1. Geoff Geary (8/26/76) was drafted by the Phillies in the 15th round of the 1998 amateur draft. He spent 2001 shuttling between Reading and Scranton, but seems to have settled in at AAA, averaging about a strikeout per inning, and about a walk every four innings. Now, he is just shuttling between starting and the bullpen. Geary provides good depth and could be a solid spot call-up in case of injury, or to start the second game of a major league double header, but I would not be surprised if 2003 turns out to be a career year for Geoff. 2. Jeremy Giambi (9/30/74) was acquired early in the 2002 season from the A's in exchange for John Mabry. What appeared to be a one-sided deal at the time turned out to be one -- from the other direction. Mabry proved to be a spark driving the A's into the postseason, while Giambi rotted on the Philadelpia bench behind Travis Lee, who bizarrely remained the starter. Giambi was traded to Boston in exchange for minor league pitcher Josh Hancock. (updated 1/23/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  3. Kevin Gibbs (4/3/74) was originally signed by the Dodgers in the 6th round of the 1995 amateur draft. After missing most of 2000 and all of 2001 on the DL, he played with the Yankees in Norwich (AA) in 2002 and the Camden Riversharks of the Independent Atlantic League in 2003.(updated 4/7/2004) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  4. Dan Giese (5/19/77) was acquired by the Phillies from San Diego for a PTBNL in May, 2003 and assigned to Reading. Giese was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 34th round of the 1999 amateur draft and traded to San Diego in mid-2002. He excelled at both Reading and Scranton. 6. Alejandro Giron (4/21/79) was signed by the Phillies as an free agent out of Puerto Rico in 1995. He was released early in the season, but -- unlike some others -- it probably wasn't because of his age discrepancy (his papers had him listed five DAYS younger than his actual age). He turned up in the Atlantic League playing for the Pennsylvania Road Warriors. (updated 1/31/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  7. Doug Glanville (8/25/70) is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, but was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1991 (1st round, 12th overall) before being traded to the Phillies before the 1998 season in exchange for Mickey Morandini. He turned an amazing few months in 1999 into a full career, playing center for the Phillies through 2002. He decline arbitration and signed a one-year contract with the Rangers for 2003. After a trade to the Cubs, he was re-signed with the Phillies for 2004, and inexplicably made the club instead of Chase Utley. (updated 4/8/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  9. Willie Glen (10/30/77) was originally signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as an undrafted free agent in 2001. He struck out a fair number, but gave up too many walks and was released after an 8-5 season at Dunedin, before signing up with the Phillies for 2003. He performed well in Clearwater, but struggled at Reading. (updated 3/16/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  10. Wayne Gomes (1/15/1973) was drafted by the Phillies in the first round of the 1993 amateur draft out of Old Dominion University. He worked his way up through the system and worked as a replacement level reliever from 1997 through 2001, when he was traded to the Giants in a blockbuster deal for Felipe Crespo. After a few years of bouncing around, he was back with Scranton in 2003, but no longer anyone's prospect. He signed with Oakland for 2004. (updated 3/16/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  12. Dan Gonzalez (11/20/81) was the Phillies' 4th round pick in the 2000 amateur draft out of the Florida Air Academy. Solid numbers for a young shortstop, Gonzalez improved his base running in 2003 by letting up on his stolen base attempts. Gonzalez is the top shortstop prospect in the organization. 14. Tim Gradoville (R) (1/30/80) was the Phillies' 37th round draft pick in the 2002 amateur draft out of Creighton University. 16. Lee Gwaltney (5/6/80) was drafted by the Phillies in the 6th round of the 2002 amateur draft out of Louisiana Tech. Very high on the "prospect-meter" (good fastball, sinker, supposed to be a fast mover through the system), Gwaltney got only a little minor league experience in 2002, as he was shut down for the first part of August. He missed part of early 2003 with a minor arm injury, but came back strong enough to earn a promotion to Clearwater. (updated 3/16/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)
