Members of the 468 AAA Battalion during training at Camp Haan, California

DEDICATION

This page is dedicated to the soldiers who served in the 468th AAA Battalion during World War II. These heroes answered the call to defend the United States during a critical period and sacrificed much to insure our freedom today.

The 468th AAA Battalion was activated on October 15, 1942 at Camp Haan, California under the command of Col. Vincent L. Greaves, who led the battalion through training until the end of the war in Europe.

The battalion departed the United States in July 1944 and landed at Utah Beach, France on August 30, 1944 to begin its combat mission. The 468th was originally assigned to Gen. George S. Patton's Third Army and fought its way across northern France into Begium, Luxembourg, and finally ending up at Hitler's own Berchtesgaden in southern Germany by war's end. The unit participated in the terrible, frigid fighting during the Battle of the Bulge, as part of Gen. Patton's famous drive to rescue the American forces defending the Belgian city of Bastogne. In all, the 468th took part in five major campaigns including:

  • Normandy
  • Northern France
  • Ardennes
  • Rhineland
  • Central Europe
  • This page is not affiliated with any current military unit or group and is intended to be a commemoration of the accomplishments of the 468 AAA Battalion during World War II. My father, J.T. Williams (far left in above photo), was in the 468th during the war and drove a halftrack during the battalion's five campaigns. He, as many WW II veterans, never spoke of his actions in the war. After his death, I wanted to learn more about his war-time experiences which led me to associate membership in the Veterans' of the Battle of the Bulge and eventually to former members of the 468th. These veterans have formed the 468 AAA Battalion Association and have an annual reunion. Our country owes a huge debt to the soldiers who served so well six decades ago, and this page is intended to pay tribute to their unselfishness, courage and sacrifice.
