Chapter 109

Kevin was set to leave for Texas that evening to see AJ. He needed to talk to him and see how he was doing; make sure he was on his way to making things better for himself. And to reassure him that he, along with the other guys, were willing to wait it out…no matter how long it took. He wanted to make sure that AJ knew that…knew that he had the support of not only his friends and family…but the fans as well.

Kevin was busy packing his bags when Emma came into the room with the most god-awful clothes on. Opening his eyes as wide as he could, he shook his head. “Nice choice Em. Please tell me you’re not going out in public like that.”

“Be serious. I’m gonna paint.”

Kevin stopped packing momentarily and dropped his shirt on the bed. “What’d ya mean you’re gonna paint. Paint what?”

“The guest room. Your mom doesn’t even like that awful color so I went out early this morning and picked up some paint.”

His eyes grew even wider. "What's so awful about beige? Beige is a neutral color...beige is beautiful."

"Beige is boring Kevin."

“Wait a minute...did you say that you drove to the store?

“Yes, why?”

“And you made it back alive?”

Alright. That did it. Enough wise cracks about her driving; enough is enough. She marched over to him and stood right in front of him. “Listen wise guy, I’m not that bad of a driver. And don’t worry about me going to the store alone. I went early enough this morning so that there wouldn’t be many people there, that’s why they have 24-hour service at Walmart.”

He rolled his eyes at her. “Next time tell me when you decide to shop in the middle of the night.”

“Oh like you’d notice. You were two sheets to the wind.” She marched into the bathroom and started slamming bathroom cupboard doors shut, making a loud ruckus. “Oh and by the way…I picked up an application while I was there too.”

Kevin marched in after her. “You’d better be kidding,” he huffed while flinching every time she slammed another door closed. “What the hell are you looking for?”

“Old sheets of some sort,” she replied while standing up. “You know…drop cloths, anything to protect the carpet from any paint spills.”

He mumbled something under his breath and walked out. “Have you ever painted before?”

“Nope. First time for everything though, right?” she asked sweetly, slamming the bathroom door shut.

“Great…wonderful!” he yelled while shaking his head in disgust. “Why don’t I just hire someone to paint it?”

Emma opened the door again and stuck her head in the room. “Do you like just throwing away your hard earned money?”

“I don’t think of it as throwing my money away.” Taking a few strides, Kevin stood directly in front of her. “Besides, do you even have all the things you need?”

Emma huffed and walked right past him. “Everything except old sheets…I know I saw them around here somewhere.”

Kevin stood there shaking his head. When his wife was determined to do something, she was gonna do it come hell or high water. “And just what color are you going to paint it?”

“Pink.”

When she heard his tone, Emma stopped and turned around quickly. His face was flush, most likely from his blood pressure rising. “Why pink? That’s a guest room…it should be a neutral color. We have guests that are both female and male.”

“Yeah well, mostly female.” Smiling at him, she threw her hands up in the air. “Besides…your mom is really the only one that uses that room and she wants pink. So, pink it is then.”

He retreated back to the packing, mimicking her in a high-pitched voice. “So pink it is.”

Kevin continued packing for a few more minutes and then finally decided that he should probably get her what she needed…or he could very well have pink carpeting that would match the pink walls. He walked through the bathroom and into Emma’s old room. He knew exactly where there were old sheets, blankets and such…under the bed. Crouching down on his knees, he dropped his head to the floor. Pulling the blankets out, one by one, his hand came in contact with some sort of box. Pulling it out from under the bed, he sat up and stared at it.

“What the hell is this?”

He stared at the old, worn out metal box for nearly two minutes before opening it. Once he did, he stared at the contents for another two minutes before reaching in. Pulling the paper work off the top, he saw the videotape and pictures lying on the bottom. They were just laying there, no envelope…no anything…to cover up his embarrassment. With trembling hands, he held the videotape up and saw that it was marked Kevin on the top.

Kevin almost passed out from the reality of it all.
And the reality of it all set in fairly quickly.
He had seen those pictures before…only once…but he knew exactly what the reality of it meant…

Was he now in possession of what Lou once had? He breathed a huge sigh of relief and then suddenly, anger washed over him. What the hell was Emma doing with these items under her bed?

Glancing through the paperwork thoroughly, he knew that this box belonged to Emma. There were items in there with her handwriting on them…a definite sign that this box belonged to her. He stared at the paperwork that was laid out on the floor in front of him, in black and white. He felt sick to his stomach when he opened the documents containing Emma’s parent’s life insurance policies. There they were…totaling $500,000.

He had to do a double take…$500,000? She told him that they totaled only $100,000. That was a big discrepancy.

Shutting his eyes for a moment, Kevin was trying to regain his composure. He was trying to keep his cool. Was she lying to him? He tried to recall their conversation back when they discussed her parent’s life insurance money….

He remembered her saying that she wasn’t sure about the amount…after all; she was only 12/13 years old when her parents died. But still…

Did she lie to me then? Opening his eyes, he shook his head – why would she lie?

Why?
He could think of a hundred good reasons why. Maybe…she was in on this from the start or maybe…this was all just a game to her and Lou was going to cut her in on the deal. Why?

He sat there for quite some time…trying like hell to figure it all out. If she was in on this with Lou…why would she have the blackmail items this close to him? It didn’t make any sense.

Noticing a business card amongst the paperwork, he reached over and grabbed it. “Attorney-at-law Luke Carden,” he mumbled under his breath. Why would she need an attorney?

Grabbing the bank statement from the pile, he tore it open and his eyes immediately shot down to the remaining balance. Kevin closed his eyes, hard and reopened them again; his hands shaking uncontrollably. He had to place the statement on the floor so that he could read it…$24,000.00 and some odd change left.

Only $24,000.00 dollars left…out of $500,000? She went through all that money?

His mind wandered back to his original thought…maybe she was being cut in on this deal after all…by all practical accounts, she was broke. By not having her sign a pre-nup, she would be entitled to a hell of a lot of money after the two years were up. The thought of her actually being in on the whole thing…just for his money…sickened him.

Was all this just a game to her?

How long had this box been right under his nose? From the start?
He was only feet from this box all this time…and never even knew it. This didn’t make any sense. No sense at all.

“KEVIN!”

Kevin heard her yelling, but he couldn’t respond.

“KEVIN!”

He ignored her yet again, trying to drown out her screams with his own silent ones.

“KEVIN!”

Oh God, he couldn’t take her yelling anymore….his head felt like it was going to explode. Reaching up, he grabbed his head and squeezed it. “I’M IN YOUR OLD ROOM!”

Emma walked in with her back to him, dragging an old blanket with her. “I found this in the linen closet…it looks pretty beat up, is it okay to use?”

When he didn’t respond to her, she dropped the blanket. “Kevin? I’m talking to you…” Turning around, she said, “Hellllllooooo…what’re you doing…” She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw him sitting on the floor with the contents of Lou’s box sprawled out in front of him.

No words or glances were exchanged for over a minute…

When Kevin finally looked up at her, her heart stopped beating for a moment. Instantly, she could tell that he’d been crying. Emma fell to her knees while gathering up the paperwork. “Please…please let me explain.”

Complete and utter silence.

She inched closer to him, his hand flying out instantly to stop her. He obviously didn’t want her to come any closer to him. “Please…I can explain this whole thing.”

Still, complete and utter silence.

“Look, I was going to tell you about this…”

Kevin held up his hand again. He didn’t want to hear her try and explain anything. Not now – not ever.

In her heart, she knew at that exact moment…it was over. Everything was over. Their marriage…his trust…her dream…her life…over… Dropping her head to the floor, Emma started crying. “Please Kevin…just g-give me a chance to explain.”

“I want you out of here.”

Emma slowly stood up; afraid that if she didn’t…things would get worse. “Out of this bedroom?”

Kevin spoke sternly and with no emotion whatsoever, “Out of this house.”

She froze. What? Out of the house? Where would she go? She had no place to go. She knew nobody really, except Backstreet people. And once Kevin told them about this, they were sure to shun her too.

Kevin looked up at her. “I want you gone by the time I get back from Texas.”

She rushed through her next sentence quickly so that he wouldn’t cut her off. “God, please Kevin. I was going to tell you about this, you gotta believe that. I was just waiting for the right time.”

He grabbed all the items and threw them back in the box. Standing up, he held on to the box and walked right past her, not even so much as glancing in her direction. “And when was the right time going to be Emma? When the two years were up?”

Her heart sank as she gasped. “God no. I wasn’t going to wait that long…”

He stopped on his way out and turned around abruptly. “Just tell me one thing.”

She could barely speak; her lungs felt like they were collapsing right then and there as she squeaked out, “What?”

When she looked into his eyes, she wanted to die. They were cold…squinty…glassy…and it scared her. It was over…there was no question about it now…over.

“Was everything you told me a lie…like the way you told me you felt about me?”

She shook her head. “God no Kevin, you gotta believe that.”

“Honestly, I don’t know what to believe.” Holding the box in his hand, he turned back around to leave. “Does Lou have copies of this stuff?”

“No…everything that he…had…is…is…in that box.”

When he turned around again, Emma shuddered at the sight of his face. “Is this why you kept going back to Arkansas all the time?”

Slowly, she nodded.

“So…you lied about the offers on the house, you lied about where you were, you lied about this box and yet you want me to believe that you didn’t lie about your feelings…” Kevin didn’t even give her a chance to respond…he turned around and walked through the bathroom to their room, slamming the door so hard that Emma heard something crack and then heard something crash to the floor.

Closing her eyes, she cursed herself over and over again. She should’ve known better than to do this…she should’ve just told him…sobbing, she collapsed on the floor.

Chapter 110

For the remainder of the time that Kevin was home before catching his flight, he spent it alone and in his room…lying on the bed and analyzing the hell out of something that didn’t make any sense to him. And after an entire hour of analyzing, he was still confused and mad as hell. Mad at himself for what happened all those years ago, mad at Denise for letting it happen, mad at Lou for being the type of man that he was and just plain mad at Emma for everything.

Grabbing his bags, he left the security of his room and headed for the front door; making a quick detour to the garage. He shut the door to the garage and immediately headed over to his tool chest, where he emptied out the contents of the metal box and then placed it down on the floor. It only took him a second to pull out the right drawer of the chest…and only two seconds to grab the hammer.

Then, he proceeded to do what any other sane man, who’d virtually been under someone else’s hold for almost decade, would do. He beat the living shit out of the box and tape. And didn’t stop until the tape was completely destroyed and smashed into smithereens.

Standing back to admire his handy work, Kevin grabbed hold of the paperwork and pictures that were once inside the metal box, and walked back into the house. He headed straight to the back patio and directly over to the ceramic fire pit. Grabbing the lighter from the grill, he placed the paperwork and pictures inside the pit and set them on fire, watching them burn.

And he didn’t move until every last flame had squelched; he wanted to make good and sure that every piece of evidence was gone. Gone. Watching the last of the flames flicker, Kevin stepped back and took a deep breath. It was over. After almost a decade of having to watch his every move, it was finally over.

The feeling of relief didn’t take hold of him however; instead, he felt exactly the same way he had earlier in his room…mad.

Turning around, he grabbed his bags and headed around the outside of the house and back to the garage. It was time to take back control of his life, set things straight and the time was now.

**********

Once Kevin arrived at the rehab center, he was led directly to the secluded and heavily guarded outdoor patio along the back of the grounds. The guards weren’t there to necessarily keep the houseguests in; they were there mainly to keep unwanted visitors out. This was a highly acclaimed rehab center; one notoriously known for their elite clientele and AJ was no exception.

Walking over to the man of the hour, Kevin smiled at him.

“Hey man, glad you could make it,” AJ said, standing to his feet and pulling his friend into an embrace.

“Glad to be here.”

Sitting down, they both just sat in silence…each engaged in their own private thoughts, but never removing their eyes from each other. It was AJ who finally made the first attempt at speaking. “You look like shit…what’s going on?”

Kevin blew a laugh out his nose. “Gee…thanks a lot.” He smiled at his friend, eyeing him up and down. “You look good – do you feel as good as you look?”

AJ glanced around him. “I feel great. This place is great. Look at it – no one gives a shit who you are in here. Hell, I ran past Robert Downey Jr. the other day even.”

Kevin laughed and leaned forward, resting his arms on the glass tabletop of the patio furniture. “I think he frequents this place a little more than the usual.”

“Yeah, but don’t let him hear you say that.” AJ got up from his seat and patted Kevin on the shoulder. “What can I get you to drink?”

“Water is fine,” he replied while glancing around, taking advantage of the few minutes he had alone. The place looked great, just like AJ said. The grounds were beautiful and everyone, at least the ones he could see, looked to be at peace with the world. You’d never know that each one of them was somehow struggling with the some of the same demons as AJ. He could see why AJ liked this place, and laughed to himself as he wondered if he could rent a room for a week or two to sort through his shit as well.

“What’s so funny?” AJ questioned, returning with their waters.

“Just thinking,” Kevin replied while taking his water. “Thanks.”

AJ dropped to his seat and sighed. “So, what’s everyone been up to?”

Kevin shrugged while taking a drink. “Nothing much…just hanging out, waiting for you.”

“Yeah, I’m not sure whether you’ve heard through management or not, but I signed to stay on for three more weeks. I need some more…”

Kevin lifted his hands to stop AJ. “No problem. We’ll wait for you as long as it takes Bone. We don’t want you to rush back. Your health is way more important then any of the other bullshit.”

“Thanks man.” AJ lit his cigarette and exhaled slowly. “So…how’s Emma?”

No answer.

AJ looked over at Kevin and wondered whether or not he heard him. When he saw the look on his face, he knew he’d had. Exhaling, AJ let the silence linger for only a few more seconds. “Train, you wanna tell me what’s going on?”

Kevin got up and immediately started to pace. “I can’t talk about it.”

“You two having problems?”

“Didn't I just say I couldn’t talk about it?” Kevin growled back, his expression even more grim then his tone.

AJ sat back and brought his foot up to the seat of his chair. Taking another hit of his cigarette, he tilted his head and stared at his friend. “Can’t or won’t?”

Kevin sat back down, defeated. “I’m pretty sure it’s over.”

AJ lunged forward, his foot flying off the seat of his chair, crashing into the table. Grabbing hold of the table, he swore under his breath. “What?”

Kevin turned away, staring off into the grounds. “She’s packing her bags as we speak.”

AJ slouched back down in his seat, confused. This was not what he needed to hear now. Sarah was going to be devastated beyond belief and well…quite honestly, he was going to be devastated as well. He really genuinely liked Emma… Disgusted, he said, “You kicked her out?”

With his head still turned, Kevin grunted, “Kind of.”

AJ lunged even further forward, demanding that Kevin look at him. “What’d ya mean – kind of? It’s either yes or no. You kicked her out, didn’t you?” He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. The Kevin he knew would never do something like that – never. “Jesus Kevin…are you doing drugs?”

Taking a drink of water, Kevin choked on it after hearing AJ’s question. Looking over at his friend, he shook his head. “Absolutely not.”

“Then what the hell do you mean you kicked her out?” AJ reached over to grab his pack of smokes on the table. “You know she has no place to go, except Lou’s and who the hell would want to go there?”

Kevin sat back and let his mind wander. He really wasn’t in the mood for getting a lecture. Not from AJ and definitely not his mother, which was sure to follow in the days ahead. That was one person he was going to try and keep this from for as long as he could. His mother was going to be heartbroken.

On second thought, maybe that wasn’t such a smart move. If this leaked out, his mother would be sure to find out and that would be much worse, considering how she found out about the wedding.

“AJ, I’m not telling anyone else for now. I don’t want this to leak out until we officially decide what to do.” Taking a deep breath, he mumbled under his breath, “My mom is going to flip.”

“Hey, no problem. I respect that. What I don’t respect is that you kicked her out of the only home she has. For crying out loud Train, what the hell where you thinking?”

“She can go back to Arkansas,” Kevin replied flatly. “The house didn’t sell yet.”

“God, I can’t believe how blasé you sound about this whole thing – like it’s no big deal.” Dropping his fist on the table, he blew out a loud breath. “Dammit Kevin, what the hell happened between you two?”

Kevin sighed and looked at his friend. AJ wasn’t going to let up until he fed him some story to appease him. “She kept something from me and well…” He took a deep, long breath. “I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to get past it.”

AJ rolled his eyes. “It can’t be that bad.”

Kevin raised his eyebrows, along with his voice. “It is that bad.”

AJ mumbled “shit” under his breath and put out his cigarette. “You’ve never kept something from anyone before?”

Kevin winced. Why was he asking him that? Everyone has kept something from someone at some point in his or her lives. “Yes, but that was different.”

AJ smirked; obviously pleased with the answer he’d just heard. “Oh, how so?”

“I’m not gonna defend my actions to you Bone. I did what I needed to do,” Kevin said sharply, annoyed with AJ’s disapproval. “You won’t understand so let’s drop it.”

“Why won’t I understand?”

Kevin put his elbows on the table and dropped his head into his hands. “I didn’t mean it that way. Listen, you got enough shit on your plate to worry about now.”

AJ cleared his throat and kept silent until Kevin looked up and directly in his eyes. Shaking his head prominently, his words were clear and to the point. “Don’t do this Kevin.”

Kevin dropped his head again.

“I mean it Kevin, don’t let her go.”

Silence.

“In the beginning I would’ve said something differently then what I’m about to say now, but don’t let this one go. She’s a keeper and you know it.” AJ lit another cigarette while Kevin remained silent. "How your marriage all came together is none of anyone's business and I know I didn't approve...but she's grown on me and it’s so obvious how much you two love each other. She walks out and you’re gonna be regretting it for the rest of your life.”

Kevin looked up at him. How obvious they love each other? It was all a put-on and even one of his closest friends, who knew him better than anyone else…fell for it. Damn, I am pretty good. Maybe acting was something he should be looking into for the future.

It was all an act AJ…couldn’t you even tell?

Kevin wasn’t sure if Emma lied to him or just kept something from him. He didn’t give her a chance to explain. Of course, that might have been a lie too, so who’s to say? Either way, it didn’t matter now, he kicked her out and by the time he would be home…she’d be gone. Out of his life. “Yeah, well…obviously we don’t love each other enough.”

AJ watched Kevin closely; “I don’t believe that for one minute. But hey, like you said…it’s your problem.” AJ shrugged, throwing his arms up in the air. “You deal with it the way you want to.”

“So, you talk to Sarah lately?”

AJ laughed. “Want to change the subject do we?”

Kevin nodded.

“Yeah, talked to her yesterday actually.”

**********

Kevin flew home the following day, even though he wasn’t due back until the following morning. He was bored and being that he was alone, all he did was sit around the hotel room and analyze. It wasn’t a good situation for him and he realized that immediately. He needed to get back to his home, get back to his life and get back to taking control.

When he pulled into the driveway, his heart sank. He wondered whether or not Emma would still be there. Opening the door to the garage, his heart sank even further when he noticed her car. She hadn’t left yet.

Kevin took his time getting out of the truck, deliberately trying to stall the inevitable. Opening the door to the house, he walked in slowly and quickly noticed how quiet the house was. Maybe she was gone after all. Grabbing the phone, he checked his voice mail while walking into the living room and stopped dead in his tracks when he noticed Emma lying down on the couch.

He turned to walk back into the kitchen, ignoring her altogether. After listening to his messages, he returned three of the calls that needed to be returned while sitting at the kitchen table. Once he was finished with that, he slammed the phone down on the table.

“You’re early,” Emma said quietly while standing behind him.

The sound of her voice took him by surprise… he thought she was asleep.

“I’ll be out of here tonight, don’t worry. My flight leaves in like four hours.”

Kevin jumped up from his seat, nodding. Heading towards his studio, he stopped when her comment repeated itself in his head. Flight? “Your flight?”

“Yeah, my flight.”

He turned around. “You aren’t driving to wherever it is you’re going?”

“No…and I’m heading back to Arkansas for now,” she replied while looking at her feet.

“Fine,” he huffed while turning back around to head towards the studio. “I’ll have your car shipped to you.”

“I don’t want the car,” Emma said softly, but loud enough for him to hear.

Kevin stopped. He didn’t want to start this shit now. She was taking the car, period. Without turning around, he replied, “I don’t want the car either…so what do you suggest we do with it? Sell it?”

“Go ahead, sell it. I’m not taking it.”

He turned around abruptly and marched towards her, his blood pressure rising with every step. “Yes you are. It’s your friggin’ car, it has your name on the title and you’re responsible for it.”

Emma finally looked up at him. “Please, will you just let me explain?”

Kevin looked at her with such intensity; his eyes were starting to burn. Her eyes were begging him to give her a chance, but he wasn’t willing to risk it. He didn’t want to fall into any trap and at this point, he wasn’t convinced that she’d be telling him the truth anyway. He stared her down until finally she closed her eyes, allowing him to close his as well and relieve the strain.

“Fine, I’ll cancel my flight and take the car.”

**********

Emma was at a loss. She needed directions on how to get to Arkansas, so she called the only person she could think of, Sarah. She had no choice but to lie to her, she wasn’t sure whether Kevin wanted anyone knowing what was going on in his personal life, however non-personal it actually was.

Another lie told…another lie made…was it ever going to end?

“Why don’t you just fly Emma?”

She sighed and took a deep breath. “Fly? Now? I’m licensed Sarah…I’ve wanted to be able to drive for so long now…so I just thought it would be fun to drive there instead.”

“Hey, feel like some company? I don’t have anything going on for a while.”

Emma’s head dropped to the bed. How would she be able to get out of this without coming clean? “Well,” she replied slowly. “Maybe next time…I don’t know how long I’m gonna be there and everything…and I just really need to be alone right now.”

“Is everything alright Em? You don’t sound like yourself?”

“Yeah,” she lied, again. “Everything’s fine.”

Sarah gave her the number to AAA and told her to call in the morning. They could map out her entire route for her, leaving out no details. Her only problem now was what she would do for money during the interim of traveling to Arkansas. Once she got there, she could use the money that was left in her account until she was able to find a job…getting there was the real problem.

Packing the last of her clothes into the boxes, Emma threw her purse onto the bed and opened it. Slowly, she removed the checkbook and placed it on the dresser, along with the house keys. She stood there for quite a while, just staring at the items that only yesterday, were hers. Refusing to let herself cry, she made her way over to the bed and grabbed the first box.

Packing the last of her bags and boxes in the trunk, she noticed Kevin sitting on the porch swing. When she walked up to him, she started to tremble. Emma really didn’t want to cause any further tension by bringing up the money issue, but she had no choice.

She spoke quietly when she was close enough for him to hear her, “Kevin?”

“Yeah?”

“I hate to bring this up now, but I’ll be needing some money until I get to Arkansas where I can tap into my account,” she meekly admitted.

“I’ve already thought about that. Just use your credit card and don’t worry about it.” He jumped up off the swing. “I’ll cancel it next week sometime…that should give you enough time.”

“Okay, thanks,” she replied quietly, turning to leave. “I’m gonna pay you back for everything.” Emma stopped and turned to look at him. “I really am.”

Kevin shook his head, obviously not believing a word that she was saying. “Whatever.” When he turned around and reached the door to the house, he stopped. “I’ll have whatever you couldn’t fit in the car shipped to the farmhouse and if you wouldn't mind...I'd rather you just kept quiet about this for now...we don't need anymore front page news around here.”

Emma held back the tears for as long as she could, but there was no use in even trying now. They wouldn’t be stopped for anything. “I’m sorry, about everything.”

"I'll need the house keys back," he said before walking into the house.

Sighing, Emma turned away and headed towards her car. "The keys and checkbook are on your dresser."

Chapter 111

True to his word, Kevin left the credit card open for her to use. Emma only had to use it a handful of times, and mainly for gas and some food here and there…but it was the thought that counted. And as soon as she had her feet planted on Arkansas ground, she cut the credit card up and tossed it in the trash. It wasn’t the first step towards realizing it was over, not by a long shot, she’d realized that from the moment he looked up at her when she walked into her old bedroom, almost seven weeks ago…but it was definitely another step towards it sinking in.

Making her way into Aunt Bet’s old bedroom and what could barely be described as her bedroom now, she walked over to where her suitcases where piled up and stashed in the corner. Seeing the videotape out of the corner of her eye, she grabbed it. Her first reaction was to toss it in the trash…along with the tee-shirt Kevin had given her for her birthday, but she didn’t. It was the tape of Lou, where he admitted to using her money, and she didn’t want to take any chances of getting rid of it yet. Luckily, she’d held on to that particular tape, not storing it in the metal box with the other items.

Instead, she’d stored it along with a copy of her bank statements, in her underwear drawer back at Kevin’s place…and thankfully, she had or else she would’ve been left with nothing. Nothing to use against Lou, incase of retaliation on his part and nothing to show the bank when she went to make her first withdrawal out of the only money she had to her name.

Changing out of her raggedy old sweatpants and sweatshirt, Emma stopped and looked at herself in the mirror. Even though it had only been a mere seven weeks, she couldn’t help but notice the change. She looked like a shell of her former self. A mere shell. She didn’t smile, she didn’t laugh and she sure as hell didn’t bother to even brush her hair or put on makeup. What was the point?

Her eyes traveled down to her breasts and the bra that was holding them in place. It wasn’t one of her beautiful ones that Kevin had purchased for her, not at all. Instead, it was that nursing bra…that damn nursing bra that he loved so much. And now she wanted nothing more to do with it. Unhooking it hastily, she removed it and threw it in the trash.

He didn’t even give her the chance to explain….
She needed to get on with her life…

Emma had been job-hunting the entire seven weeks that had just passed, but so far…no luck. A couple times, she talked with Sarah to catch up on AJ’s progress. No matter what the future held for them, as a couple…she cared about each and every one of her former friends. Former…thinking about that depressed her even more.

Sarah never once asked her why she wasn’t with them on tour or when she was coming back, which led Emma to believe that Kevin had filled them in on all the details. Not wanting to cause any problems though, Emma kept quiet and never brought up the subject either.

The boys were already three concerts into their last one and half months of touring and Sarah sounded grateful that it would all soon be over and there would be down time. Emma smiled listening to Sarah tell her how much the fans were supporting the guys and especially AJ, citing that it was absolutely breathtaking on how much the fans cared.

Did anyone even realize how much she cared?

When Emma opened the front door, she started having second thoughts on whether or not this was the right thing to do. It felt right – but deep down, it hurt like hell. “Hi Luke, thanks for coming on such short notice.”

“No problem…what’s going on?”

She motioned for him to come in and offered him a drink. Bringing him a cup of coffee, Emma sat down at the kitchen table with him and handed him a check for the amount that she owed him for his services in the past.

“Thanks, but the house didn’t sell yet,” he said while staring at the check in his hand. “I can wait until then if you want.”

“No, take it.” She folded her hands in front of her and took a deep breath. “Did you bring the necessary paperwork for me to fill out in order to proceed with this divorce?”

Luke lifted his briefcase up off the floor and set in on the table. “I did…so I presume you still want to go through with this?”

Not really…but is there really any other choice? She nodded, slowly. “And please, I’m trying to keep this as quiet as possible…for Kevin’s sake.”

“I understand.” He took the papers from his briefcase and placed them down in front of him, running his hands along them. “I pretty much already filled out the main areas of the forms when you called me a couple weeks ago, so there really isn’t much to do besides fill out what you’re asking for and having you sign.”

Confused, Emma looked at him. “What’d you mean what I’m asking for? I told you already…I don’t want anything from Kevin.”

“Yes I know you did. But Emma, you’re entitled to something. You didn’t have a pre-nup or anything, so you must want something.”

She closed her eyes and rubbed her temples. His love…does that count? Or how about just a chance to explain? “No, I don’t want anything. I never wanted his money in the first place and I definitely don’t want it now.”

“Are you sure? He’s a very rich man.” Luke's emphases on his words didn’t go unnoticed.

“Okay, how about this then?” Emma smiled and pointed towards the paperwork. “He can pay for this divorce…the filing costs and your fees.”

Luke choked on his coffee. “That’s chump change to him.”

“I know…but at least it’s something,” she said, shrugging.

He shook his head. Emma was a stubborn one all right. He knew that from the first moment he laid eyes on her. Smirking, he laughed out loud filling out the portion of the form where she was to list what she wanted. FILING FEES AND ATTORNEY FEES.

“Unbelievable,” he whispered. Damn, this Kevin character was getting off Scott free. What a lucky son of a bitch. When Luke’s own wife filed for divorce, she wanted just about everything except his Goddamn underwear and he didn’t make half as much money as this Backstreet Boy.

“Okay, sign here,” he said, handing her the pen.

Emma did as she was told and then handed him the pen back. “I guess it’s really over.”

“It’s not over until Kevin agrees with your conditions, which I’m sure he will.” Luke rolled his eyes and let out a moan. “He’d be a fool not too and then once he signs and it goes before a judge, then it’s over my dear…really over.”

She walked him to the door and thanked him for coming. Closing the door behind him, she swore under her breath and plopped down on the couch…seconds later, the tears set in. I gotta stop this crying…get over it already and move on! Nothing lasts forever…

Eventually, she did stop crying…but not until she fell asleep from exhaustion.

They were only minutes away from show time when Kevin’s cell phone started ringing. Shit, he only had seven minutes until he was due on stage. Glancing at his phone, he immediately answered it once the phone number registered in his brain. It was his attorney, Ray.

“Hello.”

“Kevin – it’s Ray.”

“Yeah Ray?”

“Listen, I need to sit down and talk to you sometime tomorrow afternoon. Where you gonna be?”

Kevin laughed while looking around at his surroundings. Quite honestly, he didn’t even know where he was now. “On my bus more than likely…can I call you instead?”

“Well, not really…” Ray trailed. “I think we need to sit down for this one.”

Kevin noticed the concern in his voice and immediately began to worry. “What’s going on? Is something wrong?”

“You could say that.”

Kevin glanced at his watch again and swore. “Shit, this isn’t really a good time…I only got five minutes until I have to go…what’s going on?”

“Are you sitting down?” he attorney questioned.

“No…why?”

“Well, I think you’d better.”

“Fuck…I don’t have time to sit down Ray…what the hell is so important?”

Ray cleared his throat and sighed. “Well, I got a phone call today from an attorney in Arkansas…”

Kevin’s heart sank. Arkansas could only mean one thing – Emma. He interrupted him quickly, “Is something wrong with Emma?”

“Nothing physical…no.”

Kevin was growing more impatient as the seconds ticked by. “Spit it out Ray, I gotta cut this short.”

Ray’s tone became serious and straight to the point. “Emma filed for divorce Kevin.”

Kevin almost lost his balance when he heard the word divorce. Doing a complete 360, he searched the immediate area for anything to sit on. Ray was right; he should’ve sat down. Taking a few steps towards the couch, he plopped down. “Divorce?” he asked quietly.

“Yes, divorce. Did you know anything about this?” Ray questioned.

Kevin’s tone remained quiet as he ran a hand over his face. “Not a clue.”

“Listen, I know we talked about this back when you first got married, but you never really gave me a straight answer then.” Ray paused momentarily and then let out an audible, aggravated moan. “You had her sign a pre-nup, right?”

Silence.

“Kevin?”

“Yeah.”

“Did you hear me?” Ray asked.

“Yeah, I heard you,” he replied in a daze.

Ray repeated himself, slowly. “Well, did…you…have…her…sign…a…pre-nup?”

Kevin resisted the urge to scream at his attorney; instead, choosing to speak to him in the same demeaning manner. “No...I…did…not…have…her…sign…anything…of…the…sort.”

There were a few moments of silence before Ray spit out his next words. “Shit…okay listen, I’ll call you tomorrow and we can set up a place to meet in the next few days. I should have all the paperwork from her attorney by then.” He paused, blowing a breath out his nose. “Hang in there, you were only married for a short time, so…she can’t be demanding too much.”

Kevin didn’t want to hear anymore, he had to go on stage in less than one minute and somehow try and perform like this conversation never took place. How the hell was he supposed to do that? “Call me tomorrow,” he huffed, hanging up the phone before throwing it down on the couch and swearing under his breath.

**********

His performance sucked…
His performance reeked…
His performance was positively the worst he’d ever given.

Coming down off the platforms, AJ walked over to Kevin and patted him on the back. “Nice job out there tonight…”

“Fuck off.”

AJ stepped back. “Geesh…can’t even take a joke?”

Actually, AJ wasn’t joking at all, but he was trying to cover his tracks after seeing what kind of mood Kevin was in. And when Kevin was in one of his “moods”, everyone knew to back off. And AJ was no exception…only he wasn’t as easily “put off” by his moods and this time wasn’t any different.

“I fucked up royally,” Kevin said, heaving through a clenched jaw.

AJ had to smile at that admission. “Yeah…no kidding.”

Kevin’s growl didn’t go unnoticed by AJ, who followed him into his dressing room. “What the hell do you want?”

AJ slammed the door shut behind them. “For starters…calm down. It’s not like I have any right to judge your performance out there tonight. Hell, I’ve had a couple of those nights myself.”

Kevin sat down and looked up at AJ. “Well, what is it then?”

AJ sat down next to him. “Just thought maybe you needed to talk. What’s going on? You were fine right before we went on stage and then…BAM…the first song out there and you screwed up your moves…you never screw up…especially on the first set…what happened?”

“I screwed up.”

AJ moaned, lowering his head while still peering at his friend. “And?”

“Ray called right before we went on stage and told me that Emma filed for divorce.”

AJ raised his head and leaned back against the couch. “Ah shit man, that sucks.” He pulled his cigarettes out of his pocket and offered Kevin one.

“Shit, what the hell…”

AJ almost laughed out loud when Kevin actually took him up on his offer. It had to be pretty bad for him to actually smoke a cigarette. Handing his lighter over to Kevin, he shrugged. “What’re you gonna do about it?”

Kevin fought for a few moments with the lighter before AJ ripped it out of his hands. “They’re child-proof now…allow me.” Holding the lighter up to Kevin, he repeated his question. “What’re you gonna do about it?”

Kevin’s eyes narrowed. “Nothing I can do about it.”

“Bull shit Kevin…you can go after her.”

“I can’t do that.”

“And why not?” AJ genuinely questioned.

“Because that’s not my style,” Kevin simply said.

“Well,” AJ replied flatly. “Maybe you need to change your style.”

They both sat there in silence, smoking cigarette after cigarette after cigarette. A good thirty minutes had past where neither one said anything. Each one speechless as the reality of it all sank in.

It was a knock on the door that finally snapped them out of the shocked state they were both in. “Kev…how much longer you gonna be?” Carlos asked, opening the door and waiving his hand in front of his face. “Damn AJ…you need to cut that shit out.”

AJ laughed at the remark, rolling his eyes and waiving his hand in front of his face as well. “No shit…it’s about killing me too.”

“I need another half hour or so,” Kevin replied, frowning at the other men. When Carlos shut the door, he leaned over and looked sincerely to his friend. “Listen…I don’t want anyone to get wind of this yet. I can’t deal with the press now.”

AJ stood up to leave, offering his pack of smokes to Kevin, who refused them. “No problem. But, they’re gonna find out about it eventually…they always do. And as far as the rest of the guys go, you know they know something’s going on. I think they’re just too afraid to ask you about it. It’s only a matter of time before they start asking me,” he said, pointing a finger into his own chest. “You need to come clean with them too.”

Kevin put out the last of his cigarette, shaking his head back and forth. “I can’t forgive her man…I just can’t.”

AJ stopped and turned around. “You either gotta try Train or you gotta move on…”
