DOOM:
The Gathering




These are all cards that I hand-made for a DOOM-themed Magic: The Gathering (MTG) deck roughly a decade ago. My younger brother, who was my primary MTG opponent, insisted on toning-down/modifying some of the cards because he thought they were too cheap/strong (and he was doubtlessly right, some of them are still overpowered). All of the normal "Hell" land cards in this deck supply red mana when tapped, but instead of the typical, curved, fireball symbol, the mana circles sport pentagrams instead--for gameplay purposes, they're treated as mountains (i.e., a card that would specifically target a mountain for destruction would also be applicable to my "Hell" land cards). Since I wasn't familiar with DOOM 2 or Final DOOM at the time I made these, almost all of the creatures/items/places are from DOOM 1 or DOOM 64. To conserve space, I cropped out everything on the cards but the artwork and typed up all the text. Where two, or more, flavor text quotes and images are presented for a single card, this is indicative of multiple versions of the same card. The card fronts are drawn on lined notebook paper, using ink and colored pencil. I used grocery bag paper for their blank, brown backings.

In retrospect, this deck really isn't all that great. I usually got wins with it by slowly picking away at my opponent's life points with the Shadow creatures, something they generally weren't prepared to deal with, at least initially (my brother started packing creature-killing spells and Shadow creatures of his own in his decks to put a swift end to that cheesy tactic). Without those Shadow critters, this deck doesn't fare very well at all, unless you get lucky, or your opponent's deck just sucks. I don't think I really understood what went into making a balanced deck back then--I was just having a fun time turning DOOM stuff into cards.

If anybody reading this wants to use any of the ideas presented here for their own home-made MTG decks, knock yourself out.

I made 20 of these, each with different art, but, as I've already got a ton of cards up as it is, I'm just going to give a sample of three of them here. Trust me, you're not missing much (lots of fire, bones, crusty old castles, that type of thing).
