*Safety experts say three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives.*
Drunk driving is the most frequently committed violent crime in our nation, and Texas leads the nation in alcohol-related traffic deaths. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,745 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in Texas in 2002. The Department of Public Safety reports that alcohol-related crashes caused 25,142 injuries in 2001, and arrests in Texas for driving while intoxicated top 96,000 annually. Young adults between the ages of 21 and 34 are more likely to be in drunk driving crashes or to be arrested for driving while intoxicated than those in other age groups.
Underage drinking is a serious problem. Alcohol was involved in 25,490 crashes in 2001 and took the lives of 303 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years old.
