Jean Machi (2/1/83) was signed as a free agent in Venezuela, and was brought over into the GCL for the 2002 season. Reportedly clocked at 98 MPH in Venezuela, Machi started out in America with more walks than strikeouts, only turning his numbers around in his last few appearances of the year. He continued to put up mediocre numbers in Batavia in 2003. Machi can turn in to a definite prospect, but until he harnesses his fastball consistently, Machi will remain just one to watch. Garry Maddox (10/24/74) was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Diamondbacks in 1996. Since then, he has played with several other organizations, and in 2002 split his time amongst three Atlantic League teams (Atlantic City Surf, Camden Riversharks, and the All-Road Schedule (no home park) Pennsylvania Road Warriors). He hit a combined .285 among the three teams. (updated 2/1/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Ryan Madson (8/28/80)was drafted in the 9th round of the Phillies' 1998 amateur draft. Before his 22nd birthday, he had already established himself as the ace of the Reading Phillies' staff, his 3.20 ERA easily besting his numbers at Clearwater, and proving that his performance in the Sally League in 2000 was not a fluke. He made his major league debut in Philadelphia in 2003, but looks to begin 2004 in Scranton, awaiting the first injury to return. (updated 2/24/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Wendell Magee (8/3/72) was a light-hitting centerfielders for the Phillies for several years before spending the last three years with the Tigers. He was traded from the Indians to the Phillies on March 25, 2003 for a PTBNL. His contract permitted him to become a free agent if he wasn't on the ML roster by May 1, and that's exactly what happened.(updated 2/24/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Ben Margalski (9/2/79) was the Phillies' lucky 13th round draft pick in the 2002 amateur draft out of Southwest Missouri State University. Although hitting .424 over a two week stretch in late August of 2001 highlighted his potential, it only put in stark relief how attrocious the rest of his short-season was at Batavia, as he finished with a .223 batting average. Apparently found deserving of a place on a full-season team, Margalski turned in a .211 performance at Lakewood so far. Another example how catching is the Phillies' weakest link in the low minors. Margalski was outrighted to the Columbus Redstixx (Cleveland) soon after the 2002 season. (updated 3/27/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Andre Marshall (10/2/80) was the Phillies' 13th round pick in the 2001 amateur draft out of University of Washington. While it is generally not a good thing for a college draft pick to be demoted to short-season in his second pro season, it is generally a much worse thing when your performance in short-season after the demotion is actually worse than your already bad performance in full-season. A further regression in 2003 marked the end of the line. (updated 8/8/02) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Scott Mathieson (2/27/84) was the Phillies' 17th round pick in the 2002 amateur draft out of Alderman Community High School. Rough and raw in a few outings, his K's were up and BB's were down, but when he got hit they hit him hard (.421 in non-K at bats). 2003 showed the same pattern, but he should get a third shot as a 20 year old. Sam McConnell(12/31/75) was signed as a minor league free agent out of the Pirates' system, where he threw the last two years at AAA Nashville with an ERA over 6.00 both years. He had a sub-2.00 ERA in the first half of 2000 with Altoona, but otherwise has had mixed success at the AA level. Two poor outing by Ken Pumphrey as Scranton's fifth starter, however, earned McConnell a late season promotion on July 29 to try his hand at Scranton. He signed after the 2003 season with the Braves. Troy NcNaughton (1/27/75) is was the best hitter in Clearwater in 2002. He is also 27, which makes him 2 years older than anyone on the team except journeyman Juan Sosa. It was great that he is there, since he was not blocking any prospects, and without the C-Phils would have a much better chance of breaking the record for worst season ever. Bizarrely, he was promoted to Reading, which he clearly deserved, but where he was not needed nearly as much (considering that he hit .235 in New Haven last year). Perhaps it was just too confusing having two Troys on the same team. At Reading, he lived down to expectations, proving yet again that McNaughton found his ceiling at single-A. A free agent in the offseason, McNaughton was not re-signed. (updated 12/24/02) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Aaron McNeal (4/28/78) was first signed by the New York Mets in 1996, and had a breakout AA season for Binghamton in 2002, hitting .299 with an .881 OPS as their regular first baseman. This was a huge jump from his .201 the first time through the Eastern League. He failed to break the Mendoza line in 25 games at AAA, though, and became a 6 year minor league free agent in the off-season. (updated 12/4/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Mark McRoberts (1/15/82), was the Phillies' 14th round pick in the 2000 amateur draft. He was that rarity in the Phil's minors - a catcher who can hit. In fact, Mark generally DH’ed on days he's not catching. Finally pushed to full season ball in 2003, however, he struggled, keeping up his home runs, as well as a few walks, but striking out in over a third of his at bats. Further, the conversion to outfielder lost whatever residual offensive value he had. Although still showing promise, he was left unprotected and he was taken in the minor league portion of the 2003 Rule 5 draft by San Diego. (updated 10/7/02) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Victor Menocal (8/7/79) was drafted by the Phillies in the 15th round of the 2002 amateur draft out of Georgia Tech. Listed as a shortstop when initially drafted (he was name the all-tournament shortstop of the 2002 college world series), Menocal has been used almost exclusively as a relief pitcher, where he has so far struggled. He was originally drafted in the 6th round by Atlanta in 1998 out of high school.(updated 7/28/02) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Hector Mercado (4/29/74), was acquired before the 2001season from Cincinnati for Reggie Taylor. He started 2002 in the Phillies bullpen where he exploded for an 11.00+ ERA. Demoted to Scranton, he faired much better and spent the rest of the year getting occasional chances to work his major league ERA down to a reasonable number. He bounced between leagues in 2003. A free agent at the end of the season, he was not re-signed. (updated 2/25/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)
Josh Miller (2/7/79) was drafted by the Phillies in the 32nd round of the 2001 amateur draft. He is a control pitcher who is thriving in the minor by giving up many fewer walks as he has struck out. Unfortunately, he isn't striking out nearly enough hitters, and pitchers with this profile tend to fade quickly as they climb the ladder and the quality of the hitters improves faster than they do. This appears to be what happened in 2003. (updated 9/23/02) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Kevin Millwood (12/24/74) was a top pitcher for the Atlanta Braves. He was traded to the Phillies for AAA catcher Johnny Estrada in December of 2002 when Greg Maddux accepted arbitration with the Braves. He had a good, but not stellar, year in 2003, capped by the only no-hitter of the year. He accepted arbitration and will be back in 2004. (updated 2/24/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Zachery Minor (8/4/79)was the Phillies' 25th round pick in the 2002 amateur draft out of Fresno State University. He appears to have peaked at short season ball, and is unlikely for 2004. (updated 2/24/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Timi Moni-erigbali (6/11/82) was signed as a free agent in 2002, apparently because the GCL team had promoted most of its outfielders, and team hadn't signed enough of its high school picks to make a team that met the age restrictions of rookie ball. Originally a 42nd round pick by the Dodgers in 2000 out of Columbus (GA) high school, Moni never appeared in a game for the Dodgers organization. He has begun his Phillies career 0 for 8 with 8 strikeouts, on his way to an .098 batting average (4 singles) with an K/AB rate of above 60% and a K/BB rate of 25 to 1! Has a worse performance ever been turned in by a Phillies farm hand? If not, the records have been burned. Back in 2003, his numbers improved (how could they not?) and he is reputed to be a speedster. (updated 2/25/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)
Tim Moss (1/26/82) was the Phil's 3rd round pick in the 2003 amateur draft out of the University of Texas -- the Phil's first pick that year. He has so far shown nothing. (updated 2/25/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Brett Myers (8/17/80) was the Phil's first round pick in the 1999 amateur draft (12th overall) and was the Phillies' top pitching prospect entering 2002. Promoted to Philadelphia in mid-July, 2002, Myers was sparkling in his first start, and stunningly bad in his second. 2003 solidified his spot on the roster, and is the clear #5 going into the season.(updated 2/25/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)
