Chapter 46

The holidays flew by and both Kevin and Emma were happy to be home. They made a trip to Kentucky, a stop by Arkansas to visit Aunt Bet for a couple days, and then the whole Backstreet family met up in Georgia at Brian and Leighanne’s place for the last two days. It was a long, tiring trip but definitely one worth making.

Once home, Emma started preparing for her road test and the written test while Kevin resumed with rehearsals. The boys were scheduled to start their tour in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in exactly eight days when all hell broke loose….

Coming in late after a grueling day of rehearsals and a trip to the bar, Kevin dropped his duffel bag on the floor and walked into the great room. There, lying on the couch was Emma, face down and fast asleep. Her arm was dangling off the couch and the remote was on the floor directly beneath it. Hearing himself, he glanced at the TV and recognized the video right away. He laughed out loud at the site…Emma fell asleep while watching the Homecoming; Live in Orlando video.

“Same thing happens to me all the time wife…whenever insomnia strikes, I put in one of our videos,” he whispered out loud to no one in particular.

Emma stirred hearing his voice. She slightly opened her eyes, almost afraid to fully see the fury that might be standing before her.

She had already been warned about Kevin’s mood. Emma recalled her conversation with Nick who had called her just hours earlier…

“Hey Emma, it’s Nick.”

“Hi Nick. How are you?”

“I’m okay I guess, listen I just wanted to give you a heads up on Kevin before he gets home.”

“Oh, why?”

“He’s in a real pissy mood, if you know what I mean. Rehearsals didn’t go that great…AJ and I were kinda goofin’ off here and there and well that just kinda set his whole mood I’m afraid.”

Emma laughed, “Goofin’ huh?”

“Yeah,” Nick laughed. “Anyway, well to make matters worse…Jack stopped by to let Kevin know about the article.”

There was a long pause on both ends…Nick was waiting for a response from Emma. “Emma?”

She hesitated for a while…she didn’t know what Nick was talking about. “Nick, who’s Jack and what article?”

“Ah shit, you don’t know either?”

“Know what?”

“Jack is from our management company and the article is in the tabloids as of today.” Nick paused trying to catch his breath.

“What’d the article say Nick?”

“I don’t know if I should tell you…why don’t you wait until Kevin gets home and he can fill you in.”

“Oh no you don’t…don’t leave me to ask him. Please just tell me.”

“Well, apparently the headliners read something along the lines of…Separate Bedroom for the Backstreet Newlyweds…”

Emma silently whispered, “Carrie.” She paused briefly, “What does the article inside say?”

“I don’t know Em…Kevin told us that we’re not allowed to read it PERIOD. Those weren’t his exact words…I’m cleaning it up a bit here for your sake. Kevin did grab the tabloid out of Jack’s hand though…probably to bring it home. Listen Em, I gotta go…good luck!”

“Thanks for the warning Nick and please tell me…do you know what it says, I need to know.”

“What…are you nuts? Think I got a death wish or something? I ain’t never gonna know what that article says, neither will the other guys.”

**********

Emma could feel his presence. Lifting her head slowly, she whispered, “Hey Kevin…bad day?”

“What makes you say that?” It was obvious that he was trying to retain his cool.

“Oh I don’t know…just guessing.”

“You talk to one of the guys or something?”

No answer.

“Jesus, I told them to butt out,” Kevin started pacing the room. “Who called you?”

“Nick was just concerned that’s all,” she replied.

“Should have figured it’d be Nick…I’m gonna kick his ass tomorrow at rehearsals.”

“You are not, just leave him alone. He wanted to let me know about the article.”

Dead silence.

“That bad?” Emma questioned quietly while sitting up.

Kevin grabbed the remote from the floor and turned off the TV. Throwing the remote back to the ground, Emma sat back a little.

“Bad don’t even describe it.” Pacing the floors again, he was trying to gather his thoughts; the little buzz he had going on didn’t help the gathering process.

“You didn’t leave much out did you?” Kevin finally sat down on the love seat next to the couch.

“I didn’t tell her everything Kevin, honest. I don’t know the whole story anyway…I only told her that you and I have never had…”

“DON’T…I already know what the article says.” Kevin lowered his voice, “Sad part is, we can’t even do anything about it because it’s the god-damn truth.”

“I’m sorry Kevin…I didn’t know she would go repeating it.” Emma looked down, not able to even so much as glance at him.

“Not half as sorry as I am. Do you know what kind of predicament this puts me in?” Kevin raised his voice, “Do you?”

Emma quietly whispered, “No.”

“Speak up would you…I can’t hear you when you mumble.”

“I said no.”

“Well, things have gotta change around here and they gotta change fast. Your uncle will more than likely being calling here tomorrow…” Kevin trailed off.

“He’s already called, I didn’t pick up though.”

“Great…just great.” Kevin’s mood went from bad to worse.

“I’m sorry.”

“STOP SAYING THAT!”

“Do you think people are going to believe it?” Emma questioned.

“Honestly, I don’t know. Maybe, maybe not. We gotta think fast here and figure out what we’re gonna do about this.”

“Like what…make a statement or something?”

Kevin half-laughed and half yelled, “Hell no…but you’re gonna really have to play it up here…being the devoted wife and stuff.”

With disappointment written all over her face, she quietly responded. “I thought I was already doing that.”

“You’re coming on tour with us, no ifs, ands or buts about it. From start to finish…with maybe a few days off here and there.”

Emma’s shoulders slumped, “But what about my license?”

“It can wait.” He pointed towards the hall, “And tomorrow, we’re moving all your shit into my room too. From now on…we sleep in the same room, bed and all. And above all…keep your mouth shut!”

Getting up from the couch, he walked into his bedroom and slammed the door shut.

Chapter 47

The next morning, without so much as a single thought, Kevin grabbed the phone and dialed Lou’s number. He was trembling; Lou did this to him almost every time.

“Lou…its Kevin.”
“It’s none of your fucking business whether or not it’s true.”
“You don’t need to remind me…I’m quite aware of the consequences.”
“Fuck off. I’ll take care of it.”
“Trust me…it won’t ever happen again.”
“Yeah I’m sure.”

Kevin hung up the phone and promptly marched into Emma’s bedroom. Bending down, he slightly shook her, “Wake up sleepy head…we got a busy day ahead of us.”

Emma glanced over at the clock…6 AM. “I’m up, I’m up.” She sat up in bed and focused in on Kevin’s lack of clothing right away. He was only wearing a pair of boxer briefs; which left little to her imagination. “Yeah?”

“Let’s go…we need to start moving your shit into my room.” Kevin looked at her intently, “Now!”

“You can’t be serious…”

“You wanna bet?” Kevin put his hands on his hips now…staring her down.

“Not really,” she said while rubbing her eyes. “Where am I gonna put everything?”

“I’ve already emptied out one of my dressers for you and made some room for you in my closet. Whatever doesn’t fit there…leave it in here for now. Just get all your knick-knacks and personal junk out…it needs to be in my room now. Understood?”

“Yeah.” Emma waited until Kevin left her room before getting up from her bed. She couldn’t believe this was actually happening. She really didn’t think he was serious when he mentioned it the day before.

Evidently, he was serious now. She didn’t know what to expect…sleeping in the same bed as him was going to be tough. Emma silently wondered if she’d even be able to sleep at night with him so close.

Gathering her belongings wasn’t that difficult…she didn’t have much. Putting them in Kevin’s room was another story; there wasn’t much room for her things amongst his, despite his attempt to ‘make room.’

“What the hell is this anyway?” Kevin asked as he held up a foreign looking object.

“A jewelry box.”

“What?” He stared at it from different angles, “Are you sure? Doesn’t look like a jewelry box to me.” Kevin placed it back down on the dresser. “And it really doesn’t match my décor.”

“It’s a heirloom…from my mothers great-grandmother. It means a lot to me.” Emma grabbed her jewelry box and huffed, “Your décor doesn’t match MY jewelry box.”

Ignoring her slam, Kevin continued helping…bringing over the contents of her nightstand and placing them in her new nightstand, he stopped when he noticed her book.

Emma was busy hanging up her clothes in his closet, being careful where she placed everything when she heard him laugh.

Poking her head out from the closet, she asked, “What’s so funny?”

“Oh nothing…just looking at your gift from AJ here.” Pausing for a brief minute, he looked up at her and questioned, “Did you actually read this? The pages are bent over in the corners like you did.”

“Yeah, what’s it matter to you?” Emma returned to hanging up her clothes.

“It doesn’t…just curious that’s all.” Kevin decided to question her further. “Did it help?”

Emma paused to think about her answer. She decided that she was gonna play right along with him and really give him an earful.

“Hell yeah, it helped. It explains everything right down to the last detail. Helped a lot actually.”

Kevin’s breath started to get raspy. “Really?” He could feel himself becoming aroused at just the thought of her and this book, together, in bed. “How so?”

“Do you want details? I mean, it’s kinda personal don’t ya think?” Emma was smiling to herself.

“Well, you don’t have to tell me…but if want to, that’s okay too.”

Emma paused for a moment, “Sure, I’ll tell you. I mean, after all, you are my husband…right?”

“Right.” Kevin smiled wickedly.

“Well, it helped me get a little more comfortable with my body…knowing what each and every part does.”

“Go on.” Kevin could barely manage to get out.

“The pictures are pretty vivid…as you can tell I’m sure. Pin-pointed every little thing out and encouraged the reader to grab a mirror and do the same.”

“Did you…grab a mirror I mean?”

Now, Emma was getting embarrassed…if it weren’t for the wall separating them, she would never be able to discuss this with him. But as luck would have it, there was a wall and it made her feel less vulnerable. Besides, she actually had a few questions that weren’t answered in the book and this was a good time to ask them…when Kevin couldn’t see her face. It was almost as if she felt that Kevin wouldn’t know it was her asking the questions…which was totally untrue, but it helped nonetheless.

“Yeah.”

“Did you like what you saw?” Kevin’s hand started to rub on the outside of his boxer briefs.

“I guess.” Emma’s voice grew quieter.

“Go on…”

“Well, I did what the book told me to do.”

“Which was?” Kevin’s hand was now making its way under his boxer briefs…

“Pretty much touched myself where it told me to.”

“And how’d it feel?” Kevin was now lying back on the bed with his hand on his erection.

“I guess okay. I did exactly what the book told me…but I don’t think it worked really.”

“Why?” Kevin’s hand stopped moving. “You didn’t have…”

Emma interrupted him and replied so quietly that Kevin had to cup his ear, “Well, I’m not sure…I don’t really know…I think maybe I did, but I don’t know.”

“Emma, trust me…you would know. Do you wanna talk about it more?”

“Well, I do have some questions…but I don’t know if you’re the right person to ask.”

“Who else you gonna ask?” Kevin rolled over onto his stomach, now was not the time to think about his pleasure.

“Maybe Sarah…”

“Listen, I’m thinking that might not be a good idea with everything that’s going on right now…. if it makes you feel better, I could come into the closet with you.”

“GOD NO…don’t.”

“Okay.” Kevin was taken aback with her harshness. “Don’t be embarrassed Emma. Everyone does it…you’re just starting a little later than everyone else.”

Emma didn’t feel any better hearing Kevin last comment. Against her better judgment, she whispered, “Okay…you can come in here.”

Kevin got up from the bed, adjusted himself slightly and walked into the closet where Emma was sitting on the floor. He sat down in front of her and smiled, “Okay, what exactly do you wanna know?”

“Okay, I’ll ask you, promise me you won’t laugh though.”

Kevin lifted her chin up with his hand and shook his head, “Never.”

Chapter 48

When Kevin returned the next day from rehearsals, he was in a terrible mood. Sensing it right away, Emma kept her distance by puttering around the house and staying clear of him.

She had just sat down at the kitchen table when he stormed in and stood directly next to her, “Who called you this time?”

“I don’t know what you mean Kevin.”

“Like hell you don’t…I said who called you this time?”

“No one called…I haven’t had a single phone call today…check the caller id if you don’t believe me,” Emma huffed.

Kevin walked over to the phone and grabbed it in his hand. After he thoroughly checked, he shrugged. “Oh, sorry.”

“What’s your problem?” Emma questioned.

“Just about everything imaginable…there were reporters everywhere today outside of the rehearsal studio, asking everyone questions about us…including the other guys.”

“Oh God…” Emma raised her head slightly towards him, “Are they mad at me?”

“Their pissed at both us…and quite frankly I don’t blame them. They’ve always known that something was up and now this just confirms it.”

She looked at Kevin, “But Nick said that they weren’t gonna read it."

“They didn’t…but the reporters questions gave them a pretty good indication of what the article said.”

“I’m sorry about this whole mess.”

“Would you please STOP saying that…I know.”

“Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?”

Kevin pondered her question for a while, “Well, actually there is.”

Emma smiled, “Whatever it is…I’ll do it.”

His eyebrows shot up, “You sure?”

She nodded.

“How would you feel about us having sex?” Kevin bluntly asked.

“WHAT?” Emma jumped up from the chair almost knocking over her glass of water on the kitchen table.

Kevin jumped back from her a little, “For the guys sake, I mean.”

Emma couldn’t believe her ears, “WHAT?”

He stammered on, “This way, if we have sex, I won’t look guilty…like I’m hiding something from them and then I can honestly tell them that the article isn’t true.”

“But it is true…”

“For now it is,” Kevin shrugged his shoulders. “But if we have sex, it won’t be.”

Emma shook her head, “That’s insane Kevin.”

Kevin stepped closer to her and pulled her close. “I know…this whole marriage thing we got going on is insane…what have we got to lose?” He paused for a moment, “Except your virginity.”

She pulled back a little, “What makes you think I’m a virgin?”

He laughed and again pulled her close, “Are you serious?”

Emma could barely breathe with him being so close. This was insane…absolutely insane…and she was actually contemplating it…which was even more insane.

He saw fear in her eyes when he grabbed her shoulders and looked at her, “I’ll be gentle, I promise.”

Emma smiled at him and knew right then and there that this whole charade of a marriage was no longer a charade to her and it scared the hell out of her. “I don’t know Kevin.”

“I can teach you everything you need to know…” He started kissing her neck, “Come on Emma, you won’t be sorry…trust me.”

“I…don’t…know…” Emma could barely get out.

“Oh yes you do…you know you want to, you’re just afraid of finding out how much you might enjoy it.” Kevin watched her reaction intently, trying to read it. “I need to take a shower right now…care to join me?”

“In the shower?” Emma questioned nervously.

“Yeah, in the shower…come on.” He took her hand and led her into the bathroom. Shutting the door behind them, he walked into the shower and turned on the water.

Emma stood there frozen.

“Are you gonna take your clothes off or do you want me to do it?” Kevin questioned while stepping out of the shower.

“Can I keep them on?”

“If you want.” Rolling his eyes, he began removing his own clothing. Slowly, he took off his jeans and threw them aside. Emma couldn’t take her eyes off him and he knew it. Removing his shirt, she gasped slightly when he turned around and stood before her in only his boxer briefs. “You wanna do the honors?”

Emma shook her head.

“Okay, I’ll do it then.” Kevin finished removing the remaining item and stood before her naked. Stepping into the shower, he turned on the other faucet. “Come on in, I got yours going to.”

Emma couldn’t move. She didn’t know what to do. She looked at Kevin and then looked away for a brief moment. What the hell am I doing? Feeling his hand on her arm, she turned to him and felt herself being pulled into the shower.

She shrieked.

“Hey, you said you wanted to wear your clothes, didn’t you?” Kevin turned her around so that he was standing behind her. Snaking his arms around her, he pulled her in close. “Feel that Emma?” Slowly, he moved his hips a little so that she could feel him. “That’s for you.” Twirling her around, he took his hand and gently pushed her head down, “Look at what you do to me.”

Her only reply was a little moan.

“Lift up your arms,” he demanded.

"This is for the guys right?"

Kevin chuckled, "Absolutely."

Doing as she was told, Kevin pulled her shirt off her and reached behind her to unclasp her bra. He threw the bra over the shower door and whispered, “Doesn’t that feel better?”

Emma nodded.

“Thank God you’re not wearing jeans…they’d be a bitch to get off you wet.” He got on his knees and pulled her pants down, enticing her to lift one foot, then the other. He threw them over the shower door as well.

Emma finally found her voice, “You’re making a mess, throwing my wet clothes out there.”

Kevin was still on his knees and was only inches away from her most intimate area. “I don’t give a shit.” He was so close to her that she could feel his breath. Getting back on his feet, he continued, “All I care about right now is teaching you everything you want to know…here, give me your hand.”

Emma held out her hand and Kevin placed it in his, bringing it down to his erection. She gasped when she felt him harden even more when her hand was on him.

“Lesson number four wife, sex…. everything you want to know and now I’m gonna show you.” Kevin laughed and pulled her closer.
