Where Scots Live
Immigration has made Scotland a multicultural society. Most immigrants live in the cities. East Asians, Italians and Eastern Europeans are the largest immigrant groups. Many immigrants have brought their own family traditions to Scotland.
Scottish society is highly urbanized. The largest cities are Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness, but there are many smaller cities. Scottish cities have a tradition of multi-family housing. Originally, buildings containing apartments or flats were known as "tenements." Although in North America, this term suggests slum housing, in Scotland it simply meant shared housing. Today, most city dwellers live in row houses or in modern flats.
