Chapter 115

Emma was furious…absolutely furious. She was on her way to work when her attorney called and asked her to stop by. She didn’t have much time, but agreed to stop by once Luke pleaded with her and told her that he had some interesting news.

Now…she was sorry she did. The interesting news instantly put her in a bad mood and being in a bad mood at the nursing home wasn’t going to go over well. Playing old, historic show tunes on the piano wasn’t easy to do with the type of mood she was sure to take with her.

After stomping around the office in circles, Emma stopped and closed her eyes. What the hell was happening here? She didn’t want his money. Couldn’t he see that? “He can’t be serious.”

Luke sat completely still. “According to his attorney, he’s very serious Emma.”

She sat down and tried like hell to come to grips with everything that Luke had just spelled out. “So…if I don’t take his offer, then what?”

“Why wouldn’t you take it?” he asked, leaning forward and staring directly into her eyes. “It’s two million dollars Emma.”

She shook her head and leaned forward also, placing her hands on his desk. “I don’t want his money…I didn’t then and I sure as hell don’t now.”

Luke watched her face become flush with anger; “Fine…we’ll decline his offer then.”

She smiled and sat back. “Good, that was easy enough.”

“I must warn you though…by not agreeing to his terms, this could take longer than what I originally told you,” Luke replied while placing his pen down and looking at her.

Great…just what she didn’t want to hear. She wanted to give Kevin his freedom, even though she didn’t want her freedom. She wanted nothing more than to try and work this out, but deep down, she knew he’d never give her the chance to explain things. There was no other way to do this…

“How much longer?” she asked carefully.

“Months probably…” he trailed, shrugging. “Can’t say for sure. You know him better than me. How stubborn is he?”

Shit. He was pretty damn stubborn. “And if I except this offer?”

“His attorney has promised me that he’ll sign the papers.”

She closed her eyes and thought long and hard for a few minutes. Two million dollars was a hell of a lot of money. She could do a lot with two million dollars…travel and see the world, dine at only the finest of restaurants, buy a new house, get a big screen TV, a swimming pool with a waterfall would be affordable… Opening her eyes, Emma’s smile nearly hurt her cheeks. Two million dollars was perfect…absolutely perfect. “Fine…then I’ll take the money,”

Her attorney looked over at her and nervously smiled. When he noticed the big smile forming on her lips, he sat back. “What’re you smiling at?”

“Well,” she said while relaxing in the chair. “It is an awful lot of money. I could live pretty comfortably on two million dollars wouldn’t you think?”

“Ah…” Luke coughed for affect. “A little more than comfortably I’d say.”

Emma’s smile widened. “On the interest alone?”

Luke lowered his head. She was just like the rest of them. “Absolutely.”

She reached over and grabbed the pen. “Okay…Luke…Where do I sign?”

Luke let out a long sigh, followed by a “Good girl.” He pointed to the spot and watched as Emma signed her name, “Things will go faster now. As soon as you leave, I’ll call his attorney and let him know that you accepted his offer.”

She got up to leave and turned around. “I’m sure he’ll be thrilled.”

**********

The guys were preparing for their last show of the tour…Las Vegas, Nevada. Tension and excitement filled the air. On one hand, they were glad that it was going to be over and on the other hand, they were disappointed that they wouldn’t be making this the ‘world tour’ that they had promised the fans.

They were still planning on making a stop overseas for a couple shows, but that wouldn’t be until the following month sometime.

When Kevin’s lawyer, Ray finally got in touch with him, he was in the middle of sound check and aggravated with the lack of progress he was making. Picking up his cell phone, he walked over to a secluded area for privacy once he recognized the number. “Hey Ray.”

“Hey Kevin…just wanted to fill you in on the latest news about your divorce.”

“Go on.”

“Talked with Luke Carden today, Emma’s att…”

Kevin cut him off, “I know who he is.”

Ray fidgeted. Kevin was quite capable of being an ass when he wanted to be. “Anyway, Emma agreed to the settlement. She’s signed the amendment and the papers are on their way back...I should have them sometime next week.”

Kevin’s heart dropped. She accepted the settlement? What? She accepted the settlement?

He really didn’t want to hear that. God, how he didn’t want to hear that. “Good, call me when you get them so that we can set up a time to meet.”

“What’s your schedule look like for next week?”

“Last show is tonight, so you can catch me in Orlando from here out,” Kevin replied with a hand over his heart; making sure it was still beating.

“Tour’s over?”

Kevin sighed. “Pretty much.”

“Good, we can meet up the following week then and get this going.” Ray paused momentarily. “You know Kevin, she would’ve settled on two thousand dollars.”

“Water under the bridge now,” he heaved. “Everyone can be bought for a price…and it looks like hers was right around the two mil mark.”

Ray cleared his throat and quickly put an end to the tension. “Alright Kevin…we’ll get this moving just as soon as possible so you can be done with it.”

Kevin lied, “Sounds good to me.” Hanging up the phone, he placed it back in his pocket and headed towards the stage.

She accepted the offer. In a way, he really wasn’t surprised. He should be, but he wasn’t. Kevin was finally coming to grips with everything…to him it looked like it was all about the money after all.

When he made his way back under the stage, AJ was down there looking for him. “Train!”

“Hey Bone, what’s up?”

“I’ve been looking for you, where ya been?”

Kevin reached for his cell phone and pointed to it. “Ray called, she took the money.”

AJ stepped back, confused. “Huh?”

Kevin repeated himself, “She took the money.”

“What’re you talking about…who’s she and what money?”

Kevin took a deep breath and glared at his friend. What was so hard to understand about what he just said? “The she is Emma and the money is two million dollars.”

AJ only had to think for a minute before it came back to him. His eyes widened, hand flying up to his neck. “Oh…no shit.”

Kevin nodded his head and mumbled, “I can’t believe she took the money.”

“Me either man,” AJ said, walking towards him and patting him on the back. “It was a lot of money you know.”

“It was all about the money…”

“You don’t know that Train.” AJ leaned back against the wall and folded his arms. “How much longer you gonna let this go before you talk to her?”

Kevin ignored him and began finishing up what he needed to do. Bringing the headphones to his ears, he stopped when AJ cleared his throat.

“You know, she’ll be here tonight…”

Kevin snapped his head back, tossing the headphones back on the table. “What the hell did you just say?”

“I said she’s gonna be here tonight…Sarah invited her.”

He took a step back. “Why would she do that?” Kevin’s tone changed from angry to angrier… “Why would you let her do something like that?”

“What? Like I have any control over who she invites…gimme a break Kevin!” AJ unfolded his arms and stood up straight. When he turned around to walk away, he smiled to himself. This was exactly what needed to happen…a confrontation. “It’s not like you have to talk to her or anything.”

“Yeah right…then everyone will be asking me what’s going on.”

“Ah fuck Kevin,” he replied flatly. “Are you that stupid? No one’s gonna ask you anything…they already know what’s going on.”

Kevin took a few steps forward and grabbed AJ by the arm, twirling him around. “Who the fuck told them?”

“No one told them anything…apparently, you don’t give them enough credit Train. They’re not kids you know,” AJ huffed, snapping his arm away from Kevin’s hold. “Emma hasn’t been around for months now…how much more fucking obvious could it be?”

Kevin’s held fell towards the ground as he swore under his breath. “Does anyone know she filed for divorce?”

“I don’t know…I haven’t said anything about it,” AJ replied, patting Kevin on the arm. “You’d better hurry up down here, time’s ticking away.”

Chapter 116

The boys were due on stage in little less than thirty minutes now and Emma was worried about Kevin’s reaction. She refused to go back stage with Sarah; she didn’t want to cause problems. Instead, she sat in the pits, which is exactly where she didn’t want to be, and waited for the rest of the gang to meet her there.

If she‘d had her way…she would’ve been sitting with the rest of the fans in the venue. She didn’t belong in the pits anymore…

Leighanne was the first to show up, much to Emma’s dismay. Trying her best to hide her surprise, Leighanne made her way towards her. “Hi Emma.”

“Hello Leighanne.”

Leighanne sat down right next to her. “So, what brings you here?”

Thank God the venue was dark, Emma could roll her eyes then. “The guys, what else?”

“Does Kevin know you’re here?”

She lied, “Of course.” Honestly, she didn’t know whether or not Kevin knew. But, as sure as she was that the sun was going to rise in the morning…he’d find out sooner or later.

“Really? Hmmm…he didn’t say anything.”

Emma shrugged.

Leighanne turned her head towards Emma and lowered her voice. “So, what’s the deal with you two? You haven’t been around for a couple months now.”

“I’ve been in Arkansas, settling up my Aunt’s estate.” Total lie…obviously, if Kevin hadn’t filled them in yet on what was going on, she wasn’t about to either.

“Oh.” Leighanne didn’t buy that story at all. What estate? She knew herself that Betty didn’t have a pot to piss in.

Finally, Sarah walked into the pits and sat down next to Emma, whispering to her. “Kevin’s pretty upset about me asking you here.”

She winced. “I knew he would be…maybe I should just go,” she whispered back.

“Absolutely not…you’re my guest…you’re staying!” She smiled at Leighanne and then leaned over to whisper again, “Did Leighanne ask you like a thousand questions?”

“Yep.”

“Figured as much.”

When the boys finally came up on stage, Kevin did his best not to look down in the pits. He knew if he actually saw her, he’d probably end up screwing up his parts. He wasn’t about to let that happen, no way…no how. This was the last show and he was gonna give the fans a performance they wouldn’t forget.

Emma too…for that matter.

**********

When the show ended, all five of the guys grabbed hands and took a bow. It was during this time that Kevin finally looked down. Yep, just as he suspected…she made him nervous all right. Thank God the show was over. Smiling, he looked back into the audience and waived.

The girls were in total hysterics over the show. The crewmembers played a ton of pranks on them and it was funny as hell to watch. Ping-pong balls everywhere…the boys serenading the crew…Brian running across stage in only his boxers…it was a damn good show.

And it was probably to be the last one Emma would ever attend.

Getting up, Sarah pulled Emma close to her. “Stay with me, I’ll protect you back there.”

Emma pulled away. “Oh no…I’m not about to go backstage, no way in hell.”

“Ah come on…”

“I said no.”

“Hmph…fine then, I’ll get Sam and we’ll head back to the hotel and wait for them there. There’s a big party in the conference room at the hotel later…we’ll catch up with them there.”

Emma struggled to find the words, “Sarah…I filed for divorce.”

She turned around while waiving Sam down. “Yeah, I know.”

“You know?”

“Yeah, AJ told me. Don’t worry though, we’re the only ones that know anything about what’s going on.” When Sam walked over, she stopped talking to Emma. “Sam, let AJ know we’re gonna head back to the hotel and we’ll catch up with them there.”

Sam nodded, “Stay put, I’ll be right back.”

“Is Kevin really pissed at me?”

She shrugged. “AJ hasn’t been filling me in too much. I’m sure he’s not impressed. You don’t look it either for that matter.” She looked over at Leighanne and immediately shut up about the divorce situation. “Leighanne, we’re gonna head back now…you want to catch a ride with us?”

Leighanne nodded and walked towards the back of the stage. “Let me just tell Brian.”

Nick’s girlfriend, Savannah walked over to Emma. “Mind if I catch a ride with you too?”

Emma smiled. “Not at all…better let Nick know though.”

“Yeah…I’ll be right back.”

“Those too are awfully nosy…we gotta be careful we don’t talk to loud around them.” Sarah smiled, putting her arm around her friend’s shoulder. “So, you gonna tell me why you want out of the marriage?”

“I can’t really talk about it, but I think it’s the best thing to do.”

“God, when are you two gonna grow up and see this for what it really is?” Emma shrugged at her question, so Sarah elaborated further, “I don’t give a shit about how your marriage started out…it’s obvious, that over time, things changed between you two. When you guys gonna figure that out?”

Emma sighed, “Probably never Sarah.”

**********

The entire way back to the hotel, Emma was bombarded with question after question after question…coming from all directions. With her head bobbing in every direction, it was enough to make anyone sick.

“What’s going on with you two?”
“Are you leaving him?”
“Are you guys getting divorced?”
“Why haven’t you been around?”
“God doesn’t condone divorce, you know.”
“Are you seeing someone else?”

The last question hit a nerve. Emma immediately spoke up, “Absolutely not!”

Sarah glared at Leighanne and Savannah. “Come on guys, let’s lighten up a bit on Emma, okay? She came to party.” Turning to Emma, she smiled. “Didn’t you?”

Emma smiled back, not believing a single word she was going to say. “Yeah, I sure did.”

When Sarah and Emma got back to AJ’s room, they both collapsed on the bed, laughing. “God, I thought my head was going to explode if they asked you anymore questions!”

“No kidding…hopefully they got it all out of their system. I sure as hell don’t want to be asked that many questions all night.”

Sarah laughed even harder. “Honey…just wait until Nick, Howie and Brian start in on you…you’ll wish you were in the limo again.”

“Oh God,” she moaned, walking over to the refrigerator. “Mind?”

“Nope…as long as you give me one of what you’re having!”

For the next hour-n-half, they drank and drank and drank. They were both so tipsy; they could hardly stand up straight. And during the entire time they drank, they somehow managed to change clothes for the party.

Sarah was completely decked out in some fancy smancy dress that was about as low cut as you could get before you might as well not even bother. "AJ picked out that dress, didn't he?" Emma questioned.

Sarah smiled back at her friend. "Absolutely...and I should've had him pick out something for you as well," she moaned, eyeing Emma up and down. "You should be wearing something that Kevin would drool over...you know, make him realize what he's missing."

Emma looked down at her dress and frowned. It's true that it may have been a little on the conservative side, but it wasn't that bad. "I'm not here to make him drool."

"Bull shit," Sarah replied, laughing.

Looking in the mirror, Emma turned around to check out her back side. Even though the dress was ankle length and covering all her cleavage, there was a high slit in the back that traveled nearly up to her mid thigh. Didn't that count? "Oh well...next time," she mumbled while turning back around. “Oh man…do you think we should slow down with the alcohol for a while? I'm really starting to feel it.”

“I don’t know…should we?” Sarah asked, laughing. “I know I probably should…but in my opinion…you’ll need every ounce you can get down you.”

“Shit,” she mumbled. “Maybe I should just stay back.”

Sarah hit her on the arm. “No way.” Once she head the door to the room open, she swung her head back. “Uh-oh…AJ’s home!”

When AJ walked into the bedroom, he immediately went over to hug Emma. “Missed you babe.”

“You too AJ.”

He took a whiff of her breath and immediately stood back a few inches. “Damn girl, what’ve you been drinking?”

She shrugged and looked at the bottles on the nightstand. “Oh…just a couple of those.”

AJ laughed. “Are you sure only a couple?”

“Nope.”

He turned around to look at Sarah. “You too babe?”

“Yep.”

“Shit you guys,” he mumbled, laughing. “You girls didn’t make any phone sex calls…did you?”

Emma laughed, looking over at Sarah. “Damn…now why didn’t we think of that?”

“Great…just what I need tonight,” AJ said. “Two drunk girls to take to the ball!”

“We are NOT drunk…just buzzed!” Sarah walked over to him and planted a kiss on his nose.

“Oh yeah…sure, just buzzed. Come on, the rest of the guys are waiting for you.” He grabbed hold of their arms and walked to the door. “Hang on gals…it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.”

Emma froze. AJ stopped and pulled her forward. “Come on now…you ain’t gonna chicken out on me, are you?”

Chapter 117

When they walked into the conference room, Emma stopped dead in her tracks and took it all in. The huge room was completely decorated in all black and blue. There were balloons, signs, streamers and people everywhere. Lunging her head forward, she gasped at how crowded the room was. “Oh my God…you guys have this many friends?”

AJ laughed and kept pulling her along. “It’s more than just friends honey…it’s crewmembers, dancers, managers, promoters…you know, our family away from home.” He stopped when he saw Howie walking up to them and turned to Emma. “The guys have been warned not to ask you about anything…thanks to me, so if they do…tell them to butt out. Don’t say anything that’s gonna piss Kevin off anymore than he already is…okay dear?”

Emma nodded. She’d better not say anything then…cause she was pretty tipsy. She smiled at Howie and pulled her arm free of AJ’s. “Don’t worry, I’ll be on my best behavior.”

When she met up with Howie, he hugged her. “Where you been kid? We’ve missed you.”

“Around.”

He smiled at her. “Okay, I won’t ask. I’ve been warned.” He grabbed her hand and walked her over to the bar. “You want a drink?”

“Ah…sure, whatever you’re having is fine,” she said while her eyes made their way around the room. No sign of Kevin…that was a good thing.

Howie smiled and handed her a drink. He mimicked her actions, looking all around the room as well. “Kevin should be around here somewhere.”

She stepped back and looked at him. “That’s okay…I’ll catch up with him later.”

“You sure?”

Emma began walking away. “Yeah, I’m sure. Thanks for the drink.” When she made it all the way over to the dance floor, she stood still. She looked all around her again and started to feel very uncomfortable. She didn’t recognize a single soul. Desperately, she began searching faces for anyone who even looked the slightest bit familiar.

Nothing.

When she twirled around for the second time, she was face to face with some big, tall stranger…also someone she didn’t know. Big surprise there. “Hi.”

He smiled at her. “Hi, looking for someone?”

She lied, “No.”

“Good, wanna dance?”

Emma fidgeted underneath his stare. “I…uh…I…don’t even know you.”

He laughed and held out his hand. “Name’s Frank.”

Emma shook his hand. “Emma.”

“Nice to meet you Emma.” He smiled at her and winked. “You wanna dance now?”

She put her drink down on the nearest available table and shrugged. Why the hell not? At least it was something to preoccupy her time. “Sure…why not.”

When they got out on the dance floor, there was barely any room to move. It was jam-packed with people. Starting to feel uncomfortable again, she looked up at Frank and noticed that he was looking right back at her. “You okay?”

Again, she lied, “Yeah.”

He leaned over her to yell in her ear…there really wasn’t any other option, the music was too loud. “So, how’d you get invited?”

“AJ’s girlfriend Sarah invited me! How about you?”

“My sister’s a dancer on the tour…she brought me.”

“Cool.”

They both smiled at each other and went back to dancing. When the music finally slowed down somewhat, Frank asked her if she wanted to continue dancing.

“Sure,” she said, not really wanting to go back and stand in a crowded room full of people…alone.

Frank put his arms around her waist and instinctively, she put hers around his neck. She felt awfully funny about doing that…but the dance floor was crowded so she was pretty sure they’d be safe from any curious eyes.

She was dead wrong.

Kevin spotted her almost immediately. He noticed her when she first walked into the room and followed her with his eyes ever since. He did lose track of her, though only for a couple minutes, when one of the dancers starting making a pass at him. At first, he rebuffed her…but now, he was having second thoughts.

“Hey Julie!”

She turned around. “Yeah?”

“Does that offer still stand?” he asked, cocking his head to the side.

She smiled, walking over to him. “Sure…let’s go.” Together they headed for the dance floor, hand in hand.

Julie was in heaven…literally. Kevin felt like he was in hell…figuratively. He knew what he was doing probably wasn’t a good idea. He knew right from the beginning of the tour that this Julie had a crush on him.

He could tell from day one of the rehearsals. And after about two weeks of being paired up with her, he pulled Fatima aside and asked her to get him a new dance partner. He didn’t want to start the tour off on a bad start, so he had to insist on it. Fatima wasn’t too impressed, but she obliged when Kevin cited his new bride wouldn’t be real happy if she didn’t make it happen.

Now, here he was…moments away from giving Julie the wrong impression. What the hell was wrong with him?

Right before they were to actually step unto the dance floor though, Kevin decided that he needed to be upfront with her. “Julie, you know I’m married right?”

She sighed, frowning. “Of course, who doesn’t?”

“Just checking, that’s all.”

“I haven’t seen your wife in a couple months though…” She trailed off when Kevin interrupted her.

“That doesn’t mean that I’m not married.”

“I know Kevin…it’s just a dance.” She pulled him on the dance floor and immediately placed her hands around his neck. She closed her eyes and fell into the groove of the music almost instantly. Together, their bodies moved in complete unison with one another, never missing a beat.

During the second slow song, Kevin started to inch his way closer to Emma. He wanted her to see him. What he didn’t expect was to see her looking the way she did. Her face was flush and her eyes looked glazed over. Instantly, he could that she was drunk.

Slowly, he moved closer to get a better look. And when he did, he saw the man she was dancing with reach for Emma’s face and gently bring it up so that she was looking at him. It was like Kevin was watching a movie in slow motion.

A movie he despised.

When he saw Emma nod, he practically threw Julie to the floor. “Hey Kevin! What’s…” Julie stopped yelling when she saw Emma there. “Damn it!”

Kevin didn’t waste any time…he marched right up to them and cleared his throat, “Excuse me…”

Frank held up his hand. “Not now!”

He cleared his throat again.

“I said not now!”

When Emma opened her eyes and peeked out the side of them, she gasped. Frank stepped back when he felt Kevin’s hand hit him on the arm. “WHAT? Can’t you see we’re busy here?”

Kevin didn’t even bother to look Frank’s way. His eyes were glued to Emma. “I’d like to have a word with my wife if you wouldn’t mind.”

Frank backed off quickly, throwing his hands up in the air. “Sorry man…she didn’t tell me she was married.”

Kevin immediately grabbed her arm and started to pull her off the dance floor. “Nice show Emma.”

She didn’t say a word.

When he dragged her past AJ, he yelled for Kevin to stop. Turning around, he peered at his friend. “What AJ?”

“She’s drunk.”

“Yeah…no shit Sherlock!” He started to walk away again.

“Kevin!”

He stopped again. “WHAT?”

“Take it easy man…you have about thirty pairs of eyes on you right now.”
