Elkhart House Project -

October 6, 2001

I haven't updated the site in a few weeks because the house hasn't changed that much.  Caulking and a few outside trim pieces doesn't change the look much.

This weekend we installed the roof.  It took about 21 squares to complete.  I used an Owens-Corning 20-year 3 tab roof.  Driftwood is the color.  I went with a 20 year because it was cheaper and with a high pitched roof just about anything will shed water.  As with most roofs I'd be surprised if I got the full 20 years anyway.

We started about 8:00am and finished just after dark.  I completed the ridges on Sunday morning.  I put a ridge vent across the top of the main ridge.  Amazing the air flow coming through there when I cut the tar paper.  The soffit vents will keep the air moving up the rafters.

Ronald came over to help Johnny and I out a bit.  Blake was also a big help on the dormers.  He can climb that steep roof better than all of us.
On the roof, just about have the porch done.
Here is a good view of the house and roof.
No more toe boards.  The roof vents are in place for the plumbing.
This is the swing I made for Mischelle.  One of her favorite spots.
