Robert Arch wins back-to-back races, Brame claims championship

Robert Arch claimed the pole and the win in the season-ending Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash race at Dillon Motor Speedway on Sept. 22. The 2010 series champion missed most of the last two seasons, but came back with a vengeance, winning the final two Clash races of 2012 in dramatic fashion.

The series' tight points battle came down to an nail-biting final few laps. In the end, Gibsonville, N.C.'s Keith Brame Jr. became the series' first two-time champion, besting Raleigh's Chris Gault by a mere one point.

Brame nursed a steaming car to a second place finish in the race, just enough to claim the title.

Gault, who led the standings by 9 points heading into the championship race finished the event in fourth place.

The 25-lap feature was slowed by two caution periods and featured plenty of contact and exchanged paint. Arch, of Raleigh, stormed out to an early lead but was soon challenged by Dillon, S.C., driver Kayla Dean. Dean and Arch made contact on lap four, allowing Brame to take the lead.

Brame led the next dozen or so laps, until a late caution flew for the slowing Chevrolet of Mark Dean.

On the ensuing restart, contact between Kayla Dean and Gault led to Gault's Nissan spinning in turn one. The race restarted again with nine laps to go.

Arch re-claimed the lead from Brame's overheating Honda and went on to victory. Gault, meanwhile, stormed from the rear of the field to Dean's back bumper, but was unable to make the pass for third on the final lap.

Arch performed his trademark victory burnout on Dillon's front stretch, much to the delight of the fans who stayed on hand to watch the evening's most exciting feature. With Arch's victory, he tied Brame for the series' win total, both with two a piece. The highly-competitive season featured seven different winners.

Gault, in his first year of competing on the tour, claimed the Piedmont Racing Expo Rookie of the Year award. Gault won his first Clash event at the historic Rockingham Speedway and put together an impressive season.

2012 winners were: Todd Langdon, Barry Wilson, Mark Dean, Chris Gault, Keith Brame Jr., Chad Wall and Robert Arch.

Robert Arch wins in return to UCARS

Robert Arch, the 2010 UCAR Clash champion, hadn't sat foot in a UCAR since his championship season. Last Friday, Arch looked as if he never left.

The current late model driver rolled to victory at the UCAR Clash for Cash 50 lap event at Wake County Speedway, besting track champion Chad Wall in a heated battle that turned physical.

The two drivers each won a heat race and qualified on the front row for the feature. Wall, who had won every UCAR race of the season at the 50-year-old bullring, pulled out to an early lead. However, after a caution for a spinning car, Arch took advantage of a restart, moving Wall from his lead position. Wall was able to charge back up to second place, but ran out of time. Arch's Acura stormed to victory in the race, which had been delayed by rain for two consecutive weeks.

Chris Gault, who came into the race second in points, made up ground on season-long leader Keith Brame Jr. Gault finished third at his home track while Brame, who raced a heat race the week before, was unable to return to the track the next week after the rainout.

The two head into the final race of the season at Dillon in a close points battle, which could come down to a single position on the final lap. Both drivers have won this season, meaning anything could happen going into the season's final race!

Remarks from Larry Walls regarding Ace disqualifications.

Keith Brame Jr. wins at Ace, secures points lead

Keith Brame Jr. took his second victory of the season at his home track of ACE Speedway on a special Tuesday night July 4 spectacular.

The win allowed Brame to extend his slim points lead over Raleigh driver Chris Gault.

Brame won the race in the tech area following the disqualification of two series regulars, Barry Wilson and Michael Neal. Series technical inspector Jessie Richardson Jr. said both the first and second place finishers had unapproved springs on their cars.

Brame moved from his fifth-place starting position to an early second place spot on the race track before settling into third when the checkered flag flew. The #1 team picked up $300 for the winning effort.

Ben Walker, who is tied for Brame five with regular-season wins in Ace Speedway's UCAR division, advanced to second after the disqualifications. Gault was third, Roger Brannon fourth and Tim Brown rounded out the top five finishers.

Chad Wall wins Wake County

Chad Wall dominated the first Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash event of the season at Wake County, making it six different winners so far in 2012. Wall, no relation to series founder Larry Walls, cruised from his pole starting spot to an easy win in a race marred by crashes, spinouts and a fire that ended the race two laps prematurely.

Wall qualified nearly a second faster than the entire field, setting a blistering lap of 14.54 around the .25 mile bullring. Chris Gault, who was second in points going into the night's event, qualified second and held his own throughout the race, finishing right behind Wall.

However, behind them, things got a little wild. Around lap 30 points leader and defending race winner Keith Brame Jr. would get involved in an incident with a lapped car while running in the top five, ending his night early and creating serious championship implications.

After the restart, Wake County Speedway UCAR champion Kristin Gault charged through the field all the way to third place, but blew her engine with only two laps remaining. Her car erupted into a fireball, causing chaos behind her as the third through sixth place cars would all be collected in the ensuing wreck. Fortunately for Wall, he was long gone and easily collected his first Clash feature win.

Keith Brame Jr. back in the winner's circle

When you look at the Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash history books, one name rises to the top of the list - Keith Brame Jr. The 2009 champion is the series' first repeat winner, all-time wins leader, and has won on all three types of tracks the series has raced - oval, dirt and road course.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Jason Beck Racing, one of the founding UCAR Clash teams that had never seen victory lane in the touring division. Now, the two have joined to create a winning combination.

After several near misses and letdowns this year, Brame captured the first UCAR Clash win of his career driving a car owned by someone other than himself. Brame dominated the series' fifth race of the year, qualifying on the pole and leading 24 laps of the 25-lap main event at Dillon Motor Speedway.

The win pushes the Gibsonville, N.C. native further ahead in the points battle, extending his attempt at becoming the series' first repeat champion.

Not bad for a driver who hadn't run the UCAR Clash in more than two years and had no plans of racing cars this season.

"I came down to the New Years Day race and didn't even have a car with me, I was just helping a friend," Brame said Saturday night in victory lane, hoisting the winner's trophy. "Jason saw me and asked if I wanted to drive his car. He liked what he saw, so we decided to keep racing."

Brame has qualified on the pole for three of the series' five races this year and has posted four top fives. However, Raleigh's Chris Gault has kept the points battle tight, winning the inaugural race at Rockingham Motor Speedway and finishing 2nd to Brame Saturday night at Dillon. The race at Dillon may have been one of the strongest runs of Gault's young career. He'll be a force to be reckoned with as the series heads into his home track of Wake County Speedway in May.

Dillon natives Josh and Mark Dean finished third and fourth at their home track, waging an epic battle for position throughout the race. Andy Norris rounded out the top-five finishers.

Chris Gault wins Rockingham

For the third race this season, the Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash has a first-time winner. Chris Gault, who has ran every race this season the entire 2012 season so far took the win at the inaugural UCAR event at Rockingham Motor Speedway.

Gault, who also won a his heat race, started on the pole and led wire to wire in the 25 lap feature.

Ben Walker, who hasn't finished out of the top five this season, finished second. Jessie Duke was third.

Keith Brame, the series' points leader, was leading the heat race when mechanical trouble ended his day early.

The UCAR Clash will visit Dillon Motor Speedway for the fourth race of the season on April 28.

Dean takes Clash dirt win

The second points race of the 2012 Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash season is in the books and once again a first-time Clash winner found himself in victory lane.

Marty Dean made the long trip from Dillon, S.C., to County Line Raceway just outside of Wilson, N.C., for the only dirt race of the 2012 season. Dean, a dirt regular, easily rolled to victory in the 25-lap feature.

Keith Brame Jr. of Gibsonville, N.C., would qualify on the pole for the second week in a row, this week by winning a qualifying heat race. In the feature, Ben Walker would storm to an early lead from his front-row starting spot. Dean, who started third, would take the lead on lap 3.

From there, Dean would roll out to a straightaway lead. Walker would fade with mechanical issues, setting the stage for a big battle for second between Brame and Barry Wilson, who won at Ace. Ultimately, Brame would prevail, with Wilson finishing third.

Chris Gault, an asphalt driver making his dirt debut would finish fourth, while Walker would fall to fifth.

Wilson claims first clash win at Ace

Barry Wilson has dominated Ace Speedway over the last year's time, winning last year's track championship. He continued his dominance on March 10, claiming his first Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash win at the historic .4 mile track in Alamance County, N.C.

The race featured the hard fought racing Ace is known for, with plenty of side-by-side racing for the lead and three-wide racing throughout the 50 lap feature.

Wilson didn't take his win without a fight from the other Clash competitors. 2009 UCAR Clash Champ Keith Brame Jr. of nearby Gibsonville took the pole with a 19.17 lap, and started in 7th place after an invert. That left Chris Gault and 2011 Wake County Speedway champion Jessie Duke on the front row for the feature. When the green flag flew, Wilson missed a shift, bunching up the field. Wilson would make contact with Brame, sending him spinning and to the rear of the field for a complete race restart.

Sam Pacitti, of Angier, N.C., took an early lead in the race, and would swap the lead with Wilson and a hard charging Michael Neal throughout the race's opening laps. Trouble for Brame would continue, with his car's engine stalling, causing a second caution.

The UCAR Clash adopted Ace Speedway's famous "Choose cone" rule for restarts, allowing cars deep in the field to choose to move to the outside lane for the restart. This created exciting three-wide racing and competitiveness all day.

Brame took advantage of the cone restarts, and worked his way back into the top 5. The caution would soon fly again, as contact between Chris Gault and Jeff Thomas would make contact, sending Thomas hard into the turn 2 wall.

Wilson would muscle his way into the lead for good, and pull out to a healthy lead as Pacitti, Neal and Brame would fight tooth and nail for second.

The caution would fly again, as Gault broke a suspension part and ended up in the wall, ending his race, setting up a final restart.

Brame would pass Pacitti for second, only to loose the position the next lap. Neal was fading with mechanical trouble and dropped to fourth. On the last lap, Brame would move around Pacitti in turn four, bringing Neal with him for a podium finish. Pacitti would finish fourth and Ben Walker would round out the top five.

Once again, as is the case in nearly every Clash race, 3/4 of the field finished on the lead lap. Though the field of 12 cars was less than the 27 at Dillon in January, the race was one of the more competitive in recent memory.

Langdon wins in epic race for UCAR Clash

Larry Walls is no stranger to big races, but the New Years Day UCAR Clash Race may have been his biggest, most-important event yet.

By all accounts, he passed the test. With a huge field of 27 of the best stock four cylinder cars to ever run on an oval, the $500 to win January showdown was a battle for the ages.

Todd Langdon cruised to victory for his second win in as many races, fighting from a third row starting spot to take the lead after a late caution. It's Langdon's third Clash win.

Jimmy Waller, Sammy Pacitti, Keith Brame Jr., Jonathan Belfore and Barry Wilson rounded out the top-six finishers.

Micheal Neal set fast time for the race with an unofficial track-record 19.60 qualifying time, but was forced to start 7th due to an invert for the feature event. That gave Brame Jr., the 2009 UCAR Clash champion, the top starting spot in his first race back to the series in two years.

Once the green flag flew, Brame took an early lead in his borrowed car, but couldn't hold off Waller or Neal, who eventually passed both Brame and Waller for the lead.

All that would change on lap 23 when Dillon regular Kayla Dean made contact with the turn-4 wall, then across the track into the leader Neal. Dean was transported to the hospital for minor injuries, and the race was delayed by both a crash and rain for more than 10 minutes.

That set up a 5-lap shootout for the finish, with Langdon driving off into the sunset to continue his win-streak.

It's a new season for the Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash and Larry Walls has something to say,

"We're back!"

After a season of low car counts, controversy and the struggle to survive an economic downturn, the series known in 2009 as the fastest growing touring series in America has returned to its former glory. No where is that more evident than at Dillon, where a tradition is being built when all other regional tracks are taking a break for winter.

"This race is important to us, we are trying to build on it and make it bigger every year," Walls said. "Next year it will be a points race."

It wasn't just the number of cars, but the quality of the field that stood out on New Years day. It was a champion's field with Ace Speedway champion Barry Wilson, Ace runner-up Michael Neal, Coastal Plains Raceway champ Jonathan Belfore, Wake County Speedway stock-4 champ Jessie Duke, UCAR Clash champ Brame Jr. and the 1st and 2nd place cars from Orange County Speedway.

The event was only a handful of cars short of the all-time record car count set at Wake County speedway in 2008. Walls hopes this will prompt more drivers to race the Clash in 2012, and put the UCAR touring series back on the map

Stay tuned for full results from Dillon soon.

Congrats to this year's big winners: Duane Walker the 2011 Champion and Todd Langdon, the 2011 Rookie of the Year!

A special message from series director Larry Walls:

I have been told that I alone have destroyed UCAR racing. When you look at the total picture I am the only one that has keep our cars stock as they can be. As with everything else in motor sports the drivers and team owners have pushed the tracks as well as the UCAR Clash to allow them to cut springs add after market wheels and work done to motors to make them faster.

When I started the UCAR Clash I did so to keep the cost down to my racers and to help bring new drivers into the sport. That is all out the window now when we started four years ago the average car cost was $600-$1200 now I have some cars that cost right at $5000 to build.

I know that I have made mistakes in running the UCAR Clash I am not perfect at all. I have invested 4 years of my life and my own money into giving you guys a place to race 10-12 times a year.

Now the bottom line for me is ether to stop the loss of money or try to stay afloat and finish the last 3 races of the 2011 season. I can't do this without you the drivers and team owners. My staff and I are looking at opening up our rules to allow more cars to race with us. I now need feed back from all UCAR drivers to help bring the UCAR Clash back. I know with the economy in such a down turn and car and fan counts down everywhere it will be hard for you to travel but again I need your help not your bashing. Bashing is killing our home tracks and the UCAR Clash everyday now.

For Hickory I am opening a pre-registration form on the Walls Roofing UCAR Clash web site I need all drivers that are going to race at Hickory to register for this great race. At this point and time we are going to open up the spring rule to cut springs and lowering the ride height down as well.

I would like to thank all of the past, currant teams and sponsors for all of your support without you I could not have made it this far.

Thanks for your time

Larry P. Walls

Duane Walker wins first Clash race

Duane Walker has ran great all season. He'd claimed a regular weekly racing victory at Dillon Motor Speedway earlier this year, but had yet to win a Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash points race. All that changed Saturday Night at Dillon.

Walker led all 20 laps in the feature in route to his first career touring series win. Walker held off a hard charging Bill Pearce, who won the night's earlier heat race, to win the $300 check at the end of the night.

Jason Beck finished 3rd and Jessie Hatcher finished fourth.

Stay tuned for more news from the UCAR Clash for Cash series!

"Wild Bill" Pearce wins with last lap pass

Matt Grimes dominated the race, but Bill Pearce took home the hardware. That was the story during the Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash's fist trip to Wake County Speedway this year.

Grimes' Piping Performance Nissan 200 SX led 49 laps of the 50 lap feature, steadily pacing the field for the entire event. However, former super late model driver Pearce made a daring last lap pass to take the lead and a $500 first prize courtesy of Dunn Benson Ford.

For Pearce, it was his second straight win on the Clash Series. His Honda Prelude came all the way from the rear in the most recent race, proving its muscle.

Eric Winslow, who won the inaugural UCAR Clash race at Wake County Speedway in 2007, placed 3rd in his Honda Prelude. Duane Walker and Chris Gault rounded out the top five.

Full results and race rundown will be posted soon.

From Walls Roofing UCAR Clash

North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway has announced that a “business restructure” is underway at the 5/8-mile paved oval, placing all 2011 scheduled events in a “tentative” position. The June 18th and OCT 29th Walls Roofing UCAR Clash races at North Wilkesboro will be listed as “tentative” until this process has been completed. Track principals have indicated that final decisions regarding future potential re-opening of the facility should be made by June 15, at which time the Walls Roofing UCAR Clash will reflect the situation regarding the June 18th events. In the interim, all questions regarding the future of North Wilkesboro Speedway may be directed to the Speedway offices at (336) 651-0018.

"Wild Bill" Pearce wins at Dillon

"Wild Bill" Pearce won his first ever UCAR Clash feature at Dillon Motor Speedway, holding off Duane Walker and Min Stock specialist Chad Wall in a caution free race that had been shortened to 25 laps.

Peirce piloted his #51 Honda Prelude to an earlier heat race win, making him undefeated on the night. Walker put up a charge, but had to settle for second after his car developed a miss that couldn't be remedied at the race track.

Wall was piloting the car that Chris Lowell won the previous UCAR Clash race at VIR, but the car didn't seem to have the handle at the tricky 4/10 mile Dillon.

Check back soon for a full rundown. >

Smith, Lowell win at VIR

The #23 Acura Integra, owned by Wil Smith, won both the Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash and the UCAR Clash Open race at Virginia International Raceway Saturday. Chris Lowell, making his first UCAR Clash start, won both his heat race and feature event. Smith, driving the same car, won the open modified race.

In the UCAR Clash feature, Aaron Miller crossed the finish line first, but was disqualified after refusing the second place driver's claim. The UCAR Clash has a claim and exchange rule allowing a driver to claim the car that finishes directly in front of them for $1,500. Anyone refusing the claim will be disqualified. The rule is designed to keep the cost of racing at a manageable level.

In the UCAR Clash feature, Michael Neal finished second, Rick Watson third, Eric Winslow fourth and Todd Langdon in fifth.

Even with gas prices approaching $4 a gallon, 16 cars showed up for the third running of the Clash at VIR. Though the turnout was lower than previous years, series director Larry Walls thanked the drivers who came from more than three states to run the race.

"This is a good turnout," Walls said during the drivers' meeting. "We will be back next year."

The race was surprisingly clean, with few incidents other than some minor excursions through the grass and a couple of single-car spins on the winding road course.

The final finishing order was:

Wayne Herrington takes historic win at Wilkesboro, Arch clinches championship!

Wayne Herrington won the first ever Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway. After qualifying with an average speed of more than 90 mph, a UCAR series record, Herrington dominated a fast paced event on the historic speedway- delayed by only one caution flag.

Herrington faught early with Travis Miller, who claimed an early lead, but later fell back to second, as the #9 Honda was too strong at the end.

“I won a championship at Concord last year. This tops anything that I've ever done," Herrington said in victory lane. "If I don't ever race again, this is at the top of the list and always will be.”

Herrington almost didn't even make the race. Driving a car normally raced by his brother, Herrington installed the motor in his Prelude the night before the race.

Miller, who crossed the line second, gave up his finishing position after refusing a claim from third place finisher Wil Smith. The UCAR Clash series mandates a $1,500 claim on all cars, to keep the cost of race cars affordable.

That moved Smith up to second place. Robert Arch cruised home to a third place finish, unofficially clinching the 2010 UCAR Clash points championship.

Dillon winner Kevin Herndon finished fourth. Herrington kept Herndon from sweeping the three races in the UCAR Clash triple crown.

The official rundown for Sunday's race will be posted later this week.

Kevin Herndon wins Dillon

Kevin Herndon led the 50 lap UCAR Clash race wire to wire... he won by about a half straightaway... Tracy Mullis was second, Jeremy Rowe third, Robert Arch fourth, Matt Grimes fifth, Sam Pacitti sixth, Shane Phillips seventh, Todd Langdon eighth, Barry Wilson 9th and Dennis West was 10th, last car on the lead lap... These results are unofficial pending tech. Thanks to Ron Barfield for a wonderful night and 2010 racing season at the beautiful Dillon Motor Speedway!!!

Spectacular race at Dillon leaves everyone standing

23-cars took the green flag at Dillon Motor Speedway in what may be one of the most hotly contested Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash Race in series history.

Nearly every car in the field was a race winner, and at least eight were former track champions at various tracks around the region.

In the end, it was Matt Grimes picking up his first Clash race of his career, holding off a vicious charge from behind.

photo by: Shell Sparrow/Catch the draft

The race would see multiple cautions, all with points implications. Both 2nd place points driver Shane Phillips and fifth place points driver Alex Fleming would have to start at the rear of the field due to their top-two finishing positions at the last Clash race, making for a tough night for the drivers. Phillips was involved in a lap 41 crash with Hickory winner Todd Langdon and Bobby Dale Earnhardt, grandson of racing legend Dale Earnhardt.

Fleming, who spun once early in the race, was tagged again on the last lap, sparking a multi-car crash that destroyed the cars of Fleming, Barry Wilson and Brad House.

Points leader Robert Arch couldn't even escape the race's carnage. After being involved in an early crash, Arch managed to somehow work his way back through the field for a third place finish.

Despite all the cautions, the racing for the top spot was furious throughout the night. Herndon gave up the lead late to Grimes and eventually dropped out of contention. Before the crash, Fleming had made it up to second place, with both he and Dean pressuring Grimes on numerous restarts. In the end, Grimes was victorious for the first time in UCAR's biggest series.

"It feels good," Grimes said in victory lane. "I didn't think I had the car to beat. I took the lead with 17-to-go and I just held them off from there."

Grimes is one of the UCAR Clash's original drivers, and with finishes as high as second place, the 2010 Wake County Speedway track champion was a lock to win a Clash race soon.

After his contact with Fleming, Dean was disqualified from his top-five finish. That put Wil Smith, Robert Arch, Mark Dean and Todd Langdon as the unofficial top-five.

Langdon wins Hickory, Herndon DQed.

When Todd Langdon of Garner NC unloaded his car on Saturday at Hickory Motor Speedway, he knew he didn't have a chance of winning. His car was junk. He was one of the slowest cars in practice, first breaking a throttle cable and then, blowing an oxygen sensor out of his fickle Honda Prelude's exhaust system.

He was one of the slowest cars in his heat race, finishing at the very tail end of the field.

So how did Todd Langdon drive the Richard Aliff Motorsports #6 machine to a victory in the first annual Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash race at Hickory?

"After about 10 laps, I finally figured out how to drive it," Langdon said of the tricky egg shaped track in the foothills of North Carolina. "You've got to go in the corner high and roll through the middle."

Langdon took that line all the way to a $777 paycheck, besting points leader Robert Arch by about half a straightaway.

The race was not without controversy. Kevin Herndon, last race's winner and dominant at Hickory was disqualified after he ran afoul of inspectors in post race inspection. Herndon dominated the race and crossed the finish line first, but saw his win stripped away for a camber infraction on the rear suspension.

Langdon's win keeps alive a streak of no-repeat winners this season, something that speaks well for the parity in the series made up of many different makes and models. Langdon's car is the first ever carbureted car to win a UCAR Clash race.

Points leader Robert Arch finished second, extending his points lead slightly over Shane Phillips, who came home third.

Herndon Wins Clash at Wake

Kevin Herndon and car owner Deac McCaskill have Wake County Speedway down to a science. In the last three Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash races at the .23 mile facility, Herndon has led every lap but one. Count them- that's 144 laps total.

Herndon put on a display of utter domination Friday night, cruising to victory in the latest UCAR battle at the bullring.

Herndon's only challanges came from fighting through lapped traffic and a late race charge by current Wake County points leader Matt Grimes in his #87 Nissan.

However, at the end of the day, it was the Eclipse of Herdon who took the checkered flag and the $500 top prize at Wake.

The only drama of the night came after the race was finished. Sammy Pacitti of Angier intentionally spun the 44 Honda of Jeremy Rowe and was subsequently disqualified from his fifth place effort.

Clash points leader Robert Arch managed to post a fourth place finish in what was the first Clash race of the season at his home track. Arch leads Shane Phillips, who had a disappointing night and Rowe in the standings.

Series Defined by Races at Wake

As the Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash heads into its home track of Wake County Speedway, expectations are high. The race could set the tone for the rest of the season.

Since the series inception, Wake County has defined the Clash. The Clash's first race was held at the track in 2007, setting the tone for high-paying 50 lap UCAR events. In 2008, more than 30 cars showed up for the season ending race at the Raleigh quarter-mile.

Since then, car counts have been nothing short of impressive. Now, coming off a somewhat disappointing car-count at Corbin Kentucky, Series owner Larry Walls believes a race at Wake County Speedway is just what the doctor ordered.

"Wake County is my home track and where I started racing my first ever stock cars. My dad took me in 1962 to the first race ever held there," Walls said. "I think it's really important. I think our car count we have here will be an indication of what we will get the rest of the season.

"I've got 10 or 15 cars that are everywhere I go this year, and Corbin was an exception for me, but I think I'll have 10 or 15 cars that consitantly race with me," he said. "We could have 25-30 cars this year at this race. Wake County has always been one of my biggest draws."

Maybe the reason for that is the success different cars have seen at the tight bullring. In more than five races, there hasn't been a repeat winner in Clash competition at the speedway. Last year's summer race saw a last lap crash lead to the top two drivers being disqualified. Rob Ward won the race.

"I honestly don't think we've had a repeat winner and I think we could have a new winner this time," Walls said. "Matt Grimes is on the ball and has his car right. Dennis West is coming with his new hot rod. He could very well win the race. My race is a points race for Wake County also, to help with the car count. We will have a lot of good machines there."

The Clash points race is tight, with the top four all within 100 points of eachother. Points leader Robert Arch has looked strong this season, but there are others who could play the spoiler, Walls said.

"Right now I think the points are going to be down to the 4 of Robert Arch and the 91 of Shane Phillips," Walls said. "I do believe Shane Phillips is giong to get him a win this season."

Walls said there is a reason the June 25 race will be thrilling for the fans.

"At the end of a 100-lap race, much less a 50-lap race, we have half the field on the same straightaway"

Leading all the way in both 50-lap segments, Keith Watson of Salt Rock, W.Va. won the Wildcat National 100 for the Walls Roofing UCAR Clash Series at Corbin Speedway on Saturday evening, June 5. Watson was one of a few UCAR competitors who had some experience at Corbin, competing in a regular WKFC-FM Modified Mini Series event last season. Throughout the first 50, Watson and his Keith Watson Auto Body Cavalier No. 51 were challenged by Rick Watson of Branchland, W.Va. and the Peyton Branch Auto Parts Sunfire No. 50. In the second 50, he got some breathing space as a battle for second place raged between Rick Watson, Robert Arch of Raleigh, N.C., and Shane Phillips, also of Raleigh. Arch won that competition and finished second, bringing his All On The Line Honda Specialists Prelude No. 4 under the checkered flag 2.5 seconds behind Keith Watson Phillips and his Brute Power Automotive Integra No. 91 were right behind Arch to take third. After Rick Watson fell out in the final couple of laps, Joseph Knuckles of Keavy, Ky. took over fourth place and finished there in the T&H Towing Escort No. 20, followed by Jeremy Rowe of Thomasville, N.C. and the McCrary Metal Works Prelude No. 44. Placing sixth through tenth were Greg Napier of Hamilin, W.Va. and the Keith Watson Auto Body Cavalier No. 21, Rick Watson on the basis of laps completed, Bradley Abner of Heidrick, Ky. in the Abner's Boat Bottom Repair Paseo No. 71, Charles Robinson of London, Ky. driving the Davis Salvage & Auto Parts Jetta No. 3x, and Michael Neal of Burlington, N.C. in the Greensboro Plumbing Supply Prelude No. 11. Rounding out the finishing order, based on the number of laps completed, were Joe Workman of Culloden, W.Va. and the Danny's Frame & Auto Body Laser No. 9, Tony Lambert of Williamsburg, Ky. driving the Lambert Racing Neon No. 8, and Michael Hale of Corbin at the wheel of the M.H. Auto Repair Sentra No. 72. Eddie Workman of Milton, W.Va. and his Workman Racing Laser No. 91e were unable to start the feature because of mechanical problems. Keith Watson was the winner of the first heat, and Neal took the second.

Robert Arch hung on to his points lead heading into his home track of Wake County Speedway later this month.

Teammates Robert Arch and Alex Fleming came to Dillon Motor Speedway together in the same hauler. However, they took two completely different routes to the front of the field during the 50 lap feature event.

Fleming won the Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash series' first of two trips to Dillon this season from the pole. If the race would have been about a lap longer, he probably wouldn't have been holding the trophy.

Fleming won the first of two heat races and had nothing but clean air and open track all night.

Arch, winner of the last race at Virginia International Raceway, was forced to start at the rear of the 22-car field per Clash rules. That set Arch on a 50-lap scramble through the field to prove he had the fastest car on the speedway.

Michael Neal, who was third in points going into Dillon thanks to his third place finish at VIR was also forced to start at the rear, even after winning the evenings' second heat race.

Neal didn't fare nearly as well as Arch, driving up into the top five only to return to the rear thanks to a single-car spin. At the end of the day, 7th place was all Neal could muster.

The outcome of the race nearly changed around half-way when a restart incident nearly claimed the leader's car. Second place driver Wayne Penny made contact with Fleming while the field was still under caution and ended with Fleming in the inside retaining wall with significant damage to his left front.

Clash officials re-instated Fleming as the leader and sent Penny to the rear, giving fans yet another driver to watch working through the field.

Arch quickly moved through the field, but several late race cautions stalled his efforts. Arch was attempting to pass Fleming with two laps to go, but a final caution set up a green, white, checkered finish.

The win was the first UCAR Clash victory for Fleming, who is a standout on the PASS super late model tour. Clash regular Jeremy Rowe was third, Shane Phillips fourth and Barry Wilson fifth.

Flemming said his history racing super late model cars at Dillon didn't transfer well over to the four-cylinder UCARS, but did help him on the track.

"I'm more comfortable with the track," Fleming said. "I've made laps here faster than this, so I feel like I can run anywhere on the track and not crash."

Fleming's win in a Pontiac Sunfire was also a show of the parity in the Clash series. A car with an SOHC 8-valve engine won the race, a DOHC 16-valve car finished second and a 12-valve SOHC finished third, with none of the cars having a significant advantage.

UCAR Clash's Second Trip to VIR Key to Series Future

By Jason Beck

The Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash for Cash series heads to VIR this weekend for the second time, yet another success for the constantly growing series.

More than 40 cars have registered for the event, which will pit some of the most seasoned racing veterans in the area against relative newcomers in strictly stock cars on one of the toughest road courses in America.

Series director Larry Walls says going back to VIR is huge.

"Going to race at VIR was the biggest day ever for the Walls Roofing UCAR Clash," Walls said. "In today's racing drivers and team owners are looking to travel and race on tracks that they have never been on. VIR is something drivers love to do. I guess it all starts from racing at your local Fun center and driving the road course there."

However, there is a big difference between area karting tracks and the 1.62 mile road course at VIR. Walls is confident his drivers can handle the added challenge of professional road racing, especially after the way the racers handled their first trip to VIR last year.

"In the very first practice they were fast and just got better with every lap that they ran," Walls said. "If all the cars show up, it will be a great race for the fans.

"This is something that I love about what I am doing giving drivers a chance to race on the best road courses, dirt and asphalt tracks out there. It will only make you a better driver as you go forward in your racing career."

With multiple media outlets covering the event and the rumor of a NASCAR Sprint Cup regular filling the seat of a Clash regular's car for the VIR event, Walls believes Sunday could be the day that puts his series in the national spotlight.

"This weekend will be covered by the Weekend Warriors TV show, YouTube and the BurningRubberRadio.com show," he said. "With this much media coverage, I would say it will give the Walls' Roofing UCAR Clash a lot of National attention."

We are less than away from the Walls Roofing UCAR Clash VIR experience. The race will be covered by the weekendwarriorstv.com show and the BurningRubberRadio.com radio show. More info to follow soon on this great weekend of racing. Go to www.ucarclash.com for all of your UCAR Clash news and race dates.

Walls Roofing UCAR Clash makes history, visits North Wilkesboro

I’ve never been distracted while driving a racecar. Usually I’m so focused on the task at hand, that I never notice anything beyond the fences. However, making my first laps at North Wilkesboro was different. I couldn’t help but look around and take in the history.

I participated in a practice session as a driver in the Walls’ Roofing UCAR Clash for Cash Series at North Wilkesboro, as part of the track’s attempt to get back to competitive racing after more than a decade.

The UCARs, front-wheel drive, four cylinder stock cars have never raced on an oval track quite as big as the 5/8 mile Wilkesboro, so a test session was scheduled to see how the cars handled the increased speed.

UCAR Clash Regulars Mike Chapman, Robert Arch, Randy Prillamen, Barry Wilson, Mike Strickland, Jim Bounds, Jason Miller, David Wiggins and myself all took laps on the historic track.

As I pulled out onto the track for the first time, I should have been paying attention to how my car ran, my line around the racetrack and how many RPMs I was turning down the straightaway. However, I found myself looking at the Junior Johnson grandstand on the backstretch and the old wooden fence that was built in the 1940’s, before NASCAR existed.

As I drove through turns one and two, I couldn’t help but remember the race Ricky Rudd and Dale Earnhardt ended a yearlong feud against the very same wall I was flirting with every lap.

Of course it wasn’t hard to notice the uphill backstretch and the downhill front stretch, something unique from any other track from the NASCAR schedule.

Larry Walls, who heads up the UCAR series, said the historic nature of the track is what drove him to seek a date for his drivers here.

“It was a great day for the UCARs at North Wilkesboro,” Walls said. “All this history. I can’t wait until all of my drivers get to come up here and race in October.”

Yes, the UCARs were fast, but not dangerously fast. Larry told me my average lap speeds were around 85 mph, and he said the other cars were roughly the same. Someone with a radar gun at the track clocked some of the drivers running 90 mph at the end of the backstretch, something all of the drivers seemed to manage well.

Another reason for the test was to get a grasp on how the cars’ tires would handle the abrasive ancient surface at Wilkesboro.

The track was bumpy and slick, but not much worse than other UCAR Clash venues like Wake County, East Carolina and Hickory, which all have older pavement that make the tracks more challenging.

That being said, the speeds were considerably faster at Wilkesboro and the abrasive surface did take its toll on some of the drivers who missed the proper setup. One driver, who ran too little air pressure, blistered his right front tire in a handful of laps. More air solved the wear problem.

However, I personally experienced the worst problem of the day — a blown tire that may have cost me a racecar.

The combination of scuffed tires, inadequate air pressure and too little negative camber caused the right front tire on my car to blow exiting turn four, causing me to hit the wall at about 70 mph.

Of course the safety equipment mandated by the UCAR clash kept me safe, even if my car was thoroughly trashed.

There is a silver lining to the story. On my way home from a morning at one of NASCAR’s original tracks, I realized that I’m probably the first person to hit the wall at Wilkesboro since 1996, and the first to christen the wall since the track’s revival. I guess that officially makes me a part of North Wilkesboro history!

North Wilkesboro date set for October 31!

The 2010 season schedule for the Walls Roofing UCAR Clash took a historical step forward today as the series announced that they will hold a 40-lap event at the venerable North Wilkesboro Speedway.

Closed in 1996, North Wilkesboro was a charter track of NASCAR and was closely tied to the origins of modern-day stock car racing with many of the sport's most revered names finding success at the 5/8th mile oval. After 14 years of dormancy and numerous attempts of reopening, the track "Where it all began", will roar back to life with a handful of events in the second half of 2010.

Walls Roofing UCAR Clash will be participating in the Short Track Shootout Weekend on October 30th; along with Late Model Stock Car (150 laps), Limited Late Model (75 laps), United States Super Truck Series (75 laps), Street stock (50 laps), Walls Roofing UCAR Clash Series (40 laps), and the Allison Legacy Series (35 laps)

The Walls Roofing UCAR Clash Series are both honored and excited to be apart of North Wilkesboro Speedway's triumphant return to life and look forward to bringing the unique style of Stock Grassroots racing which has made our tour popular among other tracks. The Walls Roofing UCAR Clash will race on October 31st. We hope that all UCAR drivers from across the country will look at our rules package and come to participate in this historical event.

The weekend of this race will be a busy one for the Walls Roofing UCAR Clash. On Saturday October 30th the UCAR Clash will be at the Wake County Speedway for its North/South Spectacular weekend. All drivers that race both WCS and N. Wilkesboro will receive 50 bonus points for racing in both events for the weekend.
