Alexander LaVelle Harris has lived in Sunnydale his whole life. He grew up best friends with Willow Rosenburg,and they used to play literal "doctor"(Willow used actual medical texts). Xander's other best friend was Jesse- that is, until Jesse was turned into a vampire and was staked by Xander. He learned Buffy's secret by accident, hearing her and Giles talking in the library, and insisted on helping from about then on (although often with complaints). Although he had a crush on Buffy the moment he saw her, Xander has had many girlfriends- several harmful to his health, and not many normal. From a praying mantis teacher("Teacher's Pet") to a mummy princess("Inca Mummy Girl") to Cordelia Chase to the entire female population of Sunnydale("Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered"), Xander's girls have been varied and, um, interesting. Now, he spends his time with a former vengeance demon named Anya, whom he recently proposed to. He's one of the original members of the Scooby Gang, and, although he has never really liked any of Buffy's boyfriends, he's always maintained his friendship with all the gang.
