Towards justice and human rights in Malaysia. Aliran Kesedaran Negara (ALIRAN), established in 1977, is Malaysia's first multi-ethnic reform movement and the nation's oldest human rights group.

 

Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) is a non-governmental Malaysian human rights organisation working for a free, equal, just and sustainable society. Through fighting for civil liberties that are enshrined in the Malaysian Human Rights Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to enable peoples' participation and the fruition of a civil society in Malaysia.

 

HAKAM or the National Human Rights Society defends and promotes human rights in Malaysia.

 

 

 

Dayausaha untuk menubuhkan sebuah badan hak asasi manusia di peringkat kebangsaan bermula dengan penglibatan cergas Malaysia di dalam Pertubuhan Bangsa-bangsa Bersatu bagi Hak Asasi Manusia (UNCHR) pada tahun 1993-1995 bilamana Malaysia telah terpilih sebagai ahli Suruhanjaya oleh Majlis Ekonomi dan Sosial Bangsa-bangsa Bersatu (ECOSOC). Malaysia telah diberi penghormatan apabila ketua perwakilannya, Tan Sri Dato' Musa Bin Hitam dilantik sebagai Pengerusi bagi sessi ke-52 UNCHR. Malaysia telah terpilih untuk berkhidmat bagi penggal kedua di UNCHR dari 1996-1998 dan akan meneruskan perkhidmatannya bagi penggal ketiga dari 2001 sehingga 2003.

 

As part of our public policy pre election assessment of the attitudes of Members of Parliament of all political persuasions, the Society has sent the attached questionnaire to Members of the last Parliament. We are pleased to say that some replies are beginning to trickle in. Transparency International Malaysia considers this an important survey given the Prime Minister’s emphasis on the qualities expected of candidates in the forthcoming elections.

(Consumer Issues)

The Federation Of Malaysian Consumers Associations or in short FOMCA, is a voluntary, non-profit, non-political and civic organisation. FOMCA links the activities of consumers' assocoations in Malaysia and works closely with government and non-governmental organisations in consumers information, education and protection activities both at national and international levels. Its main concern is not only value for money but more so value for people. FOMCA aspires to promote through the purchasing power of consumers, a "need-oriented" development that will ensure socio-economic and environmental justice for better quality of life for all. FOMCA was inaugurated on the 10th June 1973 in Alor Setar, Kedah.

 

ERA CONSUMER MALAYSIA acts as research, education and advocacy
group. It builds linkages and works in partnership with community based
organizations and grass root communities to strengthen their capacity and empower them to participate through initiatives in socio-economic, accountable governance, sustainable agriculture and ecological endeavors.

(Women)

AWAM is the All Women's Action Society. We are a voluntary, progressive, non-government organisation dedicated to raising awareness and voicing concerns affecting women, in particular the issue of violence against women.

 

The Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) is an independent, non-religious, non-governmental organisation based in Malaysia, committed to confronting violence against women. WAO was established in 1982 when it opened Malaysia's first Women's Refuge, providing shelter, counseling and child support to battered women. WAO is also involved in public education to create awareness of Violence Against Women and women's rights, and does advocacy on legal reform, in particular, policies and laws that discriminate against women.

 

Women's Centre for Change (WCC), Penang (Pusat Kesedaran Wanita) or formerly known as Women's Crisis Centre, Penang (Pusat Krisis Wanita). A voluntary, non-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing women's status in society and supporting women and children in crisis.

 

Our mission is to promote an awreness of the true principles of Islam, principles that enshrine the concept of equality between women and men, and to strive towards creating a society that upholds the Islamic principles of equality, justice, freedom and dignity within a democratic state.

 

The long-term goal of IWRAW Asia Pacific is to work towards the effective implementation of international human rights norms in relation to women's rights. This involves women actively claiming their rights as guaranteed by international treaties and national constitutions. Facilitating the mobilisation, advocacy, and participation of women at all levels, national to international, for effective monitoring of the CEDAW Convention, is thus an essential pre-condition.
