to get cut, there is no record of a demotion to the Dominican League. I am assuming he was injured, but since the GCL rosters are so large, they just left him on. Whatever it was, he was "Reinstated from Suspension" of January 17, 2003, and pitched with Lakewood in 2003. (updated 4/1/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  5. Julio Santana (1/20/74) was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 1990 by the Rangers. He has pitched at the major league level for a number of teams since then, and had his most successful year in 2002 for the Tigers in the Detroit bullpen. 8. Jose Santiago (11/5/74) is basically a spare part with potential. 2001 was his best year, throwing out a league average ERA over 91.7 major league innings between Kansas City and Philadelphia. His ERA ballooned over 7.00 in 2002, however, and he was recently demoted, easily clearing waivers, so that the born-again winner Joe Roa could get a chance to reproduce his Scanton magic in the majors. He opted for free agency after the 2002 season, rather than accept an assignment to Scranton, and was since signed by Cleveland for 2003. (updated 1/23/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  10. G. G. Sato (8/9/78), signed out of Japan in 2000, was listed as a Baseball America Top 30 prospect, and is ostensibly a catcher. He tore the labrum in his throwing shoulder during spring training, however, and cannot throw. Thus limiting his value as a catcher. Rather than lose a full season on the DL, Sato, who spent last season in Batavia, is split this year between Batavia and GCL on a permanent rehab stint as the designated hitter. While doing a best not to backslide, Sato put up comparable numbers in his limited role after a slow start. He was released following the 2003 season.
