1. Cole Hamels (12/27/83) was the Phil’s first round selection in the 2002 amateur draft out of Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego. He signed too late to play at all in 2002, but performed very well in 2003, earning an NRI to spring training 2004, where he also played well. Look for a full season in Clearwater, with a chance for a callup to Reading in 2004. (updated 3/15/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  2. Jimmy Hamilton (8/1/75) was selected by the Phillies in the minor league portion of the 2001 Rule 5 Draft from the Baltimore Orioles. He was originally drafted in the the 7th round of the 1996 amateur draft out of Ferrum (VA) College, but was traded to the Orioles in 1999 as the PTBNL for Harold Baines. He has spent portions of the last three seasons turning in generally subpar results in AAA. A minor league free agent, he signed a minor league contract with the Pirates (AA Altoona) for the 2003 season. (updated 1/30/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  4. Buzz Hannahan (6/29/76) was drafted by the Phil's in the 31st round of the 1998 amateur draft. He spent most of 2002 serving as the "righty" half of a second base platoon with Brian Hitchcox, and put up the weaker numbers of the two. He moved to a super-utility role in 2003. His biggest strength is likely his baserunning. (updated 12/4/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  5. Brian Hansen (L) (5/8/83) was the Phillies' 6th round pick in the 2001 amateur draft out of Longwood (NY) High School. Repeating the GCL at age 19, his extra-base hits skyrocketed, however, which bodes well for future power numbers. He failed to progress significantly in 2001, but he is young enough to benefit from another trip around the South Atlantic League. (updated 8/26/02) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  7. Ian Harvey (10/11/76) was signed by the Phillies after being released by the Padres organization in May, 2003. Before that, he had played for the Red Sox minor league team, and spent several years with the London (Ontario) Frontier League affiliate (he is from Ontario), an Independent League that specializes in signing young players. 8. Jack Headley (12/19/79) was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Santa Clara University following the 2003 amateur draft. Preseason, 2004, Clearwater manager Mike Schmidt called Headley "as good a hitter as Mike Lieberthal," but the rookie manager's viewpoint was not the dominant one. 9. Anthony Hensley (12/10/77) was the Phillies' 20th round pick in the 2000 amateur draft. The outfielder is definitely a speedster, but unfortunately you can't steal first base. 10. Michel Hernandez (8/12/78) was signed as a free agent out of Venezuela by the New York Yankees. He worked his way up the ladder, eventually getting into 5 games for the Yankees in 2003. 11. Roberto Hernandez (11/11/64) was originally drafted by the California Angels in the first round of the 1986 amateur draft. He didn't make the majors until 1991 at age 26, but has nonetheless put together a solid career as a reliever. He was signed by the Phillies as a free agent before the 2004 season. 12. Yoel Hernandez (4/15/80) was signed as a free agent out of Venezuela in 1999. Last year, he pitched well at Lakewood, despite a 6-9 record. But in 2002, Hernandez truly earned the "hard luck" label, going 3-13 though mid-July despite an ERA under 4.00. He gained 2 extra years before the 2003 season, but is still a viable “B-Prospect”. 13. Cary Hiles (11/29/75) was the Phillies' 23 round pick in the 1998 amateur draft out of the University of Memphis. He had essentially carved out a nitch for himself as a "situational righty", rarely going more than one inning per relief appearance, and climbed all the way up to Scranton this year, positioning himself at 26 for a potential cup of coffee. Alas, it was not to be. His 3 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio in Reading in 2001 degraded to almost 1 to 1, which earned him a seat on a mid-June bus back to Reading, where his numbers were worse than last years'. He nonetheless earned as AFL invitation, where his numbers were considerably better than his numbers at either Phillies affiliate. Not protected on the 40 man roster and considered by some a Rule 5 risk (he was not taken), Hiles got another shot at Scranton in 2003. (updated 3/10/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  14. A. J. Hinch (5/15/74) was first drafted by the Oakland A's in the 3rd Round of the 1996 amateur draft out of Stanford. An extreme AAAA player, he has performed incredibly well in the Pacific Coast League, hitting .376 in Edmonton in 1997, .377 in Vancouver in 1999, and .321 in Omaha in 2001. But every time he got promoted to the majors, he failed to carry any of the hitting skills over, putting up only a .220 average combined in his over 900 at bats. Let's hope he's not needed in Philadelphia at all this year. (updated 4/2/2004)(Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  15. Brian Hitchcox (7/21/78) was the Phil's 25th round pick in the 1999 amateur draft. Not considered a prospect by the Phillies, Brian turned in only a .195 performance in Clearwater in 2001 -- not good for a contact hitter. 2002 didn't look any more promising with a late April demotion from Reading back to Clearwater. A month is Florida was good for him, though, and Brian had a much stronger second half in Reading, leading to an Arizona Fall League invite. 2003 was a return to form.(updated 12/3/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  17. Dave Hollins (5/25/66) was innocently working in the science lab one day when he was bitten by a radioactive spider, giving him superhuman . . . No wait, wrong story. After inexplicably being signed before the 2002 season, Dave Hollins spent most of season on a rehab stint in Scranton where he didn't play much -- and didn't hit when he did play -- following a bizarre reaction to a spider bite that was aggravated by his diabetes. I guess having him unavailable in the minors does less harm than being unavailable in Philadelphia. He was, bizarrely, re-signed to a minor league contract for the 2003 season (even though he was not be able to play in the majors until May, since he was not offered arbitration.) Hollins decided to retire in mid-2003. Just remember, Dave, with great salaries come great responsibility. (updated 2/17/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  21. Ryan Howard (11/19/79) was the Phil's 5th round pick in the 2001 amateur draft out of Southwest Missouri State. Picked for his power potential, Howard led Lakewood with 19 homers, and is hitting a solid .280. While definitly a hitting prospect in the Phillies' offense-weak system, I agree with John Sickels' analysis made before the 2003 season, so I will just quote him: "I'm not convinced that he will thrive at the highest levels, however. First, he fanned 145 times while drawing just 55 unintentional walks this year. I try not to worry too much about strikeouts, but that's a lot of whiffs for a college-trained player in the Sally League. Howard tends to chase and miss high fastballs. He turns 23 on Nov. 19, so he was not young for his level, either. I want to see how he manages the strike zone at higher levels before going overboard with a strong recommendation. There is power here, plus athleticism and decent defense, but it is too early to call him a top prospect."(updated 3/10/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)
