September Picture of the Month
Fall Panorama from High Knob in Virginia | From Wayne Browning

Big Cherry Lake in southwest Virginia, although not visible in the photograph, is located beneath the ridges near left-center of picture at an elevation of 3120 feet above sea level. It's 100 acres of pristine water will soon be increased by the construction of a new dam next to the existing one on the South Fork of the Powell River, which heads in the basin. Upper portions of the Big Cherry are boggy, being worked by beavers, and form high elevation wetlands. Some of the coldest temperatures in southwestern Virginia can occur amid this high elevation basin, via cold air drainage off the surrounding 3600 to 4200 foot terrain around High Knob. This picture was shot from the Lookout Tower in High Knob Meadows, at an elevation of 4223 feet above sea level.
