Re written Boeing 737-400 ATP Check Ride

This package can be downloaded from flightsim com. Look in file library for ATP_Ride.zip

I have re-written the ATP check ride so that it (the sim/examiner) knows that the pilot is or is not flying the correct procedure in all phases of the check.

Included in this package are the following files.

- New Lesson file

- New Flt and Wx file

- Updated briefing / walkthrough

- Two jpg (pic) files. One showing the flight path on a successful check ride and the other shows a fail

check ride based on flying too far outbound during the procedure turn. *(Beware)

- A few new wav files

The same rules still apply as to tolerances (HDG, Alt, Airways and Airspeed tolerances all remain the same). However this time, when you complete the correct entry and hold procedure at CCC VOR  you will be cleared to LOKKS OM to begin the ILS App. This was and is very annoying to all simmers and real pilots that have tried their hand at this check ride only to have it end in the usual dribble from the "Voice" after passing CCC.

I have written a few adventures before (for FS98) but have been away for some time.  Oh and yes if you pass  the checkride you will be
presented with the certificate.

This as you probably know is totally slack on the part of the code writers and ultimately the people that were or are supposed to have given this sim check their final stamp of approval.  I cannot imagine a real pilot testing this check ride out for the makers of this product and actually passing it using correct instrument procedures especially when it comes to the hold(entry and pattern) as this is one of the main "bugs" or areas of contention in passing this ride but not the only one. Hmmm…maybe it’s intentional after all just to keep people talking about it as there were never updates by the “Team” to correct or address this and many other problems but it is still worth the 40 or so bucks for the sim.

The thing was designed to be as real as it gets..hmmm but side-stepping a VOR ,  I’d like to see a potential ATP’er trying to convince a check pilot of this procedure, oh well, at the very least they could have gotten all the ATC for the check ride correct but then again that was maybe asking for too much.

My real world experience was on turbojet aircraft, Boeing 707’s to be specific, and operated into and out of  many high density airports including Heathrow, JFK, Mia, Schiphol, CDG, Pearson and many others. I am no longer operating but enjoy flying the sim as much as any simmer out there so I had to add my 2 cents.

Features of the new ATC check ride are:

The "voice"  is mostly out of the cockpit but continues to give the main check instructions.- Turn, climb to, maintain etc.

- Corrected ATC read backs and instructions

- You have to cross over the VOR at CCC 117.20 or you will bust the check

- Your certificate will be given once you successfully accomplish the check.

- A brief or if you like a walkthrough on what’s expected and your route of flight in other words no surprises or ambush as how it should be as this check ride lacks the oral phase and others but that’s for way future versions of flight sim.

I suggest that you double check all of your course, heading altimeter and Altitude settings some of which are set for you during the flight but it remains your responsibility as pilot in command to ensure that your aircraft is properly configured for all phases of flight since there are no checklist being read , that would be a busted check right there.

Radio Aids used:

CCC VOR 117.20 – LOKKS (OM )NDB 366 -- ILS RWY 06 at ISLIP 108.30 OBS 059

If you can get your hands on an enroute chart for that area that would provide you with a lot more info as to radio aids etc and also give you a better picture of your route of flight.

TOLERANCES

Altitude: +/- 100 feet

Airspeed: +/- 10 KIAS

Heading: +/- 10 degrees

Suggested Speeds --   200 KTS on initial Phase C/M 2000, 5000ft

140 KTS during Turns at 5000ft and climb to 8000ft

245 kts to CCC VOR and slowing to 215 KTS approaching CCC VOR

                                    215 KTS Holding.

                                    200 KTS Descent

140 KTS Final approach speed (depending on landing weight etc) Bug +10

Brief / Walkthrough

Remember To Trim the Aircraft "Trim Is Your Friend" and SCAN, SCAN, SCAN

You begin on 4R at JFK and depart after being given takeoff clearance from the tower controller, straight-out departure to 2000ft. The engine failure drill starts shortly after liftoff. FLY THE AIRPLANE. Once you demonstrate your ability to maintain heading, altitude and airspeed on a single engine and during a turn the examiner will restore the engine for you and instruct you to climb to 5000ft on HDG 090. Next you will be instructed to set up your aircraft in a landing configuration for some low altitude maneuvers. First turn to left to HDG 315 at 5000ft and 140 KTS thence turn right to HDG 090 while maintaining 140KTS and 5000ft +/-100, then C/M (climb maintain) 8000ft in landing configuration, GEAR and Flaps down. Next Cleanup aircraft and resume normal cruise speed.

You will then be cleared direct to CCC VOR 117.20 to begin the hold phase, remember MAX SPEED IN HOLD IS 230 KTS. Entry is a teardrop (check pic below) path

Once established you will complete one racetrack or holding pattern then clearance will be issued to LOKKS NDB. Descend to 3000ft dir LOKKS. 4NM east of  LOKKS you will be cleared for the ILS approach.

Please note**** LOKKS OM is 21.5 DME from CCC VOR 117.20 so I would suggest that you keep CCC in NAV2 for your distance reference as the ILS at MacArthur has no DME.

Fly the Approach as depicted on the approach plate (enclosed) remember if you stray more than 10 nm you

will fail the check

Finally you complete the procedure turn inbound and intercept the ILS (LOC/GS), Stabilize your approach (speed, rate of descent on app to maintain glide path and correct tracking of the LOC. Run checklist if you like. Make sure you are setup to land. Speed, flaps, gear. GS intercept will be slightly before the OM at 1900ft.  You want to set down on the big stripes 1000ft marker, if you float the airplane and miss you will hear the dreaded voice “you missed the touch down zone”  as you touch down deploy your speedbrakes and thrust reversers and as your speed bleeds off you can apply brakes, cancel reverse at 80kts and STICK TO THE RUNWAY CENTER LINE.

That’s it, Happy Landings

All the best,

You can let me know how it turned out for you.
