1. Jorge Padilla (8/11/79), was one of the Phillies few power prospects. Taken in the third round of the 1998 amateur draft, Padilla has climbed to Reading at the age of 22, and while his batting average has held steady, his home run totals have been slashed at Reading. A hand injury seriously curtailed his season, and only a quick start in 2004 will revive his chances as a major leaguer. (updated 12/5/2003) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  2. Matt Padilla (8/30/81) was the Phil's 31st round pick in the 2003 amateur draft out of America River Community College in Florida. His low ERA belies the fact that over half of his runs were unearned. When you're allowing that many hits and walks, chances are that when there's an error someone will score. 3. Vicente Padilla (9/27/77) was part of a large package of players (including Travis Lee, Omar Daal, and Nelson Figueroa) to come to the Phillies in exchange of Curt Schilling. Padilla is the only one of the foursome left, but based on his 2002 and 2003 performance following a successful 2001 AAA makeover into a starter, he may be worth it by himself. 4. Joshua Paddock (10/15/80) was the Phillies' 35th round draft pick in the 2002 amateur draft out of Aurora University. Six games in the GCL was enough to earn a promotion to Batavia, where his ERA was low enough in limited middle relief work, but his RA was much higher. He was bumped in Clearwater in 2003, where he performed poorly from the bullpen, and will likely either repeat or be cut. (updated 2/18/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  5. Kyle Parcus (10/7/81) was the Phillies' 12 round draft pick in the 2003 amateur draft out of Texas A & M. His few numbers in pro ball so far have been unimpressive, but look for him in Lakewood in 2004 based on pedigree. (updated 2/18/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  6. Brad Pautz (1/3/77) was the Phillies 4th round pick in the 1999 amateur draft out of the University of Minnesota. He has shown steady progress each year, but his "demotion" to the bullpen in 2001 in Clearwater dropped his prospect standing, as did his futher "demotion" in Reading this year from closer to middle relief. His numbers are solid, though, if not earth-shattering, and he does strike out far more than he walks (but doesn't strike out too terribly many). His hits spiked in 2003 was released after the 2003 season. (updated 2/20/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  8. Josue Perez (8/12/77) was signed as a free agent out of Cuba in 1998 by the Dodgers, and then by the Phillies in 1999 for $850,000 when his contract with the Dodgers was voided. The hype and early returns gave him the "prospect" label. The price tag is why he continues to clog up benches in the minors, in an attempt to get a return on investment, even though he failed to break the Mendoza line in 2001 and was only marginally better in 2002. By 2003, he seemed to have finally mastered AA. (updated 12/3/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  10. Rod Perry (2/1/79) was the Phillies'12th round pick in the 2001 amateur draft out of USC. He had a rough 2002, treading water below .250, and in 2003 he dropped completely off of the radar. 20. Nick Punto (11/8/77) emerged from the obscurity of the 21st round of the 1998 draft to become a legitimate prospect, garnering an invite to the 2000 Arizona Fall League. He's only 23, and last year tied the Scranton record for stolen bases, but he is a constant injury risk, hitting the DL at least once each of the last four years. He has a good eye, but could stand to improve his hit totals to get his OBP closer to .400. In 2003, he got his first real shot in Philadelphia, but did not inspire.
