Not the usual friendlies in Neath this morning to finish off the season.
Instead, it was a very unforgiving knockout
tournament. No room for errors ! As the draw went on, it was looking more and
more likely that the two Garden Village
squads would end up playing each other in the first round. We all held our
breath...and luckily (!), it was Bryncoch for
one squad, and Cimla for the other. This was going to be hard.
A fine and spirited performance against the excellent Bryncoch wasn't enough to
save the first Garden Village team to
play, and they went out in the first round, much to their frustration,
especially after reaching the Treboeth tournament
final the day before. Dai had no time to dwell on this blow though, as the other
Garden Village team were now about to
kick off against Cimla. Tournament veterans now, the boys wound themselves up
with their pre-match chant, and it did
the job as they put on a superb show, playing their hearts out and dominating
the game against Cimla, producing a well-
deserved 4-0 victory. Next up was...Bryncoch !
Were the boys intimidated by the side that had beaten their team-mates ? Not in
the slightest. Garden Village had the
best of the first half, with plenty of chances. The second half saw Bryncoch
rally, but it still only appeared a matter
of time before Garden Village scored. With only a minute to go, a rushed Village
throw-in, across the pitch, instead of
up the touchline, saw Bryncoch leap at this chance, and Garden Village were a
goal down.
Bryncoch are too good a team to leave even one small mistake unpunished, and,
despite looking the stronger team
throughout the match, Garden Village were soon out of the competition. A
disappointing result, but thats football.
Both Garden Village teams can be proud of their performances this morning. They
both played some great football,
against a very good Bryncoch team, and the results do not adequately reflect how
well they did, and how close the
matches, especially the second, were.
Trophies were presented to all the boys, to recognise their achievements
throughout the season at Neath.
A big "Thank You" is due to the organiser, Andy, for two years of
superbly-run Sunday mini-football
at this venue.

Four hard games this morning, and Garden Village emerged victorious in three of
them. Every single game was a pleasure
to watch, with all the boys playing their hearts out. Stand-in goalies Rhys and
Aled made some awesome saves, as did our
regular goal-keeping hero Aaron, aided by our brick wall of a defence, Alex,
Jack and Ioan.
Our hard-working, talented midfielders did their job with style, and our
strikers didn't disappoint, providing us with
another six goals to add to our total. Your goal-scoring record speaks for
itself.
Once again, teamwork paid off to produce our wins and even our single loss was a
close, tense affair, which saw
some of the best football of the day, and could quite easily have gone either
way. Another fine performance.
You can all be proud of yourselves boys, in every single game.
I should also give a mention to all the mums, dads and other relatives who
enthusiastically support the boys week after
week, with exactly the right positive and sporting attitude toward all the
Garden Village players and their opponents.

Another superb team effort saw the boys win all four matches today, scoring 11
goals, and making their total so
far this season a well-deserved 104 ! Well done to all this week's scorers,
Brody, Dexter, Jay, Luke, Tyler,
Connor and Lewys, of course, but we mustn't forget that those goals today were
made by the likes of Thomas,
Scott, Ben and Rhys and their runs and well-timed passes. Our leads were
maintained by the brilliant defending
of the ever-impressive Alex, Ioan, Aled and Jack, and of course by our volunteer
goalies for this week, Kieron,
Cathan and Jac. Everybody contributed to our wins today. A good morning's
football, against good opponents.
The boys showed great skill, gave 100% effort, and played (and won) as a team.

None of our strikers are goal-hangers, they all work hard to make goals happen.
Our midfielders work hard in attack and defence, making goal-scoring
opportunities and denying our opponents.
Our defence is absolutely solid. Very few opponents get past them.
Well done boys. Keep it up.

After a team trip to see the Swans beat Carlisle 5-0 at the Liberty Stadium
yesterday, the boys were inspired this morning,
and in glorious sunshine, put on an excellent display of football skills and
teamwork in their last matches of the year.
Three confident wins, and even the single loss against Cwrt Herbert Blacks was a
very close, and very
entertaining end-to-end match that really could have gone either way.

We are lucky to have two squads of very enthusiastic boys with a superb team
spirit and attitude.
All the boys have improved since the beginning of the season, and built on their
skills and especially their teamwork,
and this shows in their results in the first half of the season.

Hopefully the boys (and parents) will have a good Christmas, and with such a
strong team, we look forward to lots more
entertaining matches and even better results in the New Year, as we head toward
the tournaments at the end of the season.

The third day of football in a row hadn't worn the boys out this morning, as
they stormed through their
matches. First, the "oldies" calmly and efficiently defeated St
Josephs, after Scott smacked the ball
firmly into the back of the net in the first half, and Lewys made sure of
victory in the second.

Scott had the best game he has had for a while, working hard all over the pitch,
along with the mighty Dexter,
and Callum, and was ably supported by the defence, who shut out St Josephs
formidable strikers. Alex, Ioan and
Jack D allowed the St Josephs attackers no room to do anything useful. Rhys had
plenty of speedy, darting
runs, working well with Lewys this week, and was unlucky not to score.

Jay's goal against Gowerton Juniors was a superb strike that left the goalie
wondering where it had
come from, and it came after he had already played a central role in the team,
winning the ball and feeding
it forward time after time. Equally impressive was Thomas, whose superbly timed
passing consistently beat
the defence. The entire team of "youngsters" played a lovely, fluid
passing game again.

Both Garden Village teams played the last games of the morning, which are
usually longer, and this morning
was no exception, with both halves lasting 15 minutes instead of the usual 8.
The extra time allowed our
boys to really get into their stride, with Lewys scoring another, and the ever
hardworking Dexter also
rewarded with a goal for the "oldies" against Bryncoch Blacks.

The "youngsters" started slowly, but soon got up quite a head of steam
against Cwrt Herbert Whites.
Connor, showing increased confidence on the ball beat the goalie twice, Tyler
slotted his shot between
the goalies legs, and Thomas, after again setting up so many shots decided to
score one himself. The result
of this match was never in doubt, just the final score.

Thanks to our solid defence, both teams kept a clean sheet today. So well done
Aaron, Ben and Aaron S
(both wearing the gloves for one match each), Luke, Ioan, Alex and Jack D,
helped out by Brody and Aled.
All the boys showed great teamwork and excellent team spirit today, with both
teams cheering loudly
for the other when they were not playing themselves. I'm sure it helped. Well
done boys !

We played a friendly practice match between the 2 Garden Village teams today.
We played at Garden Village, Stafford Common, and it was the boys first match on
grass this season.
Read the report and see the photos on our Friendlies
Page.
We also took the new team photos for 2006-2007 to go up in the Garden Village
Club,
along with photos of all the other Garden Village teams.

A little experiment from Dave this week, with one team made up of last years
players, and the other made up
of players who started this season. The boys didn't disappoint. To watch the
matches, you wouldn't have known
which team had been playing together longer. Both goalkeepers, Aaron and Kieron
were once again confident
and reliable between the posts, bolstered by the defenders, Jack D and Ioan, and
once again Luke turned in
a superb performance at the back, denying the opposing strikers any chance of a
shot time after time.
Dexter, as usual, was all over the pitch, working very hard getting in tackles,
feeding the ball forward, and scoring.

Scott, Dylan and Ben, the midfield for the veteran team did an excellent job of
winning, and keeping possession,
and feeding the ball up the pitch to Lewys and Rhys, who would have probably
scored against Treboeth if they
had managed to keep out of each other's way a bit more in their enthusiasm to
stick the ball in the net.
Both had a much better second game against Pontardawe, where they used the space
available, and both
had good shots on target.

The team made up of this season's players really impressed this morning, and
their teamwork and passing play was spot-on.
They communicated with each other, moved sensibly into space, and played
unselfishly, like a team that had been playing
together for years. Brilliant stuff to watch, and it paid off, with a draw
against Sandfields, followed by a well-deserved
victory against Cimla, both very
good teams.

Tyler finished with 3 cracking goals this morning, and Thomas added another,
(not so quickly this week, so that
we all had a chance to see it !) , helped by the hard work of the whole team. Jay, Brody and Connor set
them up, and Luke, Jack
E, Cathan and Aled successfully kept Cimla away from our goal.
If this team continue to play
like they did this morning, they are going to do very well this season.
Well done boys.

A fine finish to the month. Against St Josephs, Garden Village dominated
entirely, with the vast majority of the
game being played in the St Joseph's half. I'm not sure our last-minute goalie,
Connor touched the ball at all,
as Alex, Luke and Brody closed down any attempt by the opposition to break out.
Tyler scored two goals, and
was unlucky not to make it three, as Jay, Ben, Dylan and Thomas fed the ball
forward time after time.
Newcomer Rhys G got in a couple of good tackles as just about every Garden
Village player, except the goalie,
had at least one shot on goal.
Lewys, determined not to be picked as goalie, hammered home a hat-trick against
Cwrt Herbert Blacks, and
Rhys made it four. Aaron once again kept a clean sheet after his holiday.

Thomas scored so quickly against West End, that I'm afraid most supporters
missed his goal. A rough, tough game
saw West End equalise on the break as, unusually, our defence slipped up, and
Ioan found himself facing
two attacking players alone. As the game progressed, and things got, at times,
perhaps a little too physical,
our boys stood up for themselves, and gave as good as they got. There was no way
they were going to let
West End intimidate them or take the lead. With all our regular strong defence
off at one point, Thomas
did some fine work at the back, as did Ioan, another last-minute goalie, who
made some fine saves when
it counted. Jay was really switched-on this morning, making some impressive
plays, but despite the hard work
of all the boys, who continued to plug away at the West End defence, the game
ended a draw.

The excitement continued into the last game of the morning against Landore
Colts. Landore stunned our boys by
opening the scoring early, but Garden Village weren't downhearted for long, as
Dexter equalised from a
corner. A close game followed, with play going back and fore, as a good Landore
team pressed our boys as
hard as we pressed them. Landore's second goal was answered by Callum for Garden
Village, and it was 2-2.
Even with continuous substitutions, the sweating boys were begging to be allowed
back on, as they all thought
they could make the difference as the game went on. Despite sterling efforts
made by Jack D and Dexter at
the back, Scott, Callum and Connor in midfield, and Lewys and Rhys up front, Garden
Village just couldn't seem
to get the ball past the Landore keeper. Aaron was unlucky to be beaten as
Landore once again took the lead
in the dying minutes, and, for all their trying, the boys were unable to get
another equaliser before the final
whistle. We lost, but only just, against a good team with a bit more luck than
us, and after some great football.
To be honest, the boys were probably hampered in this tense, close match by the
need to continually make
substitutions to ensure that everybody got a game. This meant that, at times, we
didn't have the ideal selection on
the pitch for the particular situation the team were in. Frustrating, but not
the boys fault at all.
The boys played really well this morning, with a couple of outstanding
performances.

A welcome return to form this week from both teams, with four superb
performances.
Our October blues appear to be well and truly over. With Aaron away on holiday,
the Garden Village defence
did a sterling job of ensuring that the replacement goalies didn't have to work too
hard, by keeping most of the
play in the opponents half. The boys were raring to go from the start this
morning, and their teamwork and
passing were on top form again. The new system of speedy rotation of the subs
seemed to pay off as well, keeping
all the boys involved, fresh and desperate to get back on the pitch as soon as
possible.

Connor and Tyler both got their names on the score sheet for the first time
today. Well done boys.
Lewys's second goal of the day was one of the best goals I've seen this season,
as he coolly beat 3 defenders,
and then the goalie. Luke and Brody are both proving to be solid and reliable
defenders week after week,
allowing the other half of our defensive wall, Alex and Jack to play further
forward, creating more scoring
chances for the team. In fact, there were plenty of shots on goal this week, and
we were unlucky not to
score even more goals. All the boys, on both teams played with enthusiasm and
skill this morning, and it paid
off with four good and well-deserved results. Great football from everyone. Keep
it up boys !

Sunday morning football in Neath. While our unbeaten run may be over, Dave was
still pleased with the boys
performance this morning. They faced some hard games against some very strong
teams, and they all kept
plugging away with spirit and
determination. The lack of a permanent second goalie meant that three boys took
a turn between the posts, and all three did a fine job in this very important
position.
Aaron has certainly found his place in goal, and made some great saves again,
and Jack had a good game against
St Josephs. With Lewys providing us with a goal in the last match, and Ioan
producing some very impressive
football, we look forward to next week.

And as Garden Village continued their unbeaten run of 12 matches with no losses,
everybody
played their part in another morning of football to make their coach and parents proud.
With the defence secure, and keeper Aaron complaining that he didn't have much
to do, defenders Jack D and
Alex were able to push forward and even score some goals. Jack E and Harry, each
trying a stint in goal,
along with Aaron, helped to maintain a clean sheet today. Dexter, with two goals
against Pontardawe, helped the
more experienced squad, including Lewys, Rhys, Ioan and Callum to two
well-deserved and convincing victories.
The final results never looked in doubt, as the boys all skillfully showed what
they are capable of.
Good teamwork and passing saw them dominate both matches.
The less-experienced, but no less talented squad also impressed, with Thomas
scoring with a beautifully placed
shot, after a solo run, and Harry grinning like a cheshire cat after one superb
save right on the line.
Luke, Tyler, Jay, Sam, Ben, Scott and Daniel never looked under any real
pressure as they confidently pressed
forward, but more goals somehow eluded them, despite several good shots.

Another set of excellent of results this week, with all the boys performing well
in defence and attack.
Four very exciting games, with everyone giving 100%. What more can you want?
Special mention this week to Aaron, who as the boys put it was "on
fire" in goal. Against Landore, he made save
after incredible save, getting more cheers and applause than even the goals we
scored, and was definitely the
reason the boys kept their unbeaten record so far in 8 games.

With enough players at the moment to field 2
squads on a Sunday, Dave decided to include new and old players
in each squad, hoping for a good mix of experience and skill, to give the boys a
good, solid start to the season.
No A or B team, both teams were Garden Village.
With 4 substitutes for each squad, some rotation was required to ensure that
everybody played at least 2 halves.
From the first kick-off, both Garden Village teams dived in with determination,
and with everyone playing their
part, Dave declared himself very pleased with the boys performance and a great
set of results.
The next few weeks could see some adjustment to the positions the boys play, as
Dave experiments to see where
each boy performs best to contribute to the team.

When looking at these statistics, please
remember that a team's performance is a result of the efforts of the whole
team.
It is easy to count goals scored. It is impossible to record saves, tackles,
runs and passes that are just as important to the team's results. It is also
impossible for any of these figures to reflect the high level of skill, effort,
commitment and enthusiasm
shown by all the boys week after week.
