What is a VIN?
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17 character sequence of numbers and letters assigned to each car by the manufacturer when the car is built. This number is stamped into the car in several places. The letters "I", "O", or "Q" never appear. Each car manufactured from 1981 on has a unique VIN.

The VIN can usually be found on the driver's side of the dashboard by the window, or on the driver's side doorjamb. Your car's VIN is also listed on your auto insurance card, and on your state vehicle registration form.

Using your car's VIN, AutoTrader.com can offer additional information to potential buyers on your car's Detail page. We can decode the year, make, model, engine, fuel type and driveline (front, rear or four-wheel drive). With this information, we can also determine which features were standard at the time of manufacture.

If you do enter a VIN, please take care to enter it accurately. An invalid VIN will cause our system to invalidate your Listing and it will not appear on the site.
