A Cure for Stress

Galatians 5:22-23

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

For several years now one of the main topics of life in our modern society is stress. It seems everyone has it, and everyone talks about it. There are a vast multitude of products and services tauted to help one deal with or relieve stress. Vitamins and foods; health drinks and supplements; exercise and meditation programs like yoga and tai chi; mattresses and pillows; bath oils and scented candles; and a variety of music and sound collections. And all of these items generate millions of dollars in sales. Indicating just how great of an issue stress is, and how much people are willing to do to deal with it.

It is sad that most Americans, even many who claim to be Christians, do not realize that the Bible has a cure for stress. It is called the Holy Spirit. For those who accept Jesus as the Son of God, and give themselves to him, Jesus has promised that they shall have a Comforter, and receive peace.

These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. - John 14:25-27 (King James Version)

If we have the peace of Jesus with us and in us, then we will not be troubled or worried. In other words, we will not be afflicted with stress. But notice that Jesus says that he does not give peace as the world does. What does that mean?

Well, what does the world portray as the peace it has to offer? It shows you a cruise were you get to eat anything you want, as much as you want. It shows you a beach where you get to lie in the Sun and play in the water as much as you like. It shows you the special bed; the special drink; the special light; the special candle. The world offers you temporary peace at a price. What Jesus promises us is continuous peace for all times. And it is a free gift from his father, God.

As Paul tells us in Galatians 5:22-23, along with the peace of Jesus, those who have received the gift of the Holy Spirit will have love, joy, gentleness, and temperance. All are antidotes for stress. You will not be stressed out if you are feeling, deep inside you, joy and gentleness. And the peace of God is best part of the whole package deal.

So, when you are feeling stressed, remember that there is something other than a pill or a drink or a trip to the beach that will give you relief. The relief you seek is as close as your savior, Jesus Christ. And, as he has promised, he is with you, always.

May the grace and peace of God the Father, the Lord Jesus, and the Holy Spirit be with you. Amen.

Be bold. Be Brave. And the grace of God and the Lord Jesus be with you.
