Knoppix, although not the first live Linux CD on the scene, worked so well that it jump-started the live-CD craze. It's also a great way to easily get a working Debian system on your hard drive.
But Knoppix historically hasn't been compatible with normal Debian packaging and upgrade tools. For that, there's Kanotix, a Knoppix derivative produced in Germany, which is based on, and completely compatible with, Debian Sid. It's a live-CD meant to be installed to your hard drive.
