Born in North Bay, Ontario, Canada and raised in Brampton, Ontario, Thompson first became interested in sketch comedy when he saw "The Kids in the Hall" perform in a midnight show at the Poor Alex Theatre in Toronto. After "The Kids" saw Thompson perform at Theatre Sports, they brought him aboard. The troupe was then discovered by Lorne Michaels who brought them to New York in 1989. In New York, they found success with a one-hour HBO special, followed by a series that aired on CBC, HBO, and CBS and currently airs on COMEDY CENTRAL.
