Bestiary, Player Characters, and Maps

  • These sprites all come from Vic Tokai's 1995 Super Famicom port of the Princess Minerva roleplaying video game, which was never released commercially outside of Japan. The original version of Princess Minerva was created by RED Company and Riverhill Software and published on the Japanese PC-98 in 1992. A modified port of that title, with animated cut scenes and voice acting, was then crafted for the PC Engine CD in 1994, which is what the Super Famicom incarnation is based on. [Source 1]
  • [Source 2]

  • All of these sprites have been increased in size by 300%, for easier viewing. In other words, a sprite that was only 48 pixels tall in the game is 144 pixels tall on this web page.

  • While it might seem a little strange when they're pictured side-by-side, the rear angled sprites are actually supposed to be slightly larger/taller than the front angled ones, to give a sense of depth--the monsters with their backs to you are always on the bottom of the screen during a battle, and thus, closer and larger from the player's perspective.

  • I did all of the name translations from the original Japanese text. Where I felt it appropriate, I have left distinctly Japanese concepts/entities in their native forms (i.e., rather than giving literal translations of "female ninja" for the title of "kunoichi" or "thunder god" for "raiden", I left them as-is.) Multiple phonetic interpretations of katakana characters are always a possibility as well [i.e., my translation of the "Leaper" part of the Water Leaper enemy's name ("Ri-pa-" in katakana) could just as easily be understood as "Reaper" instead--in fact, that was my initial impression, but, upon further contemplation, Leaper seemed more appropriate for a manta ray type creature to me, so I chose that.] As I am not fluent in the Japanese language by any stretch of the imagination, some errors are likely, which I apologize for in advance.

    Missing Monsters?
I found the creatures listed below on a Super Famicom Princess Minerva sprite sheet that someone else made, but I never encountered them myself, even though I played through the entire game. I don't know their actual names, but, for the sake of consistency, I've given them appropriate titles and translations. The most likely scenario is that I simply missed them (it certainly wouldn't be the first time that's happened to me whilst playing a RPG). The other two possibilities I can think of are (1) that the sprites were coded into the game, but, for whatever reason, weren't actually used for gameplay and the maker of the sprite sheet hacked them from the ROM or (2) they're actually from either the PC-98 or PC Engine CD versions of Princess Minerva and somehow got mixed in with the SNES sprites (I noticed that said sprite sheet includes the Sphinx battle sprites from the PC Engine CD incarnation of the game, which aren't used in the SNES version).

If anyone reading this has encountered these creatures in the SNES version of Princess Minerva, I would appreciate it if you would send me an e-mail telling me where you found them so that I can verify their existence (please be as specific as possible about the location.)
