“Mom I have been thinking and I wanted to sit and talk with you. I want to be a baby.”  Sarah got a funny look on her face, “Ok, why is that Brian?”  Brian shrugged his shoulders’  “I don’t know mom I just do.”  “Ok, Brian you are ten years old and you want to be a baby is that right?”  Brian thought about how to answer that question. After a short silence, “Yes mom that is right.” Sarah could see in Brian’s face that he was serious about this,  “Ok Brian, why do you want to do this?” Brian was silent. “Brian it’s ok I am curious on why you want to be a baby.” Brian took a deep breath, “I don’t know mom I just do.” Sarah thought about this for a few moments before she continued.  “Ok, Brian tell me this what do you want to do?”  “I just want to be a baby.” “Ok, but tell me what you want to do.”  Brian thought for a few minutes, “ I don’t know I just want to be a baby.”

Sarah could see the desperation on his face and she knew he really wanted this: What brought this on and why does he want this so bad? He is ten and he wants to be two again. It would be nice to have my baby back but how would it affect him after it is done? Let me see if I can find out why. And if he wants it this bad then we are going to try and get to the bottom of this.  I want to try and give him what he wants but also in that same aspect I want him to learn responiblitiy.  This is going to be a tough problem.

“Ok, Brian one last time why do you want to be a baby and what do you want to do?”  “ I don’t know mom all I know is I want to be a baby.”  Sarah thought about this for a few moments,  “Ok, Brian you want to be a baby right?” Brian nodded,  “Yes I do mom.” Sarah could not believe how Brian stood his ground: He really wants this.  Well if he wants it this bad I will work with him.  But I am not totally sure on how to handle this.

“Ok Brian let’s go to the store.” Brian got a shocked look on his face. “Why are we going to the store?” Sarah smiled, “Well a baby needs diapers and other baby stuff right?” Brian’s jaw dropped, “Mom are you serious?”  Sarah kept smiling, “ Yes I am serious. Since you want this that bad we are going to do it. I am going to take you to the store and we are going to get the things for you to be a baby.  Brian I want you to know that I am not sure why you want to do this but if you want it this bad then I guess we can work with this.”

Brian showed a little smile. He was excited and also nervous at the same time. He had wanted this for awhile and he finally worked himself up to tell his mom about it.

Sarah pulled into a parking space and cut the vehicle off.  “Now Brian when we get into the store you will go to the bathroom understand?”  “  Yes mom but why?”  “Well you want to be a baby right?”  “Yes”  “well I am going to go ahead and put a diaper on you when we get into the store.”  Brian started to get upset,  “but mom why here at the store?”  “Well you want to be a baby we can get you back in diapers right now right?” “Yes but…”  “Well if you don’t want to do this we can go home”  “No, mom I want to do this”  “Ok then what are you going to do when we get into the store?”  “I am going to go into the bathroom so you can put a diaper on me.”  “Ok honey are you ready and are you sure you want to do this?”  “Yes, mom I want to do this”  “Ok, Brain one last time are you sure that you want to do this.”  Brian look at his mom and with a stern voice and a excited look he said, “Yes, mom lets do it!”

As they entered the store they headed directly to the women’s bathroom as was planned. When they made it inside there was no one in the bathroom. They were the only two in the room. Sarah deposited three quarters into the vending machine and turned the knob. The machine spit out the diaper-changing packet. Sarah took the diaper and sat it on the folding changing table. She then told Brian, “Ok lets get those shorts and underwear off so that we can put this diaper on you.” Brian was nervous and did not know what to do. Sarah knelt down and looked at him, “Brian are you sure you want to do this?” Brian nodded. “Ok then let’s get these shorts off.” Sarah helped Brian in taking his shorts and underwear off. As soon as that was done she placed him on the changing table.

As soon as Brian was on the changing table he started to relax but when Sarah had the diaper out of the package and was opening it Brian tensed again. “Ok honey lift up for me.”  Brian did as he was asked. As Sarah centered the diaper and started to pull it between his legs Sarah saw that Brian was really uneasy. “Brian are you ok with me putting this diaper on you?” Brian did not say a word he just nodded.  “Brian what’s wrong?”  “ Nothing mom just a little nervous.”  “ Brian we don’t have to do this.”  “Mom I want too can you please finish putting that diaper on me?” “Yes I can honey you are not relaxing and it is making this kind of hard.” When Brian heard that he relaxed a little. Sarah pulled the diaper up tight and taped it into place.

Sarah helped Brian off the changing table. “ There you go honey how’s that?” Brian moved around as he did you could hear the diaper crinkling. “ I like it mom but it’s a little tight and it feels funny.” Sarah had Brian hold up his shirt while she did a physical inspection.  “Well honey you will need an extra large diaper but that one fits you. Now lets get your shorts back on you so we can go do some shopping.”

Sarah and Brian made their way over to the infant department. As they walked through the store Sarah could hear Brian’s diaper under his shorts and she took note he was waddling slightly. She knelt down and whispered, “you doing ok with this Brian?”  “Yes mom it is neat.” Sarah didn’t even have to ask she could tell his spirit was back on top.

When they reached the infant section Sarah looked down at Brian.  “Ok this is for you, so lets pick out some stuff for you.” Brian’s eyes light up.  “Really mom?” I can get anything I want?”  Yes honey, but it has to be baby items and remember we are getting everything a baby would need ok.”  “Ok mom!”

Brian bounced all over the baby section and was grabbing bottles, pacifiers, sipper cups, he even grabbed a teething ring. “Um Brian come here honey I need your help.” As Brian got over to his mom his heart sank.  “Mom are you going to make me pick my diapers?”  “Yes I am Brian.”  “Au mom.”  “Come on Brian all you have to do is chose a brand.”  “Ok, mom I like pampers they smell good.” As Sarah reached for the diapers she said,  “Ok pampers it is. These size 6 should fit ya.”

As the morning shopping spree finished up Sarah took Brian and his new baby stuff to the front so they could check out.

When they got back to the car Sarah went digging in the bags and pulled out the pacifier and also two diapers. “ Mom why did you get two diapers out?”  “Well I am going to have to change you some time today right?”  “Yea I forgot about that. Are we going home now?”  “Nope we have a couple more stops to make.”  “Where are we going?”  “Well you need some baby clothes, cloth diapers, plastic pants, and diaper pins right?” Brian nodded.  “Ok, and what about a high chair, playpen, baby bed, and toys?” Brian nodded again.  “Well then we are going to stop at the ABC baby store and also your aunts house.

Brian got quiet. He could handle the baby store but his aunt’s house. What would they say? His aunt would understand but what about his twin cousins? They would make fun of him and tease him.

Brian looked at his mom,  “Mom Aunt Melanie will understand but what about Melissa and Megan?”  “Brian I will take care of the twins ok,” “Ok mom.”

Sarah pulled into the parking lot of the baby store and found a parking spot.  “Ok Brian, before we go in do you need to be changed?”  “No mom I am still dry.”  “Ok when we get in here we are getting you some clothes. Are you ready for this?”  “Yes mom.”  “Ok lets go.”

As Sarah and Brian went into the store Brian was amazed. Everywhere he looked was baby stuff. Sarah and Brian were only in the store for a few moments when a sales clerk came over to them.  “Hello my name is Kelly how can I help you?” Sarah looked at Kelly.  “Hello we are here on a little shopping adventure.”  “Ok ma’am what can I help you with?” Sarah looked down at Brian,  “Well my lil one here is in need of some clothes, diapers, and plastic pants. I thought you might be able to help us.”  “Yes ma’am that is no problem.” Sarah was relieved but a little confused.  “Ok so you have clothes that are big enough to fit him?”  “Yes ma’am we might have to try on a few different sizes and styles but yes we do.”  “Um ok.” Kelly could see Sarah was a little uneasy about this.

“Ma’am can I ask you a question?”  “Sure.”  “Is this the first time you got baby clothes that are for your son?” “Brian yes, it is the first time.” Kelly smiled,  “ma’am to be honest with you it is not uncommon for people to ask for items that are Brian’s age.” Sarah got a funny look on her face, ”really?”  “Yes ma’am” Sarah let out a sigh of relief as Kelly continued.  “As a matter of fact there is one customer that comes in quite often for just plastic pants because her children are really hard on them and they rip them all the time.” Sarah and Kelly continued talking while Kelly showed Sarah and Brain over to the older kid’s section of the store.

Kelly was showing Sarah some of the styles they had to offer when Sarah asked, “Kelly can you tell me what makes a child want to do this? Or even why a parent would want to keep their child a baby?”  Kelly thought about this for a few moments, “ Well tell me this why did you bring Brian in this morning?” Without even thinking about it Sarah blurted out, “ because this morning he told me he wanted to be a baby.” Kelly just looked at Sarah and did not say a word. Sarah thought about what she had just said, “ I see what you are saying. I asked him and he said he did not know and as for me I was not exactly sure and felt it might be a phase that he would grow out of.” Kelly smiled, “Ma’am I can’t answer your question because I really don’t know the answer. The only thing I know is I see it all the time. From my view point it is not uncommon to see a ten year old in here with his or her parents getting things for their child.”

Sarah just looked at Kelly, “Oh by the way my name is Sarah. I apologize for all the questions it’s just I am new to this and I am not sure how to go about this.” Kelly smiled  “ Sarah to be honest with you and in my own views support the child, (Brian in this case ) and let them express them self.  I personally feel that it does not hurt but also it might be a phase that he will grow out of.  The only thing that would trouble me is that if the other children found out how they would make fun of Brian.”
Sarah looked around, “speaking of Brian where is he?” Kelly pointed over to the kids play area “he is over in our kids play area playing.”  “Kelly can I ask you a question?” “Sure” “How did you come about working here and learning about children?” “Well I am going to school and I am working on my masters degree in child development. As far as working here, it allows me to work with parents and also their children.” Sarah was in total awe, “so you do not see a problem with this?” Kelly sorted her thoughts, “ Sarah can I answer your question with a question?” “Sure” “Ok, honestly I would say Brian is a good kid he is a normal ten year old. He is highly smart and advanced for his age. Is that right?” Sarah was amazed, “Yes you are right but how did you know that?” Kelly smiled, “ I have been watching him and the way he acts. I have been taught to watch children and note how they react. The way he has been acting since you came in is showing.” Sarah was still in awe, “Ok, then can you tell me why he wants to be a baby?”  “That one I am not sure about. But if I can talk to him and work with him I am sure I can find out. But that is your choice as his mother.”

Sarah started to relax: Kelly seems like a good kid and she also seems to know what she is talking about but she is holding something back. She has been very interested in Brian but why?

Sarah gave Kelly a serious look,  “ Kelly I don’t know how to ask this but I am curious. I have noticed you have taken an interest in Brian.” Kelly took the question in stride. She could tell Sarah was edgy and also nervous.  “Ok let me try and explain I am working on a term paper and I am using the topic of, why do children regress as they advance?”  “Ok in other words your question why do children, like Brian want to be babies.” Sarah allowed herself to relax.  “Ok I understand now.”  “I’m sorry Sarah I did not mean to offend you.”  “It’s ok but when it comes to Brian I am very protective. We lost his father last year and I am worried I will lose him also.”

Kelly frowned. “ I’m sorry to hear that. It must have been hard for you two.”  “Yes it was and sometimes still is.” Kelly changed the topic of conversation really quick because she could see how it was affecting Sarah.

“Tell you what Sarah let’s see what we can do to get Brian some clothes. You said you wanted a few set’s right?”  Sarah was jarred back to the present and away from the thoughts of her husband. “Um yes, the whole set ups.” Kelly looked at Sarah, “Ok, I can tell Brian is wearing a diaper right now, do you want to have cloth or disposable on when he is trying on his new clothes?” Sarah thought about this for a few moments, “Well the cloth are thicker if memory serves.” Kelly nodded, “Yes they are.” “Ok I just have disposibles with me and I am going to have to get cloths any ways.” Kelly looked at her, “ Tell you what I will give you a cloth diaper set on me.” Sarah looked at Kelly, “you don’t have to do that.” Kelly smiled, “I would rather do that so that you know that you and Brian are satisfied and most importantly like them instead of you buying them and not liking them.” Sarah thought about it a few minutes, “Ya you are right but you don’t have to do that.” Kelly just smiled, “Ok I tell you what I want to.” Sarah gave in, “Ok, I’ll take it.” “Ok Sarah did you want to go ahead and get Brian and I can get a set of clothes for you?” As Sarah went over to get Brian she looked back, “ Can you get those diapers also?” Kelly responded, “Sure.”

Kelly got the requested items together as Sarah was retrieving Brian. When they were back to where Kelly was Kelly handed Sarah cloth diapers, a set of diaper pins, and a pair of plastic pants, “ Kelly plastic pants?”  “Yes they are an added bonus.” Sarah started to protest, “ Kelly you have done to much.”  “It’s ok Sarah I will take care of it. Besides I am sure Brian would rather be playing than picking out clothes.” Brian popped up, “Yes I would.” The two girls started laughing. Kelly looked down at Brian, “ Brian I tell you what if it’s ok with your mom let’s get you to try on a few outfits and then you can go back and play again.” Sarah smiled,” I’m sure we can do that.” Brian was all smiles when he heard that. Sarah asked Kelly “ Where can I change Brian?” Kelly directed Sarah to the dressing rooms. “In the dressing rooms are changing tables.” “Ok oh one more thing, by chance can you pick out a few more outfits for him? I like these two jumpers you picked out.” Kelly smiled, “Sure no problem any thing in particular?” Sarah thought for a moment, “ Onsie if you have em.” “Sure thing I will bring them to you in a few minutes if you would like.” “That would be great.”

Sarah directed Brian to the dressing room with the set of clothes and diapers. When they got into the dressing room Sarah was amazed when she saw the size of the dressing table: Where in the world did they find a changing table this big? It is huge. It is exactly the same thing I had when Brian was a baby just upsized. I am going to have to talk to Kelly about this. If Brian keeps this up for awhile I might get one for him.

“Ok Brian come here so I can change you.” Brian was very sheepish. “ What’s wrong Brian?” Brian was quiet and did not say a word. Sarah reached down, picked Brian up, and set him on the changing table. “ What’s wrong honey?” Still no response. “Brian it’s okay you can tell me.” Brian took a deep breath “ Mom I am wet.” Sarah looked at Brian; “Honey is that what is bothering you?” He nodded. “Brian it’s okay.  You are wearing a diaper right!” No response, “Ok Brian stand up honey.” When Brian was standing Sarah took his shirt off, “Brian what is that?” He looked down, “ A diaper” “Ok and you are wearing it right?” “Yes” Sarah smiled at Brian to try to get him to relax, “Ok so you are wearing a diaper and it is wet right?” Brian nodded. “ So why are you upset?” “Because I thought you would be mad.” Sarah took Brian into her arms, “Brian I am not mad. There is nothing to be mad about. You are wearing a diaper and I know if you have to go you are going to go in your diaper right?” Brian shrugged his shoulders; “ I guess so.” “ Tell you what Brian let me put you back on the changing table so I can change you ok?” “Ok mom.”

As Sarah laid Brian back on the changing table she said, “ Ok let me see if I can remember how to do this.” Brian gave his mom a serious look, “MOM!” Sarah started to laugh, “Ok Brian I remember.” She took the tapes loose and pulled the dirty diaper from under Brian, and proceeded to clean him. She then reached for the cloth diapers, when she unfolded them she found a surprise: um these are different. I have never seen a cloth diaper like this. This diaper is just like a disposable.

All of a sudden there was a knock on the door “How are things going Sarah? I have the onsie for you.” “Just a second Kelly I’m putting Brian’s diaper on.”  When Sarah finished diapering Brian she put his plastic pants over his two cloth diapers.

She gave him a visual inspection and then put a pair of Osh Kosh overall shorts on him. “ Kelly the onsie is a good idea. It has the snap crotch so it will not pull out of the clothes he is wearing.” “And another thing Sarah he can run around in just a onsie if you want him to.” “Yea you are right.”

Sarah looked at Brian; “ Well how do you like it?” Brian looked at his mom, “ I like it, can I go now?” Both ladies let out a laugh. “ Well Kelly I guess we will take it.” Kelly looked at Brian; “ You like your new outfit?”  “Yes I really do can I go play now?” Sarah looked at Brian, “Yes honey you can go play. Kelly can you keep an eye on him so I can go get a disposable to put back on him?” Kelly smiled, “ Sure no problem.” Brian gave her a stern look,” “mom I don’t want you to.” Kelly giggled, “ Well I guess that means he likes his new diapers and he doesn’t want to take them off.” Sarah looked at Kelly in agreement; “ Yes I guess you are right.”

Brian broke and ran toward the kids play area. Sarah laughed as Brian waddled across the store. She looked at Kelly; “He is so cute now I think I know why parents do this.” Kelly smiled “ I agree.”

Brian was content in the kid’s area playing while his mom was picking out some outfits for him. “ “ Kelly where did the store get that changing table in the dressing room?” Kelly told Sarah, “ There is a company in North Carolina that makes baby furniture. They make those as well but it is a special order.” “Ok I see. I was thinking if Brian keeps this up and it’s not a whim I might get him one.” “ Well if you want one we can order it for you all. All you have to do is go through our catalog and show me what you want and I can order it.” “ Ok from the looks of it we might need to do it.” “ Just let me know and we can get it for you.” “ I’ll be back in a second let me go check on Brian.”

Sarah found Brian playing with a Fisher Price activity center, “ Brian can I ask you a question?” Brian sat the toy down and looked at his mom, “yes mom” “Brian I was thinking about asking Kelly to come over for dinner tonight. Would you like that?” Brian could not contain his excitement, “Yea mom I like her she is nice.” “Ok honey let me talk to her and see what she says ok?” “Ok mom.” Brian we are going to be leaving in a little bit but you can play until then okay.” “Ok mom.” As Sarah made her way back to the counter her mind was wandering: Kelly works well with Brian and he likes her. I would like for her to work with him if she would and find out why this baby phrase came into play. Not to mention it would be nice to have someone my own age to talk to. It would be great for all three of us. Kelly can get research for her degree, Brian can have a big sister and I can have a friend.

When Sarah made it back to the counter she found Kelly had all her selections ready for her, “Well Sarah will there be anything else?” “ Not that I can think of.” “ Oh hold on does Brian have bottles?” “ Yes as a matter of fact I just got him some why do you ask?” “ I have something he might like. Let me get it for him.”

When Kelly came back she had a bottle with an oversized nipple on it, two packages of the same size nipples and a pacifier with the same oversized nipple. “Give these a try he might like these better than the standard infant ones.” “ Ok I did not know they made this size.” Kelly smiled, “ Sarah this might sound odd but I can order anything that has an infant theme. If you want baby clothes we can get them in your size as well.” “ Really?” “ Yes as a matter of fact I ordered myself a complete baby outfit that I wear to customer parties.” “ Wow that is odd but it is an original idea.” “ You would be surprised.” “Kelly this might sound off the wall but what are you doing tonight?” “ Nothing why do you ask?” “Well I was thinking you are working on your term paper, you work well with Brian, and I would like to find out what brought this baby phase on.” Kelly was caught off guard and she didn’t know what to say. “Um, Sarah I am lost for words.” “I asked Brian and he said he would love it if you could come over tonight. I apologize Kelly I am a little lost Brian told me this morning he wanted me to baby him. And then we come in here and I see how you work with him. It would help out.” Kelly thought about this for a few minutes, “Ok I tell you what I will be getting off about 6:00 what about being over at your house about 7:00?” “That will work. Would I be to forward in asking you to bring your baby outfit with you so I could see it?” “ No not at all that way I can get what I need from my house.” “Ok then that will work. How much do I owe you?” Sarah paid for Brian’s stuff and thanked Kelly for her help. “Ok we will see you around 7:00 then.” “Yes ma’am 7:00.” “Ok let me get Brian and get out of here.”

Sarah and Brian were on their way over to Melanie’s house when Sarah called her on the cell phone. She told Melanie they were on their way to her house and told her that she needed to talk to her about Brian. Melanie was full of questions but Sarah told her she would explain when she got there. Sarah asked Melanie to keep the twins under control when she got there because of Brian and what was going on. Melanie agreed. Fifteen minutes later Sarah and Brian pulled into the driveway. They no sooner got into the driveway and Melanie met them at the car door. “ Ok Sarah what’s wrong with Brian?  Is he sick, or did something happen to him.” “Melanie he is fine as you can see.”  Melanie saw Brian in the front seat with Sarah, “You scared me there for a few minutes.  So what is it that you want to tell me.”  Sarah showed an off the wall look.  Tell ya what lets get into the house and I will tell you the whole story.”  Melanie agreed and all three went into the house.

 Melanie looked at Brian and then Sarah, “Sarah can I ask you a question?”  Sarah nodded.  “Why is my nephew wearing diapers?”  Sarah looked at Melanie that is what I wanted to talk to you about.  Where are the twins right now?  They are in their room playing. Why?  I am worried about them teasing Brian.”  Melanie showed a concern look.  I see what you are saying.  Tell ya what I will take care of them if they act up I have something in mind for those two they have been little terrors all day long.”
