Cub Scout Pack 1142
October 2001 Newsletter
The year is off and running! We have many activities coming up so please call the appropriate person for further details on the activities listed. Scout Fair The annual Sam Houston Council Scout Fair is December 1 at the Astroarena. Each scout should have a book of tickets for the fair. Since this is a major fund raiser for the pack, we are asking each scout to sell at least one book (15 tickets). The Texans patch is earned after 8 tickets and an Aeros ticket is earned after 15. Additional books are available from your den leader. Prizes are also earned with the sales, so be sure to turn your money in by October 18 for the triple stamp deadline. The coupons alone are worth more than the cost of the ticket! Other Events Two of our biggest annual events are the Pinewood Derby Race in January and the Blue & Gold Dinner in February. We are in desperate need of a parent volunteer to help coordinate each of these two events. If you are willing to help out, please call: Brian Garza at (281) 812-2910 or Fred Gregory at (281) 225-0001 Outings Our first pack camping outing for the year will be at Rusk State Park October 26-28. This outing includes a train ride for the scouters. Since the pack must pay in advance, we are asking each camper to turn in money by October 18 to hold your place. Please call Suzanne Hedgepath at (281) 852-7309 for details. Pack 1142 will be joining other packs from the Flaming Arrow District to attend Camp Bovay on November 17 and 18. This is the new Houston area boy scout camp. Please note that this camp is for scouters and parents only. Each scout must come with an adult. Siblings are welcome on our family campouts (e.g. Rusk) but Camp Bovay is not set up for families. The cost is $30 per person and you should make reservations immediately if you have not already done so. Please call Patty Doyle at (281) 852-3814 for information. Pack Recharter Our pack must register annually with the Boy Scouts organization in a process called “re-chartering”. This is coming up so we must ask all of our returning scouts to pay dues for the 2002 calendar year. Checks should be made out to “Cub Scout Pack 1142” as follows: Webelos: $60.00 Bears & Wolves: $55.00 Tigers: $47.00 This fee includes an optional $9 subscription to Boy’s Life. 2002 annual fees for new scouts are included in your initial registration. New scouts who have not paid yet should see your den leader for the appropriate fee. We would like to have all new and returning scouts paid for the Year 2002 by the October 25 Pack meeting. Pack Meetings We apologize for the confusion regarding the Rain Gutter Regatta. For several reasons, we were unable to get the boats to many scouts in time to allow them to be built for the original date. The Regatta has been rescheduled for Saturday October 13, 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Beckwith’s Automotive, across from the Lamb of God Church, will sponsor the race under their awning. The timing will allow scouts who would like to attend the Activity Day (9:00 a.m. – Noon) at Kroger’s in Atascocita to do so that morning. Bring your boats ready to race! Our annual pumpkin contest will be held on October 25 at Pine Forest Elementary at 7:00 p.m. Each scout should bring a colored and decorated pumpkin for judging at the pack meeting. (For safety reasons, carved pumpkins are not allowed and will be disqualified from the contest.) Den Meetings At Lamb of God unless otherwise noted: Tigers: 10/2 7:00, next meeting TBA Wolves: 10/2, 10/16, 10/30 all at 7:00 Bears: 10/2 7:00 at LOG, 10/16 6:30 at the Humble Fire Dept. Webelos 4th: TBA Webelos 5th: 10/2, 10/9, 10/16 at 7:00 Leader Meetings The monthly Flaming Arrow District Round Table will be held October 4 at 7:30 at the United Methodist Church on Pinehurst. A pack leaders’ meeting is also scheduled for 7:00, October 11 at the Atascocita Alberton’s. All leaders are requested to attend. A note of thanks to Brian Garza, Suzanne Hedgepath, and Troy Covart for attending the all day leader’s training on September 22. Also thanks to Jimmy Roberts for attending Wood Badge or Advanced Leader Training. These leaders are keeping our pack strong!
