Gypsy News - 2000

10th September 2000
Gypsy Reunion

Down Memory Lane

It was in aid of the Family Life Services - a local charity and the show, hosted by Brian Richmond and Larry Lai featured other local acts too.

Gypsy performed with the following line-up:- Dixie, Don, Joe and Mel and with a special appearance from Joe J. (Dixie's Son) Lead Guitarist and founder of Suicide Solution.

They opened the show with Love Me, the Collin Raye hit and then followed that with their popular original Lonely Angel.

The group then picked up the tempo with a rousing rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama.

What followed was immediately recognised by the audience who roared out their approval as the opening notes of Hotel California echoed across the hall.

All too soon the band came to their last song for the night and it was only expected that they would go out with the thunder associated with Gypsy. Smoke On The Water was on everyone's lips as Dixie churned out rock's most famous riff.

It was a truly memorable performance considering that the band has not played together for almost a decade.

Whilst, Dixie, Don, Joe and Mel put up their usual impeccable performances, special mention must go to Joe J. who proved that he could hold his own that night when he played the solo for Smoke On The Water note for note.

With that show behind us, all we can hope for is the possibility that Gypsy will get together again on a more frequent basis if only to benefit those less fortunate than us.

What is really great is that when Gypsy plays for charity, everyone benefits. Let's hope it won't be too long before we see another show.

Gypsy News - 2003

14th June 2003
Gypsy Reunion

The Friendship Concert

Gypsy reunited again to perform in aid of a special fundset up to assist families of medical personnel who died in the cause of their duty caring for patients infected with SARS.

With the same line-up of Dixie, Don, Joe, Mel and Joe J, Gypsy once again captivated the crowd with an inspired performance.

The concert opened with Pour Some Sugar On Me. This was followed by Long Train Running, Pretty Woman and Paranoid.

Things slowed down with Love Me and then the pace picked up again with The Kids Wanna Rock and Can't Get Enough.

The night came to a close with a medley comprising Sweet Child O' Mine, It's My Life and Enter Sandman. Obviously, it just wasn't enough for the crowd but it seems that we will just have to wait for another event of this nature before Gypsy again ignites on stage.

Gypsy, the band from Singapore, is notable because 5 members are brothers. Gypsy was officially formed in 1979. Prior to that, the brothers were playing in a number of different bands. Only when they decided to combine forces did the chemistry really take off. They unleashed a brand of rock that was never seen in Singapore. Gypsy introduced Rock Music to the local night scene. Singapore has never been the same since. Gypsy performed at all the leading clubs in Singapore including Rainbow, Peppermint Park, The Ion, Tavern Europa, Time Tunnel, Sparkles, The Haven, Gossip and the list goes on and on...........

Mel, Dixie & Joe in ConcertThey are also well known for their histrionics and energetic live performances. Most notably, the Merlion Week Concert that was held at the Padang and which gathered an audience of over 80,000. Numerous New Year Countdowns - at the National Lend a handStadium and Padang. One of their numerous coups was pulled off in the first ever Police Week Concert held at the Police Academy. Gypsy thrilled the crowd when they performed together with the Police Girl Pipers, something never done before and never done since.

The members of Gypsy do not perform together as a band regularly now, as they have diversified careerwise and also because of personal commitments. However, the group does get together every now and then, especially when their services are required for charity. Gypsy was always and will continue to be a friend of the less fortunate.
