CHAPTER 1
He heard the softly accented voice as he neared her office and waited for the end of the phone conversation. He stepped into the doorway as she turned up the radio. She looked out over the city of Nashville with her back to him. It gave him an opportunity to study her.
Unbeknownst to her he had been present at the last conference call she had with his manager and an executive from Jive Records. They were going over all the details of the Backstreet Boys rehearsal time at the arena. He had dropped by his manager's office to sign off on some last minute changes on the layout of the tour book. He knew she took business seriously by her demeanor on the phone. Her clothes reflected it. She was dressed in a black, fitted suit. The skirt stopped just above the knee. The desk prevented further inspection of her legs. Her blonde hair hung down the middle of her back.
He felt sneaky watching her unaware, but couldn't help himself. She was moving to the music. Suddenly she rotated her body around and he was caught. They both jumped. He saw the instant recognition in her eyes. She fumbled for the volume control of her radio. When she looked back at him, her face was bright red. A smile was playing at his lips.
"I'm so sorry Mr. Richardson. How long have you been there," she said in a rush of words.
"Not long and call me Kevin," he returned.
"OK Kevin. I'm Jordan Buchanan as I'm sure you know," she said as she extended her hand over the desk.
Stepping up to take her hand, he said, "Nice to meet you Jordan."
"Thanks. Again I'm sorry. I don't normally dance around in my office."
"It's quite alright."
"Weren't expecting you until tomorrow."
"I came up with Brian. He is meeting with our attorney today."
"I see. Well what can I do for you?"
"Actually, I'm just killing some time and thought I might take a look around."
"Of course! Let me forward my phone to our receptionist and I will take you around."
"I don't want to pull you away from your work."
"You're not."
He watched her talk to the receptionist. Her face was no longer red. He was amused at the way she would glance at him then quickly look away when their eyes met. Her eyes were a deep green. He guessed she was close to his age. Hanging up the phone she picked up a pencil as she walked around her desk. Standing Kevin followed her out into the hallway. She absentmindedly pull her hair back and used the pencil to secure her hair in a bun. Kevin watched.
Jordan caught him and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing I've just never seen someone put their hair up like that before."
"Oh. A friend taught me the trick years ago. Don't ever have to worry about hair accessories," she said with a smile.
They had just started down the hall when Jordan's boss rounded the corner.
"Oh good I caught you. Kevin, I'm David Russell, general manager of this place."
"Hello David."
"I see you are sneaking in on us."
"Actually, Brian had some business in town and I came up with him."
"Great! Now let me show you around this place," directed David.
Jordan and Kevin exchanged smiles, before Kevin disappeared around the corner with David. Jordan let out a breath she had been holding since she turned to see him in her doorway. Back in her office she called her friend in the box office.
"Delaney, may I help you?"
"Can you shoot me now?"
"Sure. You coming to me or am I coming to you?"
"Don't care."
"So what happened?"
"Del I was dancing around my office like a loon when who walks in."
"David?"
"No Kevin ‘Don't hate me because I'm gorgeous’ Richardson."
"You’re kidding," exclaimed Delaney.
"No! And you can stop laughing now."
"Dan it's ok. You now only have to face him everyday for the next month."
"You are not helping!"
"Jordan it's fine. Did he get mad?"
"No he was just smirking at me."
"That's a good sign.”
Jordan changed the subject. “Shelly called today.”
“How is motherhood treating her?”
“Very well. Just between you, me and the desk…I don’t think she’s coming back.”
“Why?”
“Mark got a promotion. She said with the money he’s bringing in she doesn’t have to work.”
“I’ll miss her, but all the better for you.”
“From your mouth to David’s brain.”
“Who else would he give it to? Anyway, is Kevin Richardson really that hot?"
"No pictures do him justice."
"Man!"
“I know and I humiliated myself.”
“Suck it up.”
“Big help you are.”
“I know. Gotta go.”
"Later."
CHAPTER 2
A week passed and rehearsals were running smoothly. Jordan managed not to embarrass herself anymore. She remained strictly professional. Purposely staying away from the Boys, making it a point to deal with ‘their people’. Her boss, David cautioned her about appropriate behavior. He did not want to hear their manager and others complain about his staff flirting with the Boys. He was not having a repeat of the last time the group rehearsed in the venue.
They were all nice guys. It always caught Jordan off guard when she saw Kevin watching her. She hated always blushing, even more so, because Kevin would always get this little smirk.
On this particular Saturday morning, she came in to workout with Delaney before the box office opened. One of the fringe benefits of working at the Gaylord Entertainment Center was the free use of the Hockey and Arena Football teams’ workout rooms.
“Have you watched any of the rehearsals,” asked Delaney as they neared the dressing rooms and rehearsal hall after their workout.
“Nope.”
“Come on. Let’s sneak a peak at the stage.”
“Delaney.”
“Jordan.”
“Ladies.”
“God Mike! Scare us half to death,” exclaimed Delaney, smacking the hockey team’s trainer on the arm.
“If you hadn’t been snoopin’ I wouldn’t have scared you.”
“We’re not snoopin,” said a defiant Delaney.
Jordan interceded, “Mike what brings you in so early on a non-game day?”
“Have to check in supplies.”
“Fun,” commiserated Jordan.
“Yeah well we can’t all be Backstreet Boys and you two were snoopin’ around.”
“Mike go before I hurt you,” demanded Delaney.
“You know you love me.”
“In your dreams.”
“Bye Mike,” called Jordan as she pulled Delaney way.
They stuck their heads inside the arena and looked at the stage or rather stages. The main stage was in front of them and a bridge went out to a smaller stage.
“Hey look who it is,” commented AJ from his seat beside Kevin.
Kevin turned to see Jordan and another girl.
AJ continued, “You think Jordan plays for the other team?”
“What?”
“Come on man, she doesn’t look at any of us.”
“Your ego amazes me sometimes Bone.”
“Me too, but it would explain her non-interest.”
“Whatever AJ.”
“Now her friend on the other hand looks very interested in all that is Backstreet. Think I’ll go say hello.”
Before Kevin could say anything AJ dropped down off the stage. Unfortunately, he hadn’t noticed the cord stretched out on the floor beneath him. It shifted as his foot landed, sending him the ground.
“Shit!”
“AJ what did you do?”
“What does it look like I did Kev? I twisted my damn ankle and fell on my ass!”
“You don’t have to get snippy.”
“ Can you walk,” asked Brian, coming over to checkout the situation.
“Damn it hurts. Smacked the hell out of my knee too!”
“AJ you aren’t suppose to do this stuff. You’re not in Toronto,” said Jordan walking over to him.
“Hey Jordan,” greeted Brian. “He can’t be limited to Canada for his graceful moves.
“What happened,” exclaimed Skip, as he came running up.
“Don’t freak Skip. I just took a dive. I’m fine.”
“Don’t move! We need to get you to the hospital!”
“I ain’t goin’ to no damn hospital,” exploded AJ.
“AJ,” started Skip.
Jordan interrupted, “Skip why don’t we let Mike McDonald take a look at it first?”
“Who’s that?”
“The trainer for the Predators,” answered Delaney finding her voice.
“The what?”
“Our hockey team. Marcus right,” Jordan asked the bodyguard.
“Yeah.”
“Marcus can you pick him up and follow me?”
“No one has to carry me,” said AJ.
“You are not in on the discussion,” replied Skip.
“Hey,” yelled AJ.
Jordan cut him off. “Hospital or Training room, either way Marcus carries you. Now which will it be?”
“No damn hospital!”
“Then be quiet and let Marcus carry you.”
They all followed Jordan to the Training room. AJ grumbled the whole way. Mike looked at his ankle and knee. He assessed it as just a mild sprang and his knee only bruised. Mike ordered AJ to stay off of it for the day. He started to protest, but everyone shot him down.
After the crisis was handled, Kevin looked at Jordan. She was talking with Mike and Skip. Her hair was up in a ponytail. She was wearing a sweatshirt and shorts. She didn’t have any makeup on. She looked just as pretty. He liked her legs. She wasn’t tall, but her legs were very nice.
“Are rehearsals done,” asked a hopeful Nick.
“No,” replied Skip.
Jordan was not successful at suppressing a smile when looking at Nick. He frowned. She glanced around quickly. Certain the coast was clear, she stuck her tongue out at him. First he looked shocked, but it quickly turned into a huge grin. He too knew how reserved Jordan was around them. . He felt like he had been let in on a secret.
“Do y’all need anything else,” she asked, turning her attention back to Skip.
“No I think we’ll be fine as soon as I tie Fred Astair here to a chair. Thanks for your help Jordan.”
“No problem Skip. Thanks Mike.”
“Anytime Dani.”
“Say goodbye to the nice people Delaney,” instructed Jordan, linking arms with her friend and pulling her toward the door.
“Goodbye nice people,” called Delaney as she was pulled through the door.
Kevin stuck his head out the door to watch the two friends skip down the hallway singing “We’re off to see the Wizard”. He was determined to learn more about Jordan Buchanan. He knew one thing. She was definitely not gay.
