Jack Russell
Terriers
The American Irish
Crossing
Jack Russell Terriers (JRT’s) are energetic,
intelligent, and make good working dogs and companions. Don’t be fooled by
their small size. They can be well
behaved or they can be little
terrors. Much of your
JRT’s attitude and behavior depends on your consistency in training and the
atmosphere of your home. If I can
say anything about the JRT’s
that I have owned, it is
this, they will stand up to
whatever you put before them. Consistency
is the single most important part of their early development.
They are also very sensitive, and don’t usually need any heavy handed
discipline, usually a firm
no and immediate removal from the scene is enough.
If you find the need to use more firm measures, a rolled up piece of
paper usually does the trick, with a firm no.
They are easily trained.
As with all dog
breeds there are many different personality types.
JRT’s are more apt to go after other dogs and make noise about it.
This can be dangerous to them, because they don’t realize that they are
so small. This is why it is
important to keep them leashed at all times when out in public.
JRT’s love to play ball, chase squirrels, etc. Make sure that they get plenty
of exercise. If you have a backyard, make sure they get out to run off
their energy several times a day. They
love to play with children, but make sure that they are not being teased or
tortured, because they can be defensive and will protect themselves.
