3Obituary for Jerry Smith, Northwest Florida Daily News

"On June 1, 2013, the world lost a virtuous and an exemplary man, Jerry Ray Smith, born July 18, 1939, was a patriarch of the rarest quality. He was known by all that knew him for his selflessness and compassion that he felt for his friends and family. Nothing on this earth was more important to him than his family. Second only to that love was his willingness to do for others. He was a proud 27-year veteran of the Air Force along with over 30 years of volunteer service as a firefighter. He did for others because that is what truly made him happy. His favorite past time was spending weekend nights at the racetrack with his loved ones.He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Virginia Lee Smith; his three children, Dawn (Harvie), Gina and Jeff (Wendy). He also leaves behind a legacy that includes five grandchildren, Jesse (Logan), Mollie, Joshua Dawson (J.D.), Chancy and Lyndie; two great-granddaughters, Emmalyne and MiaLyn. He will be lovingly remembered by his surviving siblings, Virgil Lee, Linda Sue, Martha Ann and Ronnie; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also survived by a lifelong friend and mentor, his Uncle Delmer Owens. He was pre-deceased by his mother, Ovenea, and father, J.C. Smith. He worked hard his entire life to provide for his loved ones and his family knows that he is still watching over them from the big racetrack in the sky.A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 7, 2013, at 11 a.m., in the Heritage Gardens Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jim Murphy officiating."
