Chapter 10

Emma couldn’t decide what to wear. She really didn’t have too much and what she did have didn’t fit the image for a wife of a pop star. Not wanting to embarrass Kevin though, she called for him to come into her room.

“What’s up…you better hurry, Carlos will be here any minute and the man doesn’t like to be kept waiting.”

“I don’t know what to wear, I don’t want to embarrass you or anything.”

“Well, let’s see here.” Kevin started going through her closet. He had put her clothes away when they first arrived, so he kinda knew what to expect. After thoroughly searching her closet, he moved on to the drawers. Tearing the drawers apart, he finally settled on jeans and a light yellow t-shirt. Holding them up, he smiled. “This should do.”

Emma scrunched her nose, “That’s what you want me to wear?”

“Sure, why not?” He noticed her underwear drawer still open and grabbed her bra, “Or would you rather just wear this?” Kevin held up her bra and smiled, “I didn’t even know they came this way.” Her breasts were rather large, F cup to be exact, so when it came to bra’s…there wasn’t a whole lot to choose from.

“What way?" She grabbed the bra from him, "Are you referring to it being big and ugly?"

He nodded.

"Kevin, knock it off,” she stuffed the bra back in her drawer.

“I didn’t think so.” He laughed, “What’s wrong with the jeans?”

“Nothing, I just thought maybe you would want me to wear a suit or something.”

“Are you serious?” Kevin couldn’t hold back his laughter and Emma was turning a bright shade of pink. “Listen Emma, you’re going to the store…not a party, you’re allowed to wear jeans. I think maybe I gave you the wrong impression. You don’t need to go and get all dressed up every time you go somewhere. You just need to look presentable. You know…hair, makeup done…that sort-of thing. Because the time you decide not to do that, that will be the time the press takes your picture. Trust me on that, it happens to the best of us!”

She looked away, “Oh okay.”

“Now, lets see what we can do with your hair.” Kevin turned Emma around so that she was facing her dresser mirror and he stood directly behind her. He was amazingly built; tall, large chest, muscular arms and a wonderful head of hair that looked like he was starting to let it grow out. Emma was trying hard not to stare at him, but it wasn’t working.

“What are you looking at?” he questioned her gaze.

“Your hair. I think we should do something with YOUR hair.”

Kevin’s hands instinctively went to his hair and he started playing with it. “What’s wrong wit’ my hair? I’m trying to grow it out a little that’s all…it’s in the in-between stage.”

“I’m kidding, don’t be so sensitive.”

“I take my hair very seriously.” Kevin shot.

Rolling her eyes, Emma let out a long sigh, “Fine.”

Kevin grabbed her brush on the dresser and began brushing her hair. “When’s the last time you cut this?”

“Over three years ago, why? Is it that bad?” Emma asked shyly.

“No, no, it’s not that. It’s just that it’s so long. Actually, your hair is very pretty, just a little frizzy, that’s all.”

Emma smiled and continued watching him. Slowly, he made his way through her entire head of hair. Leaning over, he whispered in her ear. “I think Carlos is here…you better get a move on.”

Emma could feel his breath against her neck and it sent shivers down her spine. She stood completely still and kept staring at him.

“Emma.” Kevin’s voice grew louder, “Do you hear that horn out there?”

Carlos was honking the horn outside but Emma was so caught up in the moment that she didn’t hear it. Grabbing her clothes that Kevin picked out, she ran into the bathroom and slammed the door. When she came back out seconds later, Kevin was sitting on her bed. Grabbing her purse, she made a bee-line for the door.

“Gotta go, my ride awaits!” Emma was just about out the door when Kevin grabbed her arm and twirled her around.

“Aren’t you forgetting something?”

“Oh yeah, I think fifty dollars should cover it.”

Kevin grabbed his wallet out from his back pocket and handed her a hundred dollar bill. “Here, have fun… but I wasn’t referring to that.”

“What then?”

“A goodbye kiss.” Emma’s eyes got real huge when Kevin came closer to her, “We have to look like we’re married here, let’s not forget that.” He gave her a quick little peck on the lips and off she went.

**********

Kevin relaxed on the couch and started flipping through the channels when the phone started ringing. He checked the caller ID and silently swore under his breath. He knew Jack would be calling him eventually, he was just hoping it wouldn’t be so soon.

“Hello Jack.” Kevin’s tone wasn't pleasant. “I knew it wouldn’t be long before I heard from you and Jive.”

“And a happy hello to you too.” Jack replied.

“Let’s cut to the chase here, can you guys make it over here now? I would rather just get this whole thing over and done with.”

“We’re already on our way, be there in about thirty minutes or so.” Jack smiled, knowing Kevin was most probably pissed that they didn’t call and check with him first before heading to his place.

“I can hardly wait.”

“I bet, listen, I hope you have some good explanations about this whole thing because you’re in it up to your eyeballs.” Jack’s voice was getting louder and louder.

“I don’t know if they’re good explanations, but they’ll have to do. Just remember who works for who here.” He slammed down the phone and threw it across the room.

Thank God Emma isn’t here right now, she doesn’t need to see this shit...hopefully, her afternoon will be better than this.

“Kevin honey, something wrong?” Anne questioned once seeing the look on her son’s face.

“No, Jack just called and he and some reps from Jive are on their way over, so, you might want to make yourself scarce.”

“Is Emma around? Maybe we can get to know each other better.”

“Sorry, Carlos took her shopping.”

“Well, I suppose I could use a swim then. Let me know when the shindig is over…I just hope I don’t prune up first.”

Kevin laughed, “It shouldn’t take too long.”

“That’s what you always say dear.”

Chapter 11

The ride to the store was eerily quiet. Emma didn’t say much and Carlos didn’t know what to say.

“What store did you want to go to anyway?”

She shrugged, “I don’t know…is there a K-Mart or Wal-mart around here?”

“Wal-mart is the closest, we’ll go there.”

“Sorry you have to go with me, Kevin insisted on it and besides, I don’t have a drivers license.”

Carlos’ eyebrows shot up, “For real?”

“Yeah, for real.”

He looked over at her to question her further, but decided against it when he saw the sadness in her eyes. “Hey, it’s no problem, I get paid for this.”

They pulled into the parking lot and walked towards the door. Carlos stayed back a couple feet to give her space. “You can walk with me, I don’t bite.”

“I know you don’t…protocol.”

“Oh okay, am I allowed to talk to you or do we just pretend we don’t know each other?”

“You can talk if you want, but you don’t have too. I’m just here to watch your back and make sure no one makes any moves.”

Upon entering the store, Emma became paranoid suddenly and stopped.

“It’s okay Emma, just act normal and go about your shopping.” Carlos grabbed a cart and pushed it towards her.

Slowly, Emma started to make her way through the store. After a few minutes, she noticed the hair care products and quickly did a u-turn to go down the aisle.

She went over to study the boxes; suddenly having this urge to dye her hair blonde. Actually, it was something she had always wanted to do, but never had the courage. Tonight, she was determined to find the courage.

After looking over the boxes carefully, she chose the box that closely resembled what color she liked.

After placing the dye in her cart, she headed for the sanitary products. Her reason for wanting to come to the store in the first place was for sanitary products, because she certainly didn’t want to ask Kevin to get them. She had started her period that morning and desperately needed to get some pads and tampons. She headed down that aisle and instantly remembered that Carlos was there as well. Not wanting to do this again for a while, she grabbed ten boxes of tampons, ten boxes of pads, six boxes of panty liners and six boxes of nighttime pads.

Carlos eyes grew large as he watched her place all the items in the cart, which was overflowing now. My God, this woman is having the mother of all periods!

Emma kept on pushing the cart down the aisles, not daring to turn around and look at Carlos. She picked up some shampoo, conditioner, de-tangler spray and hair gel, then proceeded down the deodorant aisle.

She grabbed some deodorant, toothpaste, floss and a new toothbrush. She stopped to think about what else she needed. She knew that she wouldn’t be able to make it the store often, so she wanted to make sure she got everything she needed.

“Where are the birthday cards?” she asked Carlos.

“Straight ahead and to the right.”

Aunt Bet’s birthday was coming up and she wanted to send her a card. Glancing down at all the birthday cards, she noticed the guys’ pictures on some of them. She studied the cards intently and replied, “Oh my God, there’s Kevin…my husband is on a birthday card?”

“Shhh…I wouldn’t say that too loud…besides, your husband’s face is on more than just birthday cards,” Carlos warned her.

“Oops, sorry.”

She grabbed the card with Kevin’s picture on it and then grabbed a birthday card for Aunt Betty.

“Carlos, I want to buy Kevin’s latest CD…could you show me which one that is?”

“You don’t have to buy his CD…get real woman, you can get one for free. For that matter, Kevin probably has about twenty copies lying around the house somewhere.”

“I don’t want to bother him with that, I just want to buy one okay?”

“Whatever you say.” He pointed towards the center of the store where the music was.

“Why don’t you just wait until next month, their new CD is coming out then.” Carlos suggested.

“I want to learn their old stuff first, I can only memorize so much. Besides, I need to hear the song, I want it that way…he told me it was a big hit.”

“You’ve never heard it?”

Emma spoke quietly, “I don’t think so.”

Carlos looked at her sadly and grabbed the Millennium cd from the rack. “Here it is.”

“Thanks." She placed the CD in the cart and turned around, "Okay, that should do it.”

They headed to the check out lane and Emma noticed the tabloids right away. She couldn’t miss it…there she was with her husband…on the cover of a tabloid magazine.

“Oh my God, that’s me,” she pointed to the tabloid. She couldn’t take her eyes off of it. It read, Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson weds Lou Pearlman's Niece!

Carlos leaned over and whispered, “Just ignore it, it won’t be the last time you see something like that.”

“I want to read the article.” She grabbed the tabloid and placed it face down in her cart.

Carlos shook his head in disbelief. Kevin was not going to like this one bit and he knew it. He was trying to decide whether or not he should fill her in on the tabloid rule. After a few moments, he decided that there are some things that she was gonna have to learn the hard way and this was one of them.

Placing all her items on the conveyer belt, she felt her face starting to flush. She did buy an awful lot of sanitary products and Carlos was probably mortified. She turned back to look at him, but he was busy eyeing down the place, looking for who knows what.

“That will be one hundred seventy-two dollars and twenty-nine cents.”

Emma reached for her wallet and all of a sudden turned white. She grabbed Carlos by the arm and whispered to him that she only had a hundred dollars.

Carlos reached for his wallet and pulled out a credit card. Handing it to the cashier, he mumbled, “Tell Kevin you need a charge card, would ya?”

The cashier swiped his card and handed him the receipt to sign. The bagger was putting the last of the items in a bag and glanced down at the tabloid.

“Is that you?” she questioned Emma.

Carlos immediately reacted by saying, “No.”

“Yes it is…oh my God, you’re married to one of the Backstreet Boys?”

Carlos replied again, “No, she’s not.”

“You married Howie?”

Carlos started to speak, but Emma interjected, “No, I’m not married to Howie. I’m married to Kevin, Kevin Richardson.”

God no, she didn’t just say that did she?

The bagger smiled, “Can I have your autograph?”

Emma pointed to herself, “My autograph? Why would you want my autograph?”

“Because you’re married to Kevin, that’s why.”

Carlos handed her the pen and spoke quietly but sternly, “Just give her your autograph and let’s get the hell out of here, NOW!”

She signed her name, Emma Richardson. She hadn’t done that before now and it felt a little weird. Holding the paper up, she couldn’t take her eyes off it. Emma Richardson…Emma Richardson…Emma Richardson…

Carlos cleared his throat louder, “Emma!”

Handing the paper to the girl, Emma turned around and looked at Carlos. “Yeah?”

Carlos grabbed her arm and practically dragged her out of the store. Pushing the cart towards the exit, he leaned over so that Emma could hear him. “Don’t EVER do that again, do you understand me? Do you know how dangerous that can be?”

“I’m sorry Carlos.”

Chapter 12

Kevin was in the middle of a heated debate, so heated that Anne could hear it from her spot in the middle of the pool.

“Poor baby,” she mumbled.

“Did you even think of the repercussions for doing this Kevin? My God, Lou Pearlman’s niece for crying out loud…what the hell were you thinking?” Jack was pissed and Kevin was just sitting there taking it all in stride.

“Listen, I am only going to say this once. I can do WHAT I WANT, WHEN I WANT and WITH WHO I WANT. You can’t tell me how to live my life!” Kevin was getting hotter by the minute.

“Kevin, I’m not trying to tell you how to live your life here, but WHAT THE FUCK were you thinking?”

The representative from Jive interjected, noting the conversation was going nowhere. “Jack, please you’re not making things easier here." He turned to look at Kevin, "Listen Kevin; Jive’s only concern in this matter is about timing. You picked a helluva a time to do this. The Global Release tour starts next month, along with the release of the new album that Tuesday.”

“You don’t think I’m aware of that Drew?” Kevin spat back.

“Well, what do you think is going to be on everyone’s mind Kevin? The new album, the record-breaking hundred-hour tour you’re doing to promote the album? NO! It will be all about how you got married the month prior and it was hush-hush to someone no one has ever seen you with and to top it off, your wife is Lou Pearlman’s niece! No one is going to give a shit about the new album…what new album?”

“Isn’t that what you’re paid for guys? Do your fucking job and leave me the hell alone. You figure it out…you run interference on this to make sure it doesn’t come to that. Can’t you request that all the upcoming interviews are NOT to mention my nuptials? I know you’ve done things like that in the past, why can’t you now?”

“Kevin, it’s not that easy. We’re talking about different countries here. We can tell them one thing, but what they do is another. MTV is about the only one we can have some control over. This is not going to be easy!” Drew was holding his head in his hands, indicating he was about to explode.

“Why’d you do it anyway Kevin? She pregnant?” Jack questioned.

“Would everyone please stop asking that …I’m getting tired of answering it…NO, she is NOT pregnant!”

“Did you sign a pre-nup then?”

“Jack, that’s none of your business…that’s between me, my wife and my lawyer, so stay out of it!”

“God, please tell me you signed a pre-nup Kev, you’re scaring me here.”

Kevin glared at Jack and didn’t say another word from there on out. He had had enough.

Did I sign a pre-nup? Yeah...right, like Lou would've went for that.

He wasn’t about to admit that though. This so-called deal he made didn’t include a pre-nup and Kevin knew exactly why. Lou wanted Emma to be able to collect something at the end of this two-year charade of a marriage. Thank god, Kevin was business savvy. Years ago, he had hired a new lawyer to help him with just that, hiding his money. He couldn’t hide all his money, but he could hide a good portion of it. With Ray’s help, he was able to stash some of it away. At the time, it was being hidden from Uncle Sam, but oddly enough now, it was hidden from Emma and Lou too.

Emma would be entitled to some of course, especially his earnings made after their marriage, but at least she couldn’t get it all. In the end, that’s all Lou wanted anyway. Why he wouldn’t just take a payoff was beyond Kevin. Lord knows he tried to buy his way out of this, but Lou wouldn’t hear of it.

He’s already getting one-sixth of what we make greedy little bastard.

“Well, I can see we’re done here Kevin. We’ll be in touch.”

“I’m sure you will be. You can show yourselves out.”

“By the way Kevin, just thinking out loud here, what did the rest of the guys say when you told them you married Lou’s niece?”

Kevin’s look was a dead giveaway.

“They don’t know yet, do they?” Jack questioned.

Kevin didn’t answer him. He knew they would find out soon enough and it wouldn’t be pretty. They were going to be down right pissed.

“They’ll know soon enough Kevin, it’s all over the tabloids as of today.” With that said, both men headed out the door.

“God damn it.” Kevin mumbled. He needed to get the hell out of here. He knew the guys would be calling soon and he didn’t want to face that today. He walked outside towards the pool and bent down near the side.

“Mom, I’m leaving. Tell Emma that I won’t be back until later…I’m sorry, but I just can’t deal with all of this now. I’ll get Carlos to drive you to the airport in the morning, in case I’m not back in time.”

“Kevin, we still have a lot of things to talk about. Are you sure you won’t stay?”

“I can’t, I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. I understand. I wish I could do something to help you. It didn’t sound like things went to good in there.”

Kevin replied wearily, “You could say that.”

“Hang in there. Stand your ground. If you love her like you say you do, then you defend her ‘till the end…do you understand me?”

“Yeah.” He hated himself right now for lying to his mother. He had no choice though. Lou told him that if anyone found out about this farce, the deal was off. He had to make this work or else there would be hell to pay and it would involve everyone who was close to him.

“I’ll call you before we take off next month. I love you.” Kevin went back into the house and headed towards his room. He grabbed a duffle bag and put some clothes in it. Done, he headed towards the door.

Once he got the hell out of the neighborhood, his tension eased up somewhat. He was in desperate need of some company, though. He couldn’t stop thinking about Lou and their last conversation before his wedding…

~~~~~~~~~~
“And when these two years are up…you promise I’ll get the tape and photos, right?”
“Right.” Lou replied sarcastically. “Unless of course this marriage doesn’t last two years.” He was placing all his odds on that one.
“And if it doesn’t?”
“Then I go to the other guys and let them see for themselves what kind of person you really are.”
Kevin stared him down, “You wouldn’t do that.”
“Oh…and why not?”
“Because then you’d have nothing left to blackmail me with.”
Lou scratched his head, “You’re right about that…I guess then maybe we start talking money.”
“I’ve already offered you money.”
“I’m not talking chump change Kevin…”
Kevin got right in his face, “I didn’t offer you chump change!”
“You didn’t offer me enough.”
“Okay then…what’s it gonna take Lou? Millions?”
Lou nodded and started laughing, “That sounds more like it.”
“I’m not about to give you millions Lou…I’ve already given you enough.”
“Then I guess you better count on the next two years and keep your fingers crossed.”
Kevin backed away from him, “How do I know you won’t renege on this again? You did it to me once already.”
“I did?”
“Fuck off Lou. You damn well know you did. After bringing your sorry ass into this group as the sixth member, you promised I’d have the tape and photos.”
“Thanks by the way for suggesting that. I can’t tell you how great it is to be the silent one of the group. Anytime, anywhere and you know I’ll be there to show up and earn my keep.” Lou began dancing around, “I’m not too old to learn those dance moves you know.”
If looks could kill, Lou would’ve been dead on the spot. D E A D! Lou was indeed the sixth Backstreet Boy however, unfortunate as it was. Another deal that Kevin made with the devil. Another deal that Lou didn’t come through on.
“All I got to say Lou is this…you had fuckin’ better keep up your end of the deal this time. You will NOT fuck me over again! When these two years are up…I want those pictures and tape hand fucking delivered to me. Do you understand?”
“Do you really think you’re in a position to threaten me Kevin?”
“It’s not a threat this time Lou. If I don’t kill you myself, I’ll hire someone to do it. That’s a promise!”
~~~~~~~~~~

Kevin’s head was pounding…he picked up his cell phone and dialed Kristin. She was just the kind of company he wanted right now.
