DISTORT SAVAGE #9
It went out on May 17th and 18th at Midwest Hardcore Fest in Minneapolis. This is my most recent zine. I haven't really had time to write as I usually did all of my writing in school. This was still done a long time ago and a lot of shit has changed. Whatever.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
COVER
I made a cover that said Wild Youth Crew Presents: Distort Savage #9. It said KIKOKAKAKU!! which was a little inside joke for a while. It was supposed to be like a war cry that everyone did before they went into a killer mosh pit. It kind of died out when Paul and I moved. It also said If it isn't Japanese...I hate it! It said Hardcore, Skateboard, Ninja, Caca at the bottom. I had Paul screenprint covers that enveloped the whole zine. I honestly forgot what it looked like. It said If it isn't Japanese...I hate it! and it had a picture of Paul on the back. It also said TRC on it which was another inside joke about the Chinese Tempo Regulatory Committee (i wrote about it in one of the other zines) so TRC happens to be the first letters in all of our names. So the T had a picture of Tony's face, the R had a picture of Raul's face and the C had a picture of my face. I thought that was really cool and the all turned out great.

DISTORT SAVAGE #9
I've decided that I'm only going to go to DS #10. I am moving some time after graduation. This is the ninth installment of the zine. It will go out at MWHCFest. I think I'll make it extra thick. Everything is going good. Whatever. Skateboardin. Workin. Chillin. You can check out the DS website at https://www.angelfire.com/ultra/distortsavage/index.html. I am working on getting all of the old zines up. It has shows and stuff about us. I wil probably put some pictures in here. So watch out. It's all good. The shows have been fun. We are all going good. I listen to mostly Japanese thrash, grindcore, hardcore, and powerviolence and stuff. I don't like much American music. I don't know. See you at the shows. Chris Van Damme.

SHOW REVIEW
Diminished - MPLS
ASS - MPLS
Outside the Fences - MPLS
Pirate Frontier - MPLS
@ Kalvin's DebutantE Ball on 4/12/03.
We rolled up into this place a half an hour late. I'm thinking punk show. We got there and there were like 20 other punkers there. A bunch of pretty girls too! (sorry girl...) We sat around for a while. We were skating in the street a little bit. Andy Peterson's Arme showed up. We chilled.
Pirate Frontier.
I know all the guys in the band. I see that at all of the punky hardcore shows I go to. They are all cool guys. They played pretty simple chaos punk style noise. It was a lot of tough part to fast punk beat. Kalvin is the singer. He was the one putting on the show. It is his mom's house! They were pretty good. It was like 90's style Minneapolis hardcore punk. Good to see. Pretty fun. The rest of the night was pretty shaky because I was very intoxicated. The show started getting really wild.
Outside the Fences.
I got their demo CD a while ago. I thought it totally SUCKED! Live, though, they were really good. They had a lot of soft metallic intros and stuff. We started getting low. Menomonie crew showed up. We were moshing really hard. I was throwing down. It was totally fun. Everybody was totally having a great time. I think this show was the most dancing OTF had ever seen at one of their shows. I t was great. I liked OTF's vocalists. High pitched screams. I look forward to seeing them again.
ASS.
My friend Jim. Always a ripping band. Slow crustcore. Really fun to see live. I picked up their tape when they played at the Hub. Great band. They are from Burnsville. Ninja territory. I was really drunk by now and was ready to party. I know all of their songs. We were screaming along. It was a total party. I got punched in the jaw REALLY hard by flat top (Fry). Or should I say...Small Fry. Haha! We were singing along. ASS played a 7 Seconds cover. Young Till I Die. My favorite 7 Seconds song. They played it very well too. We were all crowding the mic. We were dancing really hard. Somebody lost a contact lens. After their set we went outside. Me and Menomonie crew were drinking. Every guy in Diminished was totally trahsed. It took them like 30 minutes to set up. I had to leave before they started playing. What a fun night. That was one of the funnest shows in a while. Since He Who Corrupts. I can't wait to see this line up again. This showspace was really fun. They said they will keep doing shows there.

SHOW REVIEW
Holding On - Minneapolis
In Control - Oxnard, California
Modern Life is War - Iowa
Akimbo - Seattle, Washington
@ the Babylon on 4/4/03.
In Control! I saw them about a year ago. They ripped. I was pretty stoked about this show.
Akimbo.
Akimbo played. Three piece...rock...hardcore? They were alright. The singer was yelling. The played pretty slow rock influenced hardcore. The slow parts were pretty lame, but the fast parts were good. The guitarist looked like one of the Strokes guys. (yeah i judge everyone by the way they dress) They were alright.
Modern Life is War.
I've seen these guys a ton of times. They played a bunch of new songs. I think they just recorded their new record. It is coming out soon...I can't remember the date. One of the new songs sounds like the Rocky theme song! That was funny. The set was pretty tame though. I hate singing along and the stage is too low for me to stagedive. I brought a bucket, but I didn't have time to put tape around the bottome so it was slipping all over the place. Those Oxnard guys are pretty wild moshers. It was the tamest MLIW show I have ever been to. Nobody was really doing anything becuase they didn't know the new songs. The new songs are typical MLIW style. Slow pissed off hardcore. Kinda fun.
In Control.
This band really kicked ass. They are the perfect mix between fast hardcore/thrash and metalcore breakdowns. The bodybuilders were in full effect. Raul was doing the dance, spinny kicky thing. Funny. I tried it once. The first time I was going to jump in the song had ended abruptly. Embarrassing. I did it though. Lots of pretty boys. Thid kid with the big mohawk stepped on my boot and ripped my shoe in half! Not exaggerating. He was wearing huge boots. He supposedly touched a girl's boob and got bitched at. Then he started throwing Tony around. So kid, if you are reading this, fuck you. The singer for In Control talked about suicide. Great. I totally agree. Don't fucking talk about it. Don't put the idea into someone's head. They ripped the rest of their set.
Holding On.
I was pissed when I found out these guys were headlining. Everyone has seen them a million times so who cares? They played some covers that were lame as usual. I heard they were going to retire some songs, but didn't hear that they did. They played a really long set. No stagediving for me. I'm not tall enough anymore. Okay show.

SHOW REVIEW
Comeback Kid - Winnipeg
Misery Signals - Wisconsin
Damage Deposit - MPLS
The Good Fight - MPLS
@ the Fireball Espresso Cafe on 4/16/03
This was a great way to kick off my spring break. Wednesday night show on enemy turf. We were preparing mosh techniques for quite some tome. I missed the Good Fight. The show actually started on time. Damage Deposit was setting up so Eric Sloane and I went out to the car to get some beverages. 2 bottles of beer in 2 minutes. We came back inside.
Damage Deposit.
The punkers were all dancing. It was pretty dismal though. I think the metalcore kids were trying to make fun of us. It was pretty weak. Damage Deposit is starting to sound really good and tight. Their new songs are awesome.
Misery Signals.
I thought I had seen these guys before. I guess I was mistaken. Eric and I knew that it was time to get serious...metalcore jock mosh style. We went bag out to the car and hit the bag of wine. We came back inside and we were totally blasted. Andy broke out the XfootballX. I think it was very welly recieved. I threw the sticky lizard at a kid when he was spinny kicking. Misery Signals was okay. Totally metalcore. They picked us out of the crowd and started spinny kicking us. Eric and I were totally getting kicked. So me and Eric were totally making fun of these kids. So I was doing a bunch of spinny kicks. The kids started pushing me out of the pit. Tony did a somersault on the floor and somebody stomped on his face!! Cool. Me and Eric were totally getting crazy. I got kicked in the stomach so hard I almost puked. What the hell?! They started the violence. I wanted to punch that motherfucker so bad...he would have annihilated me.
Comeback Kid.
Fucking Christian jock metal hardcore. Eric and I went out to get a little more wine. The rest of the show was pretty much a daze. We were dancing around and the metalcore kids were getting really pissed. I don't really know why. We weren't doing anything abnormal (do you rike it?) We were doing the same shit we do at thrash shows. The jocks were literally pushing us out of the pit. Eric stepped in the path of an enraged jock and got punched in the face. Eric just stepped by him and the kid pushed Eric and punched him in the face. So me and Eric, Fry, Nate, Kalvin and Tony did Wall of Death. They started kicking the wall. I pretty much took the wall down of one of the kids that kicked me and he pushed the wall all the way to the back of the place and pushed us on the ground. He held up his fists at us and flipped us off. And we are the violent ones? Fuck the jocks.

SHOW REVIEW (by raul)
Bonestorm - Maple Grove
Valley of A'chor - Maple Grove
A New Renaissance - Some Suburb
@ the Fireball Espresso Cafe on 4/19/03
This made me want to get in the bathtub with a toaster. So I missed the first band and only saw a few songs of the second band. I don't think I missed much. The first band I saw was Valley of A'chor. They play pretty straight forward metal with members of Section Hate and Bonestorm. The songs weren't bad. When I got to the Fireball I waslk in and see like fifty kids that were straight out of the Korn concert. The second band was A New Renaissance which is seriously one of the worst bands I have ever seen. They sound like a poseur poppy punk band that just seemed too much like one of those high school bandd, you know? Like the only people that go to their shows are the band members's friends from school. All these poseur kids wanted to start a circle pit so this consists of people in the crowd saying, "C'mon!" and making circular motions with their hands. That was typical. The band asked the metalcore kids to throw down. They were like, "Come on guys! Show us what you do!" I thought it was kind of funny. All these pretty boys looked at each other and a few laughed. I sorta felt bad for them. I'm not gonna laugh but I'm not gonna dance either. I thought those guys sucked and they totally should have played first and not third. These kids were like in high school and it was very apparent. Last up was Bonestorm and I'd have to say I'm a big fan of Bonestorm. None of that pussy bullshit slow guitar cry baby shit. Just fast screaming metalcore with good breakdowns. This was like the fourth time I had seen them play and each time I'm impressed. These guys don't try to act tough and they aren't pretty boys. They can actually play too! The dance floor was going good. Not too many players on the field. So you actually get some room to do more complicated maneuvers. Also, at one point they dedicated a song to whomever, then started playing after a minute or so, they stopped and told the guy to come up on stage. He sang the next three words or so and then they went into a breakdown. It was kind of funny to see all the kids file onto the dance floor. They also played the Happy Birthday song to some girl. I'd have to say it was a pretty fun show except A New Renaissance played the longest set ever. I had fun. Y'all should think about going to see Bonestorm some time as well. They're pretty good for a metalcore band. BUG EYES!

Any Last Words - St. Paul
Damage Deposit - MPLS
Olsen Twin Suicide - Mankato
@Studio Academy in Rochester on 4/25/03
Any Last Words cancelled at the last minute. That sucks. So it was prom night. We all piled into Tony's car and drove down to Rochester. It took an hour and a half. We got to the place no problem. It is a tiny building that is some kind of art school. Trish set up the show. We got there about 15 minutes early. We were chillin it for a while. Damage Deposit set up. Andy, Eric, Sarah, adn Manda sowed up. Eric hooked up the grape juice. This place has no readmittance. Weak!
Damage Deposit
DD played. They dedicated their set to Tony because it was his 18th birthday! There were a lot of poser Rochester High School kids there. It was like one on one slam fest. The room they had the show in was fucking HUGE! We took up like a quarter of the room. I gave Tony 16 of his spankings..I still owe him two!! Minimal moshing. There were a few kids that came down for the show. It was fun.
Olsen Twin Suicide.
OTS set up. I've seen them one time before. They play thrash metal. They are from Mankato. They have a lot of rockin songs. So Eric was plastered. I was drunk. Sarah and Manda were drunk. So we broke out the prop bag and went wild. A GOOD wild! Jumping up and down...making fun of Raul and his metalcore buddies...doing spinny kicks. There were a lot of slow metal parts. We were all slow dancing. There were a lot of poser kids in the pit which was fun. I couldn't decide if the kids were plotting against me or if they liked my moves. They kept giving me weird looks...but I was drunk! So it was a lot of fun. So afterwards we went to a fucking ace pizza restaurant. Everyone who came down from the cities was there. We got Tony a birthday pizza. We had to leave. I told mom I would be home at 12:30. We left the place at 11:20 and made it home on time. 70 minutes to go form downtown Rochester to Savage! We were lucky we got through almost all the lights on 42!

SHOW REVIEW
Don Austin - Akron, Ohio
Damage Deposit - MPLS
Last Battle - St. Paul
@ Pirate's Cove on 5/2/03
Last Battle.
Everybody was totally fucking wasted already when the band started. We were all dancing around like idiots. People were spilling beer all over the floor. Te singer threw a container of pink sparkly sand in the air followed by party streamers. The floor was really slippery. Kalvin was all over the place. He spilt Vodka all over the floor and then wanted to know who drank it all! Haha! He was like ready to pass out. The band played an awesome set and I really look forward to seeing them again. We went back outside. Everybody had to get more beer and such. Felix was getting a broom to clean up the floor in the basement. He said, "Mine is the broom that sweeps clean those who disbelieve." or some other fucking whacked out comic book shit. Eric was like, "What the fuck?" Like I have always said; don't trust anyone over thirty. Damage Deposit set up.
Damage Deposit.
I have seen these guys like a million times in the last few months. They played mostly new songs. We were gettin wild and crazy in the pit. Everybody was partaking in the dancefloor. It was awesome. They played a pretty decent set. It was fun. I granted Eric permission to my ski mask. I think I will give that to him. It was a really good time. It was getting pretty late and I think a bunch of people left. Big mistake because Don Austin fucking ripped so hard. Andy was here. I think Erica and Ashley from my school took their leave. We got some beer and went inside. Don Austin was late. They called from Wisconsin saying that they were on their way. They got there on time. They set up. I said hello. They had a case of beer holding their bass drum in place. Good. So they set up.
Don Austin.
They totally fucking ripped. Fast and fucking aggressive hardcore. They were totally awesome. We were going crazy. We kept running into the band members because we were all so drunk. Abdulle was totally fucked up. We danced super hard. They handed out these pink tank tops the were absolutely the most hilarious things I have ever seen. On the front it says Don Austin American Basketball Challenge or something like that. It says This is Your World and has a picture of the Earth, then it says This is My World and it has a picture of a basketball. On the back it has a picture of some guy with a tshirt on that says I Love Don Austin and he has hair all over his body and he has a huge erect penis. It has a word bubble that says, "Fuckin ROAR!" They gave them out to the hardest dancers. I got one, Eric got one, Fry got one, Will got one, Freshman kid go tone. We are all wearing those things fucking proudly. Awesome. They played a super awesome set. After the show we hung out a little bit and I was thinking, "Where the hell is Tony?!?" I go outside and Tony and Manda come fucking prancin their asses back in the place. I was like, "Where the fuck have you guys been?!" They went for a WALK!!! Haha! I'm like, "You guys missed Don Austin." and they were like, "Oh." Nice excuse fuckers. So we are fucking around at this place for a while and we decide to go to Fry's friend's house. We drove like 25 blocks to this place. Andy and Fry and Eric led the way followed by me, Tony, Kalvin, Abdulle, and Jessica, followed by Sarah, Manda, Will, and Freshman kid. We get to this place and all these fucked up looking, drunk, punk kids pile out of the cars right after a show. We all fucking file into this poseur punk kid's huge fucking mansion. We are all crazy punk kids and we go into this place and there are all these fucking POPULAR kids! High school kids. OH GAWD! These kids are losers!! Not even punks! So me and Jessica and a few other kids pretty much just sat around and talked about how much it sucked. We left. Everybody had a fucking great time.
