Why is Project Graduation Needed?
Project Graduation events have become a well-established tradition at many schools across the nation. The original event grew out of a spate of tragedies that occurred in Maine. Two years in a row, students were killed in drug- and alcohol-related accidents on graduation night - 18 students in all.
Statistics tell us that teens are at highest risk for using drugs and alcohol on both prom night and graduation night. Although teens attend parties throughout the senior year, peer pressure appears to be at it highest on these two nights. High school graduation is a time for teens to celebrate their accomplishments and to make plans for the future. However, when the celebration includes drugs and/or alcohol mixed with driving, a night that started out as fun can easily turn into a night of tragedy and loss.
We cannot just tell our kids to "Just Say No" to alcohol and drugs. Instead, we must offer an alternative celebration. The current trend among teens is to hire a chauffeur and limousine for Prom Night, therefore, Graduation Night is when we have chosen to hold our "alternate" celebration and this alternative is Project Graduation. The Humble High School tradition of Project Graduation as an alternative celebration began in 1988. Over 90 percent of our graduates participate in this event.
