GARDEN VILLAGE DO WELL AT
PONTARDAWE FOOTBALL FESTIVAL
24th May 2008

Garden Village finished first in their group at this festival. The group was one
of 3, and as we are not allowed to have semi-finals
or finals of any sort any more, we can only judge the boys performance on this
one group. Garden Village played some lovely
football, scoring 14 goals, and only conceding 2 all day. The boys didn't lose a
single match. Based on points, I think we finished
first between the 3 groups, but its hard to be 100% sure, as I was unable to watch
all the matches in the other 2 groups
For the full results see the Results Page.

At this festival, the team achieved their 100th clean sheet of the season. Well
done to Aled, our ever-reliable regular
goalkeeper, and, of course our stalwart defenders, who were Alex, Jack and Ben
Jones today.

Garden Village Under 8s celebrated another successful mini-football season
at the Garden Village
clubhouse, Stafford Common on 14th May. You can find more photos and details of
the Player of the
Year and Most-Improved Player awards on the Presentation
Page.
GARDEN VILLAGE DO WELL AT
BRITON FERRY FOOTBALL FESTIVAL
11th May 2008

These days, no-one is allowed to
win, but on a lovely sunny day, the 2 Garden Village teams played 8 games,
and didn't lose a single one. If it
was a tournament, which it wasn't, of course, we would have been in first and
second place. The boys in black &
white scored more points than anyone else, and the boys in yellow & blue
scored one less than that. So, it would
have been an all-Garden Village final.

As it was, there was no need for a final, so no need for the boys to play each
other, and both teams can therefore claim
that no-one beat them on the day! Between the two squads, the boys scored 17
goals, and only conceded 1 all day.

During the tournament, the team won their 100th game of the season.

During the tournament the boys scored their 350th goal of the season.

A typical team tactical talk, where the boys
tell us what they think they should do, and GVHQ, where we try to keep the boys
out of the sun
(or more usually, the rain), and where laces are tied, plasters applied, and
nothing but healthy food is eaten. Definitely no sweets, no sir!
(Yeah, right!)

The boys also played some great football, with some lovely saves, tackles,
passes, runs, crosses, and, of course, goals.
We had lovely weather, and played against some familiar teams, and some teams we
hadn't previously played this season.
All in all, a good day. For the full results, see the Results
Page

The Garden Village 2008 Fun Day was held at the Garden Village Club,
Stafford Common, on Sunday 4th May 2008

Garden Village fielded two squads for the day, the Juniors and the Colts.
A good performance from both squads saw them scoring 18 goals and conceding only
6.
Between them the boys played 12 matches against West End, Llangyfelach, Loughor,
Loughor Rovers,
Cwrt Herbert, Gowerton Juniors, Carmarthen Town and Landore.

Garden Village won 7 matches, drew 4 and lost only one. For the full results,
see the Results Page

COMPETITIVE
FOOTBALL TOURNAMENTS FOR UNDER 11s
The
Football Association of Wales (FAW) has recently decided to enforce a ban on
football clubs running,
or participating in, competitive mini-football tournaments for children under
11, ignoring the wishes of the
clubs, managers, coaches and parents of the players.
Whilst we support the idea of sport for all and encouraging as many
children as possible to play in friendly
league matches every week during the season, we see no reason to have clubs
prevented from organising
competitive tournaments after the season has finished. Well-attended tournaments
also raise much-needed funds
for many clubs, which helps to support grass-roots football.
Football IS competitive. Learning to win and lose is important for children’s
development. It is what encourages
them to improve. To have children not being allowed to win deprives them of a
reason for taking part in sport.
Children are naturally competitive, and are able to work out who has won by the
simple process of adding up how
many goals have been scored.
We
believe the FAW should reverse their decision to ban competitive mini-football
tournaments for under 11s,
and allow clubs who wish to, to organise tournaments where winning is
recognised.

The boys have played
21 more matches this season, and they have won 27 more matches, but only conceded 7 more
goals.
They have drawn the same number of matches, but they have only lost 12 matches, 6 less than this time last
season.
They have scored a massive 246 goals, 122 more goals than this time last
year ! Take a bow forwards and midfielders.
The teams have also achieved an amazing 58 clean sheets
this season, which shows what a great job the defenders and goalies are doing.
Well done so far. Keep it up boys!
The manager and
team would like to thank
CLAEMORE BUILDERS
for their sponsorship
for this season.
