  2. Chad Oliva (8/27/80) was drafted by the Phillies in the 18th round of the 2002 amateur draft out of Jacksonville University. Given an unexpected promotion, Oliva did not disappoint, putting up solid numbers at Lakewood. He is not related to Tony Oliva, nor does he pronounce it the same way (Ah-lee-vuh, sort of like "Oliver" with a Boston accent). He was among the better players in Lakewood early in 2003, was striking out in nearly half of his at bats. He retired in May.(updated 2/22/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  3. Mark Outlaw (1/2/77) was drafted by the Phillies in the 15th round of the 1999 amateur draft. Complete domination in Batavia in 1999 and Piedont (SAL) in 2000 earned him a jump to Reading in 2001, where he struggled out of the pen, and for the first time began striking out fewer than one batter per inning. The team obviously though enough of him to send him to the Arizona Fall League in 2001, though, where he continued to struggle. A second go-round in Reading did not help, and although his ERA was down a little, his strikeout numbers did recover. At 25, Outlaw tried a third tour of the Eastern league, but was released after a lackluster 12 games, in which he let up a hit and a walk per inning. He turned up in a minor Independent Leagues later in the year, where he did not fare much better. (updated 2/22/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Pablo Ozuna (8/25/74) was a hot prospect with the Cardinals and later the Marlins, when he was signed out of the Dominican Republic, but after aging four years in the offseason became just minor league fodder for the Rockies. Signed by the Tigers before 2004, he was traded to the Phillies for cash.(updated 4/7/2004) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)
