Canoeing At Hungerford

10R spent a wet weekend at the Croft Centre, Hungerford, in Spring 1996 (I think). We set off on the Friday afternoon, arriving in plenty of time to put up tents and explore the site.

Two large green tents provided accommodation for pupils; Nicola and Miss Thompson came along to give support. As I recall, Friday night was fairly quiet, year 10 being far too grown up to indulge in the usual late night fun and games.

Paddling was on the Kennet and Avon Canal, distinguished by a large number of locks. Without a key to open them, carrying was the only option.

We had also picked a weekend when the banks were lined by fishermen - not the best time to find out that you don't know how to steer.

Fortunately, people soon got the idea, although everyone wasn't quite as laid back as Laura.

The other problem with canoeing on canals is the narrow width. Clare discovered how easy it is to hit the bank. In the centre of the boat is instructor Nicola.

Nicola P and Clare both continued their canoeing with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Our target for the day was to get to Newbury. We almost reached it, stopping for lunch at Kintbury, before making the long journey back. By that time arms were tired, and there were one or two sense of humour failures before the campsite mercifully came into view.
