Frequently Asked Questions

The following frequently asked questions are from various sources, such as the GameFAQs message boards and questions sent to me my e-mail.

  • Hardware FAQs

My GameCube system won't work. The system won't read discs, or displays an error message during gameplay. What should I do?

Look at your games to see if they have severe amounts of dust or fingerprints. If they do, dampen a cloth with water and clean the disc. If the disc appears to be clean and free of severe scratches, your systems lens might be dirty/worn out. Unfortunately, there aren't many lens cleaners that work with the GameCube. So you'll either have to send your system to Nintendo (your system might be replaced, rather than repaired), buy another GameCube, or buy another lens. A laser lens can be found on eBay for cheap, but you'll need to be willing to open your GameCube to replace it's original lens.

Do I need to import a Japanese or PAL GameCube to play import games?

No. With a Freeloader or an Action Replay, any GameCube system is able to play games from any region. Freeloader is also the only way to play import games without modifying the system.

Is the removal of the Digital port the only difference with the newer (DOL-101) model of the GameCube?

No. The DOL-101 models of the GameCube actually have several other differences, but they aren't really noticeable unless you look around. See the GameCube model comparison page for more info.

How good is the Component cables picture quality?

Imagine the picture quality of the Composite cables, but with a sharp picture and bright, vibrant colors. That's basically what the Component cable is like. The cable also allows for 480p Progressive Scan.

Is the Component cable worth buying?

If you have an original DOL-001 GameCube with a Digital port, an HDTV, and are able to find the cables for a reasonable price, then yes it is worth buying. Alternatively you can use an EON GCHD MK-II HDMI Adapter, which is useful if you're using a newer TV that doesn't have Component inputs.
