My Best Friend
Mel (on the left) and Liz (on the right) on their way to start a new life...or something
It all started one lazy afternoon in Geometry class in August of 1995. I came in class and sat next to Mel. I didn't know her, but I knew of her and decided she was ok (although she did date some real weird guys, but so did I). She was looking at the football schedule and well...I wanted to see it, so I said "can I see that?" and she handed it to me and that was just the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
From that point on, I knew I had found the kind of friend in her that I had always wanted. We had a teacher that called us Melissabeth (I guess she got us confused), we would skip class together because our wuss boyfriends were too scared and always wanted to get the good seat in class, and we would even put our lunch money together to get the good food from the cafeteria. We were such good friends that we EVEN broke up with our boyfriends on the same day, just so we would go through the same thing at the same time. I can't remember if we laughed or cried.
For the past 5 years, we have seen eachother through thick and thin, regardless of the circumstances. She was there during some of the toughest times of my life, and without her there I honestly don't know how I would have gotten through them. Instead of judging me for mistakes I made, she would lead me through them. She always showed me there WAS a tomorrow and "this too will pass". When I left Fort Worth I had no idea what I was going to do without her around. For so many years I always knew that she would just be there when I needed a shoulder to cry on, just felt like acting stupid, or wanted to have a religious conversation at 3:00 in the morning for no reason. Even when we lived 350 miles apart we rarely missed a day of eachother's life and counted down the days until we saw eachother again. Then eventually, I left that evil town and came back. Needless to say - she's my best friend!

These Are the Gifts of a Very Best Friend
A lifetime of love in a hug and a smile,
A reason to visit and stay for a while ––
The strength of a bond that's destined to last,
The joys of the present, The warmth of the past...
These are the treasures a fortunate few
Are lucky to cherish all their lives through.
These are the blessings on which we depend,
For these are the gifts of a very best friend.
