How to Make Questions

Study Guide

On yes/no questions, use this pattern:

Auxiliary (do)              Subject                                   Verb                            Rest of Sentence

Do

you

like

vegetables?

Does

he

eat

meat?

On Progressive Tense:  When using the verb “to be” include “ing” form:

Auxiliary (be)              Subject                                   Verb                            Rest of Sentence

Are

you

studying

tonight?

Is

Martha

leaving

now?

If have is the main verb, use a form of do:

Auxiliary (do)              Subject                                   Verb                            Rest of Sentence

Do

you

have

a nice car?

Does

John

have

his keys?

Remember when you use a form of do to make a question, the verb is always in simple form.

Auxiliary               Subject                 Verb                   Rest of Sentence

Do

You

study

everyday?

Does

He

study

at night?

Did

They

study

last weekend?

On yes/no questions using a question word, be sure to put the question word first.

Question Word   Auxiliary or   Subject         Verb             Rest of Sentence                                                     “be”

When

did

you

finish

your work?

When

are

you

finishing

your work?

In a sentence that uses have to, or have got to, use a form of do to make the question.

I have got to go to the doctor this morning.

When do you have to go to the doctor?

Sally has got to leave at six.

When (What time) does Sally have to leave?

Remember:  Have is the simple form of the verb.
