Khmer Accented Syllables

 


Most Khmer words  have one and two syllables. some have 
three syllables and more that those words were borrowed 
from Sanskrit and Pali. In the two and more syllable word, 
there are  strong and weak stress patterns.

In the case of two-syllable word, Khmer used to pronounce
the second syllable stronger than the first syllable. 

The stressed  syllable is bold styled.

angkeap (frog)
angkar (rice)
angkaar (organization)
angguy (sit)
bang' ek ( support)
sangkae( a name of tree)
samrual(facilitate)
samraam( trash)
bampenh     (fill)
chamnaek   ( a part)
chamrœn    (plenty, many)
chamrœan  ( speed up, push)

Khmer-Sanskrit/ Pali with prefix  pra, sam, 
para, a, vi, su, nir, sa, saha, ma, u, o
prates ( pradesha = country)
vises, pises (special)
paralok (other world)
samaagam ( association)
anek (many, more than one)
uraa (chest)
suvanna (gold)
osadh (medicine)

Other words  have the first syllable stressed.
dharmanuñña(constitution)
brahmachaari (promacharey=virgin)
rattha(state)
ratha (car)
punya (merit)

In the case of compound words
samram(  nice looking, polite)
gruugrea ( teachers)
