Chapter 31

The flight to Kentucky was a little unpleasant for everyone involved. Kevin and Emma were barely speaking to each other while Brian and Leighanne were overcompensating for the quietness.

They had pretty much gotten away “fan free” on the flight; however, the airport was a different story. There were about thirty fans waiting there at the exact terminal they were boarding.

“Do fans show up everywhere these guys go?” Emma questioned Leighanne who was standing back away from the crowd.

“Always,” she sighed, “actually it’s a standing joke that there must be a leak somewhere within the organization because somehow they always know.”

Emma turned her attention towards an older female fan when she heard her yelling for Kevin. “Kevin…Kevin…can I get a picture of you and your wife?”

“Sure,” Kevin backed up and grabbed Emma by the arm, pulling her towards him. He noticed the distressed look on her face and whispered, “Try to smile.”

Some of the fans asked Emma to take their picture with Kevin, which she did happily. She could really see in Kevin’s eyes the amount of love he had for the fans. And she took note at how the fans loved him too; especially the older ones.

As the announcement came over the PA, the boys said their goodbyes to the crowd and they all boarded the plane as one big happy family; or at least it appeared that way.

It sure didn’t feel that way though.

Brian broke the silence first by asking Kevin and Leighanne to trade seats for a while. Kevin hesitated for a minute, unsure whether or not he wanted to be subjected to more questioning, which was sure to come.

“What’s up?” Kevin asked while taking a seat next to Brian.

“I don’t know…why don’t you tell me.”

“I’sall good Brian.”

“You sure about that?”

Kevin looked over at Emma who was listening to Leighanne ramble on about something. He was ashamed of the way he acted earlier that day with her; he went too far. Turning his attention back to Brian, he answered him. “Yeah I’m sure.”

“Just one more thing then…why didn’t you tell us that she’s related to Lou? And don’t give me the crap that you fed AJ.”

“Brian, really…the only reason why I didn’t say anything was because I was worried you would treat her differently and I didn’t want that to happen…but it’s happening with you and Leighanne anyway.”

Brian looked confused, “How so?”

“Why didn’t you show up at Nick’s room last night? Any other night, you guys would’ve been there.”

Brian dropped his head, Kevin was right and he didn’t know what to say. “I’m sorry Kevin. I’ll talk to Leighanne about it. It’s just hard for her, you know how close she was to Kristin.”

“I know Brian…but I’d appreciate it if you guys would stop avoiding us…Emma’s bound to notice sooner or later.”

Brian nodded. “I want you to know something though…we know something’s going on here that isn’t quite right and if AJ’s assumption is right, well…I just wish you would trust us enough to help you.”

Kevin sat there staring out the window. He didn’t know how to respond to Brian’s last statement so he thought it’d be best just to stay silent.

He started to get up and Brian grabbed his arm, “Okay Kev, you know we’re all here for you when you’re ready.”

Kevin nodded and walked back to his seat. Leighanne was in the middle of telling Emma something when Kevin tapped her on the shoulder and pointed to her seat.

Noticing the look in his eyes, Leighanne didn’t want to push it. “I’ll tell you the rest later Emma…we’ll be seeing each other over the holidays, I’m sure.”

Once Leighanne got up, Kevin sat down and closed his eyes. Emma glanced over at him and noticed the distressed look on his face. “You guys already done?” He nodded. “Wanna talk about it?”

“The usual stuff, he wants to know what’s going on and how they can help.”

“What’d you say?” Emma asked anxiously.

“The usual…back off.”

“Oh.” Emma didn’t push the issue; she could tell Kevin just wanted to be left alone. Staring out the window of the plane she started replaying the days earlier scenes in her mind. When Kevin was ‘teaching her a lesson’ she had become overcome with desire. Desire that she didn’t even know existed. She glanced over at Kevin and was startled to see him staring back at her.

“I’m sorry about earlier.”

God…was he reading her mind now too? “I know.” Emma replied.

“I don’t know what came over me…God, the next time I do that shit to you…just slap me upside the head, would ya?”

“You sure about that…cause I will.”

Kevin chuckled and stood up to get his carry-on bag. Reaching in, he pulled out the portable CD player and handed it to Emma. “Thought you might of missed this.”

“Thanks…I didn’t bring my CD with me though.”

“Well, it just so happens that I have connections you know…and well, I happen to have a BSB CD right here in my bag if you want it.”

“Black and Blue?”

"Is there any other one?"

Kevin handed it to her and she put it in the player. Placing the headphones on, she silently started to sing Shape of My Heart to herself. Kevin glanced over at her and smiled… “Hey, did you learn all the songs while I was gone?”

Removing her headphones, she replied, “What?”

“You didn’t actually learn all those songs already did you?”

“Sure did, remember…you said I get to pick my reward?”

“Well, first you gotta sing each and every song to me…I don’t know you well enough to go on your word you know.”

“Fine…after the first couple, you’ll be begging me to stop! I’m not quite as talented as you are in that department.”

“We’ll see about that…carry on.”

Emma put her headphones back on and backtracked to The Call.

You’re gonna be sorry for suggesting this…

After the fourth track, he tapped her on the shoulder and told her that she could pick her reward, whatever she wanted…just as long as she didn’t sing anymore.

Giggling, she nodded her head and went back to listening.

Chapter 32

Emma was nervous. For the past thirty minutes, she had been touching up her makeup and fixing her hair in the visor mirror.

“Em, you look fine.”

“My hair is a mess, I just can’t get it to do what I want.”

“Bad hair day huh?” Kevin joked.

“Well, what do you think…look at it!” She swung her head around and glared at Kevin, waiting for his reply.

“Uh…it looks fine, look at mine.”

“I have and you’re definitely having a bad hair day too.”

“Gee…thanks a lot!” Kevin smiled and continued, “Really Emma, just relax, it’s only my family.”

“Only your family? I’ve only met your mother. I haven’t met anyone else yet and I’m sorry but I’m nervous, okay?” Emma continued on, not letting Kevin speak. “You know…this isn’t the normal realm of things here. Usually people date and get to know each other first…we didn’t do that. Then, they meet the families…we didn’t do that. Then, they get engaged…we didn’t do that. Then, they get married…we DID do that but without any of the other things that should’ve come first.”

“So, what’s your point?”

“My point is that I’m nervous, OKAY?” she yelled.

“Okay…okay…calm down. I realize that this is somewhat of an awkward situation for you…”

“Somewhat?”

Kevin ignored her interruption and continued on, “But you gotta chill Emma…or else their gonna know something’s up.”

“You’re right,” she sighed while placing her hands in her lap. “I’m chilled now.”

Kevin laughed at her last remark while pulling into his mothers’ driveway. “Well, looks like we’re the first ones here.” He looked over at Emma and rolled his eyes, “Relax and breathe...and above all, act natural.”

Kevin got out of the car and walked over to her side. Opening her door, he offered his hand and helped her out. “Remember…relax and breathe.” He grabbed the bags from the trunk when he noticed his mother running out of the front door, “Hi kids.”

“Hi mom.”

“Hi Mrs. Richardson.”

“Please Emma, call me Anne. How was your trip?” She hugged Emma tightly while whispering, “Relax dear, I’ve told the boys all about you, so they kinda know what to expect.”

“Thanks.” Emma whispered back.

“Hey, what about me?” Kevin put the bags down and waited for his mother to come to him. After giving her a big hug, he kissed her cheek. “I’m hoping there’s some food in there.”

“Of course dear, tons of it.”

“Where are the rest of the troops?”

“They’ll be here in the morning. Tonight, it’s just us…we can stay up and chat all night about your release tour. I do hope you brought pictures.”

“I got pictures but their not developed yet.” He started to walk towards the house, “Let’s unpack a little and then I’ll run out and get them done in an hour.”

“Sounds good, come on Emma…I’ll give you the tour.” Anne grabbed her daughter-in-laws arm and took her into the house.

**********

Settling into Kevin’s old room, she was finally beginning to relax. The walls were papered with burgundy and cream stripes and the only evidence of Kevin ever living in this room were the trophies displayed on the dresser. The room had been made over into a guest room now and Emma was somewhat disappointed. She was hoping to get a little glimpse into Kevin’s childhood while staying here, but wasn’t so sure she was going to get that chance now. Emma looked over the room carefully and noticed the bed immediately. The full-size bed looked rather small to her…she wondered how on earth they would both sleep in there without touching.

Walking over to the dresser, she picked up the trophies and studied them carefully. Football trophies…all of them. Placing them back down on the dresser, she noticed a shoebox on the floor in the corner. Opening the box, she realized she had come across a gold mine.

Inside the box were dozens upon dozens of photos all containing Kevin. They dated back to his baby years and even included some photos that looked like they were taken just recently. Glancing closer, she read the date…11/99.

Thanksgiving last year, she thought.

Kevin and Kristin. She recognized the girl right away as the same girl in the photo on Kevin’s dresser. Kevin looked so handsome standing there and for a fleeting moment, Emma felt her heart skip a beat.

She stared at the picture...really stared. Kristin was absolutely beautiful - there just wasn't any other word to describe her. Emma glanced down at her body and tried hard not to compare herself to Kristin, but it was hard not to. Her 5'7" 150 pound frame just didn't measure up to Kristin's.

Glancing at Kristin, she felt sick. She had single-handedly ruined their relationship and she felt terrible. Well, it wasn’t really her fault, but she played a hand in it too. She felt even sicker when she realized that she wasn’t so sure that she wanted to give Kevin up…

In her heart though, she knew this wouldn’t be forever. It was only for two years…and then Kevin would be free to do what he wanted.

Feeling someone’s presence in the room, she immediately turned around to see Anne standing there. She quickly put the picture back into the box and shut the lid.

“I’m sorry, I had no right to go through the box, please don’t tell Kevin.”

“Honey, what’re you sorry for? I’m the one that should be sorry, I completely forgot about leaving that box there when I was cleaning. I was actually just coming up to retrieve it.”

Emma handed her the box.

“Do you want me to leave it here with you? You’re welcome to go through it. There are a lot of old photos in there.” Anne offered.

“Would you mind?”

“Absolutely not. If you want, I can sit down with you for a little while and explain them to you…that is, if I can remember that far back.” Anne laughed.

“I would love that…thanks.” Emma pulled the picture out that she had been staring at earlier, “Can we start with this one?”

Anne nodded. “That’s Kristin.”

“I know. I’ve seen her picture at the house.”

Anne was appalled; “Kevin still has pictures of her there? Where are his manners…?”

“It wasn’t out,” she lied, “I happened to stumble across it.”

“Well, they shouldn’t be there period. He has a new life now and a new wife for that matter, he should be a little more sensitive. I thought I taught him better than that.” Anne winked.

“Can you tell me about her?”

“Sure, what do you want to know?”

Chapter 33

Kevin made his way to the local print shop downtown to turn his film in. He was told that it would take at least two hours to develop them all; he had twelve rolls.

He hadn’t been downtown in quite some time and decided to use this time to go window-shopping…something he used to love to do when he was a child. He quickly noticed that things really hadn’t changed much, considering it had been over six years or so. The roads were a little worse for wear, but the storefronts were all the same. Old school. Even the benches along the store windows were the same, only weathered.

Sitting down on a bench, he remembered back in time when his father would take him downtown for ice cream. The good ole’ days…

Glancing towards the old firehouse, Kevin saw the sign…LINGERIE BOUTIQUE.

Emma could really use some new bras…

Making his way over to the boutique, he tripped over a broken brick in the road and nearly fell flat on his butt. “God damn it!”

“Mama mama, that man over there just said a bad word!!”

Kevin turned his attention towards the little girl standing there just a few feet away. She had her mother by her coattail and was tugging at it trying to get her attention.

“Shhh sweetie, God heard him…let him worry about it now.”

“But mama, he said God damn it!”

“Emily, that’s enough. I said be quiet. Let God…” she trailed off. Looking over at Kevin, she instantly smiled. “Oh my! Your one of those Nsyncers, aren’t you?”

Yeah,’ Nsync that’s right…they have the potty mouth…not Backstreet.

Kevin smiled and held his hand out. Crouching down, he offered his hand to the little girl. “Sorry about the language little lady, I promise I’ll try not to do it again.”

“You’d better or the devil gonna come get you.”

Kevin froze. His eyes were as big saucers now listening to her remark. “Well, I don’t know about that exactly, but I’ll be more careful I promise.”

“The devil hears what you say you know.”

I know all about the devil darlin’…I made a deal with him years ago…

Kevin started to walk away, when the little girl ran up in front of him and stopped.

“I see dead people you know.”

Kevin’s mouth dropped…this little girl was starting to freak him out. He pinched himself, just to make sure.

Pointing her fingers at Kevin, the little girl added, “I can see you too!”

“Emily Willamina you get over here this instant!” The mother looked at Kevin with horror in her eyes, “I’m sorry Justin…she’s been watching a little too much TV lately.”

With that said, she grabbed the little girl and walked away.

Kevin watched them walk down the street, silently whispering to himself… “Justin? How could she confuse me with him? I look more like Joey than Justin.” Shaking his head, he entered the boutique.

**********

“Thank you Anne for sharing all that information with me.”

“My pleasure dear…it was fun reminiscing about the good ole’ days. I just wish Jerald would’ve been around to witness Kevin and all his success.”

“Yeah, Kevin wishes that too.”

“And don’t you worry about Kristin. Kevin loves you, he told me. He wouldn’t have married you if he didn’t. I know Kevin…he’s a good man.”

Evidently you don’t know him that well, she thought.

“Thanks.”

“Like I told you earlier, in my heart, I never really thought Kristin was the one for Kevin. I think Kevin knew it too.” She shook her head, “Oh…he won’t admit it, but deep down he knew. If he really thought she was the one, he would’ve married her years ago. They were together a long time honey and in those years, if he would’ve thought for one iota of a second that she was the one…he would’ve made it official.”

“I hope you’re right.”

“A mom knows these things dear…you’ll see. Once you have children, you’ll know what I’m talking about.”

I gotta have sex to have children…

“And don’t you worry about the rest of my boys. I’ve told them about you and threatened them with their life if they even so much as make you a little uncomfortable.” Anne giggled. “Okay, well I didn’t actually threaten them with their life…but I did tell them they won’t get any dinner…with them, that threat is as good as any.”

“Thanks.”

“You’re gonna be okay Emma. Kevin’s the one who will probably get razzed about the whole thing.”

Emma eyes widened, “I hope not.”

“Their brothers dear…there gonna give him hell, trust me. Going off and getting married without telling them was not a good move on Kevin’s part.” Anne sighed, “Especially since Kevin has always told Tim that he wanted him to be the one to marry him.”

“Tim can do that?”

“Tim’s a minister dear…you didn’t know that?”

Emma was confused. She wasn’t sure if she knew that or not. “Maybe you told me that when you came to the house, but I don’t think Kevin’s ever mentioned it.”

“Shame on him!” Anne got up to leave, “Now why don’t you lie down for a while, I’ll have Kevin wake you up when he gets back.”

“Thanks Anne…for everything.”

“Your welcome.”

Emma retreated back on the bed and brought her head to the pillow. Immediately, she started rehashing their conversation.

Was she right?
Was Kristin really not ‘the one’?
Or was Kevin aware of Uncle Lou’s plan years ago and that’s why he didn’t marry her?
What was going on?

Emma wanted to know what was going on, she really did. But…at the same time, she didn’t. She was completely and utterly confused and evidently, so was Kevin.
