Criteria for District V Contests


Note: This list is compiled from the District V Bylaws, the State TFTA Handbook, and accorded practices in District V. Nothing in the criteria is intended to supersede the Bylaws or TFTA Handbook. All rules must be followed strictly or disqualification will result.

TOP FIVE PROJECTS

1. The chapter president and advisor may prepare a one page description (8 ½ x11 typewritten) of the project. The name of the school and chapter may not appear in any form in the description.

2. A cover sheet (81/2x11 typewritten) will accompany the description. It must have the name of the high school, chapter, city and district.

3. One photograph may be attached.

4. Only one entry per chapter may be submitted.

5. Trophies are awarded to the top five projects. There will be no first, second, third, fourth or fifth places, just five top projects. If five or less chapters enter, each chapter receives a trophy. If more than five top projects are received, the judges will select the top five projects on a holistic basis.

6. All projects may be entered in the state competition.



ART

1. Ratings of 1 through 10 should be used with 10 being the best and 1 being poor.

2. The following criteria will be considered: composition, color, imagination, originality, relationship to theme, and overall quality.

3. The project with the highest number of points shall be first place.

4. Trophies are given for first, second, and third place.

5. The first and second place winners will advance to state.



THEME

1. REPRESENTATION- In the District meet, each chapter shall be permitted one contestant in theme writing.

2. TITLE- The title of the theme shall be the same as the TFTA theme.

3. COMPOSITION-

A. Nature- The theme is to be expository in nature. Narrative passages may be used, but only for the purpose of illustrating an idea or point that is being explained.

B. Length- Must be 2-3 pages in length and double spaces on a 60 space line.

C. Must be completely student work.

D. No name of the student, chapter, or school is to appear in the composition.

4. TITLE SHEET- The theme must have a cover sheet identifying the title, the contestant and his or her chapter, the name of the school, and the name of the city.

5. JUDGING- Three properly qualified and impartial judges shall be informed of the criteria before the judging takes place.

6. EVALUATION- The compositions are to be graded as to relative excellence in interest, organization, and correctness of style. Interest shall take priority over the other two elements of writing. Interest depends primarily upon substance, upon having to say that is worth saying because of acuteness, analysis or its originality of thought. Organization has clarity as its main goal. The plan of the whole theme should be such that each part contributes to an understanding of the writer's main idea or thesis. It should be logical and fully developed. Correctness of style depends mainly upon sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and word usage.

7. The following point system is to be used: GRAMMAR- 20 points

PUNCTUATION-10 points

ORGANIZATION-20 points

CONTENT ( as it relates to the theme) -25 points

ORIGINALITY/CREATIVITY-15 points

NEATNESS- 10 points

Judges may award up to highest number of points per category. The theme with the highest number of points wins.

8. Trophies are given for first, second, and third place.

9. The first and second place themes advance to state competition.

10. Middle School and Junior High themes will be judged separately. Only 1st Place, 2nd Place and 3rd Place trophies will be awarded. Schools may submit up to 5 themes and all may advance to State.



POETRY

1. Must be on the current theme.

2. Must be no longer than 25 lines in length.

3. Must be typewritten.

4. Must be completely student work.

5. No student, chapter, or school name is to appear in the poetry.

6. The following point system is to be used:

GRAMMAR--20 points

PUNCTUATION- 10 points

ORGANIZATION-20 points

CONTENT-(as it relates to the poem/theme)- 25 points

ORIGINALITY/CREATIVITY- 15 points

NEATNESS- 10 points

Judges may award up to the highest number of points per category. The poem with the highest number of points wins.

7. A title page must be attached to the entry with the title, student name, school name, and chapter name.

8. Trophies are given for first, second, and third place.

9. The first and second place poems advance to state competition.

10. Middle School and Junior High poetry will be judged separately. Only 1st Place, 2nd Place and 3rd Place trophies will be awarded. Schools may submit up to 5 poems and all may advance to State.



MR./ MISS FTA

1. The student who makes the best appearance and speech shall be declared the winner. Each of the following will be worth 1-10 points: content, bodily actions (eye contact, gestures etc.), organization, relationship to theme, and delivery (smoothness, grammar, etc.).

2. There shall be a panel of judges and a timekeeper.

3. Each contestant will have three minutes for presentation of his or her speech.

4. Timekeeper will have time cards to hold up as a warning. Contestants will have ten seconds past the three minutes to complete a sentence. Any further time will result in disqualification.

5. Each judge shall submit a ranking of the performances with the best speaker ranking number one and the other speeches ranked according to their quality, with the lowest number indicating the lowest rank.

6. Trophies are awarded for first, second, and third places in both Mr. and Miss FTA.

7. First place Miss FTA and first place MR. FTA will advance to state competition.



SCRAPBOOK CONTEST

1. Junior High schools may compete in this event along with Senior High schools.

2. The scrapbooks should have a hard cover and range in size from 12" to 18" x 24". Creative shapes are desirable as long as they are not too big or burdensome. This is determined by the judges. Many schools construct or make their own covers in art or industrial class. Frequently the covers are of handtooled leather or painted and/or engraved plywood. Scrapbooks will not be enclosed in a case.

3. Contents: Any type of printed, duplicated, or handwritten material which will adequately represent any of the varied activities of your FTA chapter. Usual materials include newspaper clippings, banquet programs, and similar items. Where newspaper clippings are used, underline the names of FTA members and chapters. Label all photos. Include a title page and table of contents. Materials for pages and cover should be made durable so they will be able to be observed by convention participants without falling apart. Easy opening is an important criteria. More emphasis will be placed on content rather than artistic covers. The material should cover the time frame of state convention to state convention and follow the theme of the year of competition.

4. Points are awarded on the following basis:

COVER: Theme and year noted-- 10 points

Color-- 10 points

Art Work--10 points

CONTENT: Photos labeled--10 points

Variety of mementos--10 points

Title page and table of contents--10 points

Organization and arrangement of photos and momentos-10 points

Use of theme throughout-- 10 points

GENERAL COMMENTS: Technical skills-- 10 points

General appearance-- 10 points

5. The scrapbook with the highest number of points is first place.

6. Trophies are given for first, second, and third places.

7. All scrapbooks may advance to state.



YEARBOOK CONTEST

1. Junior High schools may compete in this event along with Senior High schools.

2. Entry form must be filled out and accompany the yearbook.

3. Entry submitted must be an exact example of yearbook which was distributed to every member of the chapter.

4. Points shall be awarded on the following basis:

COVER: Design and art content -- 10 points

CONTENT: Format, organization of material and complete information on the chapter-- 10 points

Use of photograph and art work -- 10 points

Imaginative "extras" which enhance the book and give it extra dimensions-- 10 points

General appearance and overall quality, use of text type, headings, contrast, white space, balance, added colors, quality of reproduction (printing) -- 10 points.

5. The yearbook with the highest number of points wins.

6. Trophies will be awarded for first, second, and third places.

7. All yearbooks may advance to state.

Suggestions for a chapter's yearbook content:

1. Format: attractive, meaningful to FTA, and convenient in size.

2. The name of the chapter, district, and the Texas Future Teachers of America, each written by full name, and use of the FTA symbol.

3. The name of the school, the address, and the year for which the yearbook is published.

4. The date of the local chapter organization and the advisor ( individual or organization both).

5. The TFTA pledge.

6. The names and school addresses of the FTA state officers.

7. The names and school addresses of the district officials.

8. The names and telephone numbers of the local chapter officials.

9. The chapter committees and chairpersons.

10. The chapter program, the subject, the leader, the time, and the place of each program emphasizing some phase of leadership training for FTA.

11. One or more chapter projects listed.

12. The chapter membership listed in alphabetical order and with grade classification.

13. Special features as: past presidents, district and state honors, emblem, colors, district and state constitution, and scheduled meetings.



TSTA-TFTA SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

The Texas State Teachers Association awards annually two $1000 scholarships to outstanding students from the TFTA chapters. These students must plan to enter the teaching profession. Scholarship stipends will be $125.00 per semester issued upon receipt of registration records showing enrollment that semester and education major.

1. Applicants will submit a portfolio at District Competition.

2. The portfolio will include:

An essay of their goal in entering the teaching profession.

Proof of an A-B overall average.

Proof of being an active TFTA member.

One recommendation from an advisor.

Two recommendations from others.

3. Judges shall select two portfolios to advance to state competition.



DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

District V TFTA awards annually (depending on available District funds) one scholarship up to $500 to an outstanding student form the District V TFTA chapters. This student must plan to enter the teaching profession. Scholarship stipend will be issued upon receipt of registration records showing enrollment that semester and education major.

1. Applicants will submit a portfolio at District Competition.

2. The portfolio will include:

An essay of their goal in entering the teaching profession.

Proof of an A-B overall average.

Proof of being an active TFTA member.

One recommendation from an advisor.

Two recommendations from others.

3. Judges shall select one portfolio as the winner.



BEST CHAPTER AWARD

1. Presented to the top three chapters at the District Banquet.

2. Each of the following is worth five points:

Chapter participation in district workshop

Each 5% of members attending the district banquet (based on pre-sale tickets)

3. Each of the following is worth 10 points:

Each district contest entered

Running for district office or delegate-at-large

Each 5 new member increase from last year's paid district membership

Participation by chapter attendance at district convention

4. The following is worth 15 points:

Each newsletter article

5. Each of the following is worth 25 points:

Each new chapter started

Paying state dues before district convention

6. The following is worth 20 points

Paying district dues on or before leadership conference



NAMETAG

1. No larger than 3 x 5.

2. Must include: member’s name, chapter name, and name of school.

3. Should include current theme.

4. Be creative and unique.

5. Submit sample, marked as "SAMPLE" for judging at the District Convention.

6. This is not an official contest in our BYLAWS, so trophies are not award to the winner.

7. The winning nametag will be used as the nametag for the District Banquet.

8. Judging will be holistic.



EDUCATIONAL ISSUES

The Educational Issues contest will stress teaching. Two entries from each district may advance to state competition. Validation forms for state competition must be postmarked by January 10.

1. The contestants will make a five to ten minute presentation of information (not a speech) on a current issue in education. (The issue is determined by the contestant)

2. Contestants may use any audio-visual aid that they wish but must supply necessary equipment, including extension cords.

3. A panel will judge the contestants and ask them questions about their topic after their presentation.

4. Contestants should be prepared to defend their position.

5. Evaluation will be based upon organization, content, delivery, and ability to defend position.



VIDEO CONTEST

Local or district video scrapbook on VHS ½" film that is an expression of a local or district's years in FTA with a narrative relating visuals to the current TFTA theme.

1. Length of video is to five to eight minutes.

2. A copy of the tape is to be brought to state convention for state competition.

3. The tape becomes the property of TFTA.

4. All entries for state must be accompanied by the official TFTA release form.

5. All locals or districts may enter separate contests.

6. The videos may be used as public service announcements to further the field of teaching.
