PLAYER NOTES AND STATS, L
  1. Jarrod Lawson (4/2/79) was the Phillies' 7th round draft pick out of Potosi High School (Missouri) in the 1998 amateur draft. Highly touted back in the day, Lawson has since been oft-injured and missed the entire 2002 season. He came back briefly in 2003 (11 walks in 5 innings in the GCL!), but was released after the season (updated 3/8/2004). (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  2. Ricky Ledee (11/22/73) was a highly touted Yankees prospect who has been deemed a bust. He will not give you a high batting average, but walks enough and has enough power when he does make contact that he can certainly help a team as a fourth outfielder. 3. Seung Lee (6/2/79)was one of two highly touted Korean free agent signings (along with Il Yop Kim) in 2001. Three months later, Lee was under the knife having back surgery, and spent the rest of the year rehabbing. Back at full strength for 2002, Lee is doing better than Kim, despite his poor showing in the Arizona Fall League, where he was completely overmatched. Kim has since been cut, but Lee remains a B-level prospect, especially if he can cut down on the homers. (updated 3/10/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  4. Travis Lee (5/26/75) was a player with a lot of "tools", but never quite pulled it together to reach the level of a league average first baseman. He was acquired by Philadelphia is 2000 as part of the Curt Schilling trade, and it was a solid acquisition at the time. By 2002, it was clear that it was no longer worthwhile to wait for the "breakout season," which made it reasonable to trade for Jeremy Giambi (what was unreasonable was not actually playing Giambi once he was signed.) Giambi was since traded, but the signing of Jim Thome put the final nail in Lee's coffin, and he was non-tendered after the 2002 season. He was signed to a one year contract to play for Tampa Bay in 2003, and then by the Yankees for 2004. (updated 3/10/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  5. Carlos Leon (8/31/79) was originally signed as a free agent out of Venezuela by the Boston Red Sox in 1997. He signed with the Phillies as a six year minor league free agent after hitting over .300 for the Portland Sea Dogs in 2003. (updated 12/26/02) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  6. Jesse Levis (4/14/68) was signed as a free agent in December 2002. He has appeared in at least one major league game in 9 of the past 11 years (career BA .255 in 654 at major league at bats), but spent most of 2001 playing for the Louisville Bats (AAA - Reds), where he hit .283 with a .739 OPS. He spent all of 2003 in Scranton, and signed as a free agent with the Mets for 2004. (updated 12/26/02) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  8. Mike Lieberthal (1/18/72)has come into his own as the second best catcher in the National League (after Mike Piazza). With Piazza moving the first base, Lieberthal just might be #1. Here’s hoping he can hold on, because there is no likely successor waiting in the wings. Lieberthal was the Phil's first round draft pick (3rd overall) in the 1990 amateur draft. 10. Mauber Lopez (6/30/81) was signed as a free agent out of Venezuela for the 2000 season. Three seasons in the Venezuelan Summer League earned him a promotion to the GCL, where he performed well for a catcher, although he was about 2 or 3 years too old for his league.
