TOP 10(X-BOX) SHOOTING GAMES OF 2003:
10. Ghost Recon: Island Thunder--Once again, the Ghost Recon series brought us a great storyline, and a very realistic view of the Cuban environment. It was a good game, but not good enough (in my opinion) to beat out some of these games. Some feel that the fact that all you can see is the crosshair when you play was a major fault in the game.
9. Counter-strike--I don't believe that many will agree with me here. It's a fun game, but it's not for everybody. If you're looking at online shooting games, well, then counter-strike is one of the best. Here I'm looking at it without X-box live. It's still great. You don't need to have missions to make a great game. It can be addictive sometimes, and it's great practice for when you do decide to go online. Besides, it's basically the same thing on the console, except you aren't playing REAL people (and there's no multiplayer feature).
8. Medal of Honor: Rising Sun--I know it's probably one of the better games here, but one, i don't own it, and two, Desert Storm is more fun for me anyway. Watch out though, because the next Medal of Honor title (Pacific Assault)is going to be a good one. Like Desert Storm, this game is based on real life events. Whether you are in Pearl Harbor or Japan, you feel as though you are there in the game. Clearly, this game has great graphics.
7. Desert Storm 2: Back to Baghdad--This is a fun game. The fact that it enables you to undertake multiplayer missions adds to the fun. What got me started was the original game (Conflict: Desert Storm). It's based on real life situations, and it allows you to drive tanks, and trucks across the deserts of Iraq. You will need stealth, and help from your bombers to beat this game. In one level, you are even forced to escape from a POW camp. I won't say more though, because I don't want to ruin the experience for first time players of this great game.
6.True Crime: Streets of LA--This is a game that some people like, and some people don't. I haven't played it myself, but I've seen it. It doesn't look as bad as SOME people say it is. Hey, it beat out XIII and Freedom Fighters for the Best Action game in the 2003 Video Game Awards, so it can't be that bad. The graphics aren't as great as, say, a Splinter Cell, and I haven't yet experienced the gameplay firsthand. However, I'd say it's not THAT bad.
5. XIII--Here's another one I haven't played myself, but it does look good. I admit that I had to laugh at the "cartoonish" graphics when I first saw it. However, I think it's pretty cool. With a split screen multiplayer that reminds me A LITTLE of the great Goldeneye 007 multiplayer (on N64), and a good plot, this game isn't really bad after all. Now, I've seen this game and read about it, and i'm sorry if you think otherwise. If you do have any ideas of games that should've made the list or games that shouldn't be where I've put them, please let me know. I haven't played this game, but it seems like a good title to me. Don't let thirteen be your unlucky number. Purchase this game today!
4. Freedom Fighters--One of the Nominees for both game of the year and action game of the year at the Video Game Awards, Freedom Fighters is a good game. A few aspects are a little confusing, such as how the character gets into the situation he's in. The fact that characters will say the same thing a couple of times and/or that they sometimes will say to do something after you've already done it are just little things that take a little off this game. However, it still is a great game with a great storyline (the russians are taking over the US! haha, great). The multiplayer feature is a little like capture the flag, and you could spend a lot of time playing it (especially 2 on 1 if you know what I mean). Cheats such as slow-mo are awesome, as they add a really dramatic feel to the game (with the music playing in the background).
3. Rainbow Six 3--Ah, yet another good Clancy game. The graphics can be a little "sketchy" at times, such as when enemies run at you shooting, however, it is a great game to have on your shelf. Ding Chavez and his "crew" make their way through exciting, yet challenging levels. The commands you can give your team are many, and they'll help you out in the long run. Rainbow Six 3 is a great game to own. What is dissapointing is that multiplayer is not offered on the console version. One player is great, but it's nice to be able to play with a friend once in a while. Even Splinter Cell noticed that, and will have a multiplayer feature on its next title.
2. Mission Impossible: Operation Surma--This is a great game, based on the Mission Impossible movies. The cut-scenes are impressive, and the graphics are pretty good. The fact that it was based on a movie, and it followed a great game like Splinter Cell brings it down in the ratings just a bit. However, in my opinion this is the best movie-based game out there. Yes, even better than James Bond's "Nightfire," which didn't make the list. It's a lot like Splinter Cell, but the objectives and enemies Ethan Hunt faces enables this game to be able to combat with a title like Splinter Cell. We all know that multiplayer would be fun to have, but with games like these, where sometimes you don't need multiplayer to have fun are very impressive. The many gadgets in Ethan's arsenal make you feel like you are a real secret agent. Once you play it, you'll know it's a real great one.
1. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Ah yes, the great Splinter Cell. This had game of the year written all over it even before it came out. With great graphics, a suitable soundtrack, and characters like Sam Fisher, this game "takes the cake" when it comes to action games. This game of stealth has you sneaking up behind your enemies, gathering information, and eventually planning to assasinate a former Georgian president who has been causing trouble. Players will develop feelings for people like Sam Fisher and Junior Wilkes, and sometimes may be able to relate to them more as the game goes on. Let me tell you, with levels like these, and a soundtrack such as this, you do feel like you are actually there. The sequel to this great game (Pandora Tomorrow) is one of the most anticipated games coming out, including Halo 2. This game came out before all the games on this list (You think game-makers would learn something from this!). Maybe the fact that it came out a while ago, and people were playing it too much lost it some popularity. Believe me, every once in a while you CAN play this game after you beat it. There are other possibilities you can look at for things like getting into levels. If you don't already own this one or haven't owned it at some point, you are missing out on a lot.
