Collectively, we know the comings and goings, the in-roads and dead-ends all over the District. We are the people who work closest to the power brokers, we know intimately every copy and fax that goes through our office. At our core, we are Assistants. And while this sounds subservient, it certainly is not. (Remember the day you were out sick and the office almost burned down?) Most of us consider this a temporary stop up the ladder. We’re paying our dues and we’re damn good at it. While we may be in the trenches right now, we are the future. We are rising up and are the leaders of tomorrow. We are cogs in the machine, but we are learning how the machine works in order to one day operate the whole thing. In this vein, I believe we have immense power and potential. I believe that by joining together, networking, and becoming resources for each other, that we can only grow individually and collectively. · We have inside knowledge of various sorts of businesses, political institutions and non-profits. We can recommend to each other the choicest of employers or the ones to avoid. · The networking possibilities are endless which will help you at your current job while expanding your DC rolodex. · We have something of a shared experience. Getting together offers us a chance to vent about the bad things and share the good things about being an assistant. · For many of us, this is one of our first jobs out of college, but we can still help each other navigate the DC scene, socially or professionally. Don’t forget to sign up on the listserv!!—Send a message to DCassistants@hotmail.com with the word “add” in the subject line. We’ll send you info on more happy hours or other events tailored for an “Assistant” audience. And we’ll never ever SPAM you. Pinky swear.
