The first train steamed into town in May 1882, giving birth to the city of
Killeen. The railroad positioned Killeen as the central shipping point for the surrounding
agricultural area. Throughout the late 1800s up to 1942, Killeen remained a small but
bustling rural community of less than 2,000 residents. In 1950, Killeen's future was
secured when Congress designated Camp Hood as Fort Hood, a permanent installation.
Harker Heights got its start as a pig farm supplying pork to Camp Hood.
From these humble beginnings, the city has grown from a population of 1,000 in 1960 to its
present population of 15,000.
Copperas Cove has a rich history, beginning with settlement in the 1840's,
soon after Texas declared its independence. In the late 1800's, people came to Cove for
the prime cattle grazing land and the use of the Santa Fe Railroad. The natural basin
formed by the five surrounding hills provided a gathering place for their cattle. In the
early 1900's, people settled here for commerce and farming. Today, Copperas Cove is part
of the large military and business activity in the area. Its citizens are excited about
its bright future and proud of the community's dedication to a better tomorrow.
