James Landon Black

According to grandson, A.B. Black, he was a hard taskmaster to his children. They would have to get up early in the morning eat breakfast and head for the fields after hitching up the horses to the [wagon]. Lan would have his breakfast then go into town to play dominoes all day, and visit with other men. He would not come home until after dark many times, and after working hard all day in the fields, the children had to milk the cows, and do the many other chores around the household and farm. Though their evening meal would be ready, they were not allowed to eat until Lan came home, and they had unhitched and fed his horses. It was usually late at night before they ate and went to bed. Then they got up the next morning to face the same tasks. Lan's son, Andy (Wm A.) , swore after years of that kind of life, that if he married he would always be home by dark, and he would be a good father to his children. And A.B. said his father, Andy (Wm. A) missed only a couple of evenings being home with his children.
