The Citadel story

Citadel is from what I herd is a Roman like level all white. My friend said one time when he was playing Goldeneye that he clicked Stachu and it went to Citadel heres his story: The Citadel level does not exist in the final version of Goldeneye. I've collected various Mission Select pictures of it, but I've never found a screenshot of the level actually being played. Lots of different shots exist, and strangely enough, they're all of a setup screen. Setup screens are easy to make fakes with, so that explains the large number. The huge mystery, and big question regarding the level, is "What was it?". We'll never know for sure. In my opinion, it was just as Rare stated, a rough, test level. Perhaps it was even used to test out gadgets and items for missions. It was removed from the final game. Had this rough test level been left in the game, we would all think it was a useless waste of time. But since it wasn't, most people are eager to find out what it is, to satisfy simple curiousity. The only real clue, of the Citadel's existence, is the two names that still remain in the Goldeneye cartridge. The Citadel's name was the only part of the level that was not removed from the final game. You can use numerous Gameshark codes to view the names, one in Capitals, the other not. (Gameshark codes for above pics are A002B199 00AE, and A002B235 00AF) We can see inside the game's memory, the two Citadel names, one with capitals, the other without. They are located after the Egyptian Temple's name. It's the last level name in the game's memory. You can name any level "CITADEL", but the Gameshark code to rename the Egyptian level is 8002AEFB 00AF. Just for fun, here's Rare's official answer regarding the existence of the level: "'Citadel' was a very rough test level designed during the early stages of multiplayer mode. It's not in the finished game in any shape or form, and Oddjob and Mayday wouldn't be in it if it was." I'm glad that Rare USED to reply to our many questions, but they've stopped now. They only gave out a few bits of info, which is a lot better than none at all. Notice how they tried to mislead us... During the early stages of Multiplayer doesn't mean that the level was only for Multiplayer. Notice how they mentioned Oddjob and Mayday not being it it... That means that it could have been a mission at one time. And, it's not entirely true that it's not in the game in any shape or form, as the name can be activated with a Gameshark. Here is one of the first known screenshot of the Citadel. It's in the place where Egyptian should be. We can rename Egyptian to CITADEL with the Gameshark code 8002AEFB 00AF. But a code to modify the level picture into the one seen in these screenshots has not been found. This rather controversial screenshot almost has to be a fake. But the mission picture looks almost exactly like the level's picture, above. The similatities are unbelievable. The obvious spelling mistake in the Ashton Martin Objective, (Aston Martin, Bond's Car) makes it a certain fake. But could Rare have accidentally made this simple spelling mistake? One other spelling mistake occurs in the game though: Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec God, where Rare left out the "l". A whole series of these 007 Mode screenshots exists. Ones for Citadel, Moon Base, and Buddha Temple. This is almost certainly a fake, and it wouldn't be hard to do at all. The Egyptian Temple is now Mission #9. If this is supposed to be real, What happened to the other Missions? The odds of this being a real screenshot aren't good, and I'm positive that it's a fake. The real deal about the Citadel Level: Okay, we know next to nothing about this level. About the only thing we do know is that it was a Multiplayer level. Rare stated that, but they also said that Oddjob and Mayday wouldn’t be in it. Why would they have appeared in a Multiplayer level? It seems as if Rare slipped and admitted that it was a mission... otherwise why would they need to say that the two stars wouldn't be there? If it was a mission level, it didn't last very long. The name of it (if it ever was there) has been removed from the list of mission names in the memory. It does appear with the Multiplayer level names though, not the mission. Here is the order in which the Multiplayer names appear in the memory: Random Temple Complex Library Caves Facility Bunker Archives Caverns Egyptian Citadel dest (Frigate) stat (Statue) crad (Cradle) They're in order, except for Library, which is made up of Stack and Basement. Those two names are located in completely different parts of the memory. Maybe because they were only available as library, then it was decided to split them up? Back to the Citadel, it's name appears after Egyptian. So does that mean it would have been the final level to choose from? And if the level names are in order, with mission levels last, then wouldn't that mean that the Citadel would have been the last Mission level too? THE CITADEL BUNKER I've also heard that the Citadel was once the first Bunker, which doesn't make sense, otherwise the second Bunker would also be called that, so this photo could have easily been taken from a Gameshark. Also notice how the Egyptian level exists, so this picture is very likely made with a Gameshark. *UPDATE* I've received mail from someone who states that this picture was in fact made with a Gameshark. The Gameshark level name modifier code A002 AC91 00AF will rename the Bunker to Citadel. The Bunker was never called the Citadel, and this rumor was only created by what is below... Regarding the false Rumor, someone found a code to play the "Citadel Bunker". It's nothing at all, it's just the Bunker with the doors, crates, and enemies taken out. And, you'll start in front of the big screen. It has nothing at all to do with the Citadel, no matter what you hear. It just renames the level, and lets you play the empty Bunker. With this in mind, and no expectation of a cool level, here is the code: A002AC91 00AF, 8002A8F6 0014. It is actually a different Bunker, and Bond is even wearing a different suit. Your in game paused mission screen is titled "E R R O R", and "There is no briefing for this mission." This picture was in fact made with a Gameshark. In Multi, on the Multiplayer level select screen, the Facility pic is replaced by a Question Mark, along with the Citadel name. This screen appears. Press start, and you'll start a one player Agent Mission in the Facility. It's pretty much useless, but here's the code: 8102B523 0001 8102B11F 00AF 8102B11D 00AE 8102B185 0001 8102B123 0010 There is another code similar to this, that will make the Multiplayer select level Egyptian, be the Question Mark named Citadel. It's exactly the same, only the Egyptian's pic will be changed, and you'll play in the empty Bunker. If you must have the code, it's: 8102B523 0001 8102B17D 00AE 8102B17F 00AF 8102B185 0001 8102B183 0010 CITADEL FAKES: Here's the latest Citadel fake. It all started as post on a Messageboard, promising the code to be posted on the web later. The whole thing of course turned out to be a complete hoax, as is this screenshot to go with it, which was cut and pasted from a beta facility picture. We were to believe that with a one hundred line Gameshark code, we could access 'The Citadel', which the 'creator' proved to be a very rough test level, with pieces and graphics missing. This is what the creator intended to show with this fake screenshot. Of course, like I said, this was COMPLETELY made up, and there is no code to access the level, nor can you even get this screenshot to appear on your TV. When I first heard of this code, I thought it would have been someone editing an existing level, moving and changing walls, ect, and modifying it to a level of their own, making it seem as though a new level had been found. But of course, it was a complete hoax, and no new level was created, nor was an old one found. This screenshot that has been found turns out to be fake. It is an edited version of a screenshot found in the Instruction Booklet, page 20. The crosshair position and everything else is the same, the Citadel name has simply been edited in. You can even tell just by taking a close look at the word Citadel, and noticing that it doesn't fit properly with the style of the rest of the text. It almost looks like C i t a d e l. Here's a fake screenshot of the Citadel as a selectable level in Multiplayer. It appears as though you could select almost any level to play in Multiplayer. I've received information from two sources that know this picture is FAKE. The picture looked a little weird, so I was suspicious. Thanks to 007's Control Bunker, and to Oddjob for giving me a site that shows it's fake. The site showed step by step, with pictures the making of the pic, mirroring, cutting and pasting parts of the Aztec and Egyptian. Compare them with the end result. Unfortunately, that page isn't on the net anymore. I wish I would have saved them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With a Goldeneye c2003
