About Kerala: My State

God's Own Country

The basic culture of Kerala may be Dravidian in orgin , but the reality is a delightful mosaic of differing cultural streams. This process is a evident in the native language, Malayalam.Though of Dravidian orgin , it gradually began to change under the influence of Sanskrit , the court language of Aryans.A kind of cross fertilisation led to a fusion of traits of the two streams of culture -Aryan and Dravidian .later on the religous influence of Hinduism ,Buddhism , Islam and Christianity contributed to embellish the cultural riches of Kerala .St. Thomas the apostle of Christ landed in Kerala in 52 A.D. Islam's initial influences can be seen in India's earliest mosque near Cranganore (Kodungallur). This place was once home to the Jews who went on to establish a colony and a synagogue at Cochin.

Much of this variety of cultural influences can be traced to Kerala's long -standing contacts with the rest of the world. These precede the Christian era ,according to historians.Major trading centres along the kerala coast -like Cranganore , Quilon (Kollam) ,Cochin (Kochi) ,Calicut ( kozhikode ) -have been written about by travellers and traders of yore .Kerala was known to Egypt ,Asian minor, the Assyrian and Babylonian empires ,the Greeks, the Romans and the Chinese .Ships from the Malaya Peninsula ,the Philippines , Java , and Sumatra as well as Arabia used to call on the ports of Kerala.

These old and once strong links have made Malayalees worldywise, if not truely cosmopolitan and tolerant ,says Kerala lovers. The malyalee's love affair with the world continues -go to any country and you 're certain to find a Malayalee.Parts of the 'Gulf ' or the Middle East look, sound and smell like Kerala. All this has led to cultural concoction that expresses itself in various forms in various areas of the state..

Modern Kerala is a state of the Democratic Republic of India. Kerala as a united state was consolidated from the princely states of Travancore , Cochin , and Malabar with Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram ) as captial on Nov 1st 1954 after the independence of India from British on Aug 15th 1947.
